I think the idea was to show that before John was turned into a Spartan, injected with god knows what to enhance his body and shoved in a suit of armour, he was a perfectly normal human being. Then again if you do something really geeky and read the books first it's not a shock or anticlimactic when you hear his name in Halo 3

OT: Errrm, stupidest i can think of is from Ace Combat: Squadron Leader on the PS2, you played a character known only as Razgriz 1... I mean, really, Razgriz 1?

It also appears occasionally as Razgriz Lead or Razgriz Leader, they just make it sound even stupider.

Yeah but the Razgriz thing was a myth In AC 5, a demon defeated by the forces of mankind uniting, and the 1 goes into position of power In the squad.

I have Icelandic roots and I see nothing wrong with the name Bjorn, and it's certainly not a "ridiculous, over the top, stupid, twat faced name". You're making yourself look ignorant by insulting other culture's names.

Anyway, this isn't from a game, but I think the name "Renesmee" in Twilight is absolutely retarded. That is not a real name.

It wasn't really original. It's a reference to Guy Fawkes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes).
But I agree it's not very common, and Fawkes is definitely my favourite companion (I like him even more than Dogmeat even.)
