The Old Republic Conquers Space In Galactic Starfighter

Ever wanted a 12 vs 12 PvP battle in the stars, piloting your scout or gunship?

Star Wars: The Old Republic is finally about to let you become a galactic warrior, conquering the stars, in its latest DLC expansion Galactic Starfighter. Epic 12 vs. 12 battles await, with you dodging in and out of an asteroid belt, trying to get a good shot at your opponent before someone puts the blast on you. Current players who have, or get, Early Access will be enjoying this by December 3rd, while Preferred Status players get this January 14th 2014; everyone else will have to wait until February 14th 2014 to enjoy this free to play offering.

"Our goal with Star Wars: The Old Republic has always been to immerse players into their own Star Wars adventure and huge space battles are a vital part of fulfilling that fantasy," says Jeff Hickman, General Manager of BioWare Austin. The Early Access mob get exclusive paint jobs for their fighter, two pilot suits, and two special titles - Test Pilot and First Galactic Starfighter - of their own. Those with Preferred get two pilot suits and the Test Pilot title, in addition to their early entry to Galactic Starfighter.

Wondering how you get to be Early or Preferred? Well, if you're a former subscriber who dropped off the radar, you get to be Preferred just by rejoining the Old Republic universe. Or you can buy something - anything - from the online store, to get Preferred status. Early status will only be offered to those who have an active subscription on or before November 1st.

I admit I don't play TOR, but this actually makes me want to start playing, because I haven't had a good bit of space combat in ages and this looks kinda fun.

While this already has me excited, I'd be more excited if it had joystick or controller compatibility. Does anyone know for sure?

From the video it looks pretty much the same as the current space mission set up. I.E. blech.

Is it just me or is "MMO Flight Sim" the new MOBA? We have started to getting those a lot nowadays.
Warthunder, World of Warplanes, DCS online, that other Gaijin space sim game, Star Citizens a bit different but still counts and now this.

I think that's not entirely true, you should have preferred status even if you only ever played f2p and bought anything ever from the store, even if you only went for the $ 4,00 Cartel Coins.

Tho I think I read somewhere that you can steer freely, which would lend itself to joystick support. What irks me more is that it only seems to be PvP, though I could've misread. The official site claims 12v12 as well as multiple gameplay modes, I wonder if the latter means there's also gonna be PvE. With story even. Which is what I would be interested in.

I can't really blame Bioware for not having them compatible if that's the case. Most people who like themselves some flight sim like realistic flight sim, and this wouldn't be anything close to that. Even in flight MMOs like War Thunder or World of Warplanes, the joystick is compatible but most just use the mouse, and most people play the arcade battles.

Now that being said, I've been waiting for them to start fleshing out the space flight portion of the game. Granted Bioware is not the go-to dev for anything spaceflight related, but it was the one thing that made their MMO different than most other than the story narrative. I hope this takes off, so we can start literally seeing operations and flashpoints taking place just in space. Giant Return of the Jedi space battles are part of the appeal of the Star Wars IP as a whole, and letting people be a part of epic space battles would be awesome.

Yeah, it does look like you have more freedom in it now. If that's the case, I hope they patch it in for the other space missions that are already there.

Space combat remains the most boring content in star wars, dailies are more exciting than those identical railfights, I hope that this expansion will be interesting but seeing what bioware did to date I have to assume that space pvp will be a constant grind without a purpose.

Ok I admit that actually look pretty cool (I guess I thinking of myself saying pew pew pew over and over). Still I can easily see it being somewhat frantic with the red and green lazer firing about on the screen.

It's kind of funny how SWO is becoming (in reverse fashion) what I wanted a Freelancer II to be - a space sim where you could do interaction on the ground as well.

It's a stretch, but you catch my drift.

Now, can we get a standalone version?

I like this, but I'm worried what kind of Hutt Cartel BS is going to be imposed.

So....
Adjustable power systems?
Adjustable deflector shield systems?
Sophisticated sensor contact organization and selection?
Wingman commands other than break and attack, cover me and attack my current target?
AI wingmen at all?
AI opponents?
Capital ships with main battle guns?
Moon sized battle stations?
Space superiority fighters? Interceptors? All-purpose fighters? Attack fighters? Stealth scouts?
Interchangeable mission-relevant loadouts?
Attack missions? Picket patrols? Defense? Scrambles? Escort?

Mind you, this is what we had in the golden age of Totally-Games-developed Star Wars based space combat sims (around the same time as the Freespace series), let alone what new things Bioware could bring (e.g. low-altitude engagements, a universe featuring world surfaces, installations and atmospheres as well as jumps to other stars.)

I was interested in this, until I saw it was PvP only. I'd be more likely to buy it if the PvE missions were revamped to use this.

Hey volition! Are you making freespace 3 yet? I kind of want a single player space fighting game.
