About To Crash said:
The original lie, was made by Zarzenthax of the Elentia star galaxy, a species that gained sentience seven seconds after the universe began. It was Qym (a gender only they have) who said,"Zettle nal lent farra hentik malatan." Zarzenthx was then killed by being drawn and quartered, actually the oldest for of execution, which was also invented at that time. In case you're curious, Zarzenthax implied that Higilinguish's two mothers were fat. They were actually quite slender for their age.
I say this one should win, if for nothing more then changeling the spirit of Douglas Adams!

"I didn't steal your Mammoth furs, Honestly!"
If that was the first lie, how could they understand the meaning of honesty?
OT:"If you kill me with club, you not go to nice place over clouds"

"Go distract the mammoth by jumping in front of him real close."
"Isn't that dangerous?"
"No, I've done it tons of times."

Language was first invented so people could lie. How else could you communicate to a fellow cave man "No I didn't hit your wife over the head and drag her to my cave."

'It wasn't me'

The One Lie.
All others are just variations (apart from white lies, they aren't proper lies)

"Grunt?"

"Grunt."

"Grunt, grunt, grunt?"

"Grunt!"

And then a T-Rex ate both of them.

Sigh...

You do realize that T-Rex was extinct for many MILLIONS of years before mankind evolved.

And everyone that thinks that it was the serpent in the garden telling the first lie, keep reading and the book tells you that people lived for like 800 years.

Most likely, the first lie was 'I love you' or something to that effect.

Original lie?

It may not be the first, but its the best.

"Joseph, please, I swear, I'm a virgin. God came on me. I mean came unto me. And this child I carry be the son of god. Stop looking at me like that. I'm serious."

Thats what we call stickin' to your story.

It was a joke, man, a joke! A poorly crafted joke, perhaps, but a joke all the same.

If you really want to get all that literal about it, consider that the original question is flawed. There are so many varied species that utilize some form of deception, that it would be ridiculous to assume that mankind was foreign to it by the time we developed language. The question needs to be more specific for a better answer.

What was the first species to utilize deception for survival?
What was the first way a predecessor to mankind lied to one its kin?
What was the first lie told when we developed language, or the beginnings of such?
