The perfect RTS?

Lately, Ive been getting really into Starcraft 2. Or rather Ive been getting really into watching videos of it on Youtube. My computer is trash and can't run minecraft with fog all the way up. Yeah... I think I really like RTS games, despite my lack of experience with them. I love big battles and outsmarting people, and they are usually very balanced, and I definitely imagine the sense of power you get from having all this.

Back when I lived in my old home, I was friends with a neighbore kid who was a fellow geek. And his computer had The battle for middle earth 2 on it, the lord of the rings RTS game. I freaking loved that game, I put so much time into it, and I remember loving everey second of it. I remember the first time I got the mumikill (Giant elephants with archery towers on their backs) and plowed into the enemy base and was yelling "AWWWW YYYYEEEEAAAHH" while I smashed buildings. It was awesome. But then I moved away and I haven't played A real RTS game since. In the time between, I discovered my love of warhammer and not being able to play Dawn of war 2, its torture. It got me really craving the experience of commanding mass troops, something I may never really fell due to my computer situation.

So, for discussion, what is your idea of a perfect RTS? What world is it set in? Your own, or one that already exists? What units are in it, what factions? What is the gameplay like?

From what I gathered from RTS games I really want to play and obsess about, there are some things I really like, and some things I really want that I never see. I really like the idea of hero units, ones you create and are your big guns. But I really want to be able to create one of my own, and take that with me from battle to battle online or in a story mode and have it rank up, get better gear, etc. Something that also is a plus for me in RTS games are the factions. I love when they are all diverse and unique, that way people can really find one they like and stick with it, and it really helps when there are a lot to choose from. Starcraft 2 has really divers factions, but there are only 3. Granted Starcraft 2 may be an exception because of how diverse the factions really are and there aren't a lot of other factions there could be anyways.

What is your idea of a perfect RTS? What is your favorite existing one? Why do you play them?

I really don't like the huge base building style RTS since I mainly play singleplayer, and I find a lot of the build up kind of boring. My current favorite RTSs are the Soviet expansion for World in Conflict, which is amazing. It's territory resource based, plays well, and at least so far, has a great (if silly) campaign.

Back when I used to watch X play on G4, I remember seeing a review for a game that was like a mixture of steampunk and World of warcraft, where its online, had a team of people on the ground, like most other game, and one person as the RTS general thing that could decide what would be built, what objectives to accomplish, it looked cool. Sadly I don't remember its name, and I remember it getting a poor score, a 2 out of 5 I believe. But then again, hey, its X play.

No such thing as perfect RTS. I personally prefer Warhammer 40k Dawn of War II, because it takes a bunch of micromanagement, and small but smart moves can win you the game. If you like outsmarting people, I suggest playing R.U.S.E. It's the only real RTS game where you win by being smart, and not by macro- or micro-managing.

I doubt that there's a perfect RTS, but I also loved both BFME games, and Starcraft.

My idea of the perfect RTS is Dawn of War 2 with triple the map size and triple the number of units available at once.

And a campaign for every race.

Age of Empires 2... The graphics and gameplay may be old but I personally love that game. Starcraft (and warcraft [the RTS] for that matter.) was good but I still love my lil baby. And the expansion pack makes it even better. Screw planes, WE GOT BOATS BITCHES!

Warzone 2100. OOOOOOOOOLD but by far the best RTS ever made, so ambitious for its time. You can download it for free now too :). Basically the map is persistant, and expands more each level so you dont have to start making a base from scratch every time, some missions send you away on a dropship, where you call in reinforcements from your base. You can also design your own tanks using technology you research. Overall an amazing game.

(Linking mortars to a mobile sensor, sneaking it behind enemy lines and marking targets for tanks 15 miles away <3)

Download here if interested, its only 50mb :)

Dude, I fucking loved that game!
And I love you for bringing this to my attention.

Other than that - Men of War, I'd bet the lives of my poor unborn mutant childeren that this is the greatest WWW2 RTS ever made to this point, and I'd bet good money that (barring a sequal of some kind) none shal ever surpass it.

I also like Dawn of War.

Brutal legend was pretty awesome, but step online and you will get your ass kicked by either fire barons or reapers. The game was unbalanced as hell, it wasn't really meant for competition.

Age of Empires II. I still play this game every week. It's my pick.

Also Good: Rise of Nations, Warcraft 3, Homeworld, Homeworld 2 and Command and Conquer 3, Tiberium Wars.

Well Fire Barons used to be a bit overpowered, but that was patched ages ago. Reapers? Well they're 200 fans just for one, and have barely more health than a basic infantry unit. Pretty much any vehicle destroys them, I'd say they're pretty balanced.

Also the Tainted Coil's units have been made more expensive than they used to be. So yeah IMO the game is actually fairly balanced now.

Dawn of War, pre Soulstorm.
Retribution will be good since they cured that cancerous tumor.

The perfect RTS = Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge with some more Yuri and a side-helping of Yuri
Yeah, an RTS without tactics is Yuris revenge.

I mean have you ever taken the power of a base out with UFOs then stormed it with BRAINTANKS?!
