Hi everyone.
Now I know a huge number of gamers love multiplayer, and many of them will hate me for saying this, but its just something I've wanted to say for some time.
Multiplayer is becoming a detriment to the video game industry. It seems to me these days that games manufacturers and designers are putting more and more effort into refining and improving the look, gameplay and mechanics of the multiplayers aspects of modern games than they are with the more solo aspects of it.
Take for example, first person shooters. Now I know I've already posted a thread regaridng how I feel about these games but lets just look at the multiplayer aspect for the time being. Have you noticed that whenever game developers, gamers, or even game reviewers talk about these games, the multiplayer (or lack thereof) is considered to be one of the most important elements. If a game does not even have one, it is alsmost always considered a let-down there and then, without even giving the game a chance.
Games with heavy multiplayer focus also seem to lack very much in the story department. The writing is often ear-gratingly bad as is the dialogue and for the most part it's only the graphics with improve over time.
I will say this once, just so everyone who reads this know how I feel on that matter:
"GOOD GRAPHICS DOES NOT MAKE A GOOD GAME!!!"
Now, lets move on to pc-type games. If such games have a multiplayer element to them then something like a bad internet connection will sometimes result in the game being unable to rub properly, even if you did not want to use the multiplayer. Steam games being a particular problem of this type.
The community of muliplayer gamers is laso a problem for the image of gamers as a whole. Yes i know that many will just mind their own business and not offend anybody but for the few that spout profanity, insulting behaviour and just general unpleasantness, gamers image in hte mainstream society is being tarnished. We have enough problems with gaming being accused of causing every problem under the sun without this lot making things worse.
Single player campaigns are becoming shorter and shorter these days, just as multiplayer is becoming bigger. I do not know if the formers is a consequence of the latter, but if it is, then it's just once more problem that multiplayer is causing us. Single player campaigns or stories should ALWAYS be the focus of the game developers, not the side-activity.
I'm sure your all tired of my rambling so I will just wrap things up. If you love multiplayer, I mean no offence towards any of you. Multiplayer games may sell great and add to the coffers of the industry, but if it does that by sacrificing all the elements which should make games great, story, character, innovation, individual experiences, then I have to say, that is not a trade-off I would ever make myself.
