I know that feeling. I keep getting further and further behind what I want to play. There are just too many games that I like. I like many genres and this is the worst time of year for me. Still haven't started Skyrim etc. from last year.

Suddenly I'm happy that the only games I looked forward to this year are Mass Effect 3, Borderlands, Fall of Cybertron, and Black Ops II.

Yeah... and then Steam holds a super sale on games you always wanted to play but never had the time to do so, or never heard of but seems completely awesome... and including the brand-new DLC for them and a bunch of other games with it at like 75% off.

Dammit Steam! /fistshake

If you're coming at the hobby and thinking "I have to play all these games, oh god," you are probably doing it wrong.
It's not just a hobby, Erin reviews games for a living.
I'm talking about Grey, silly billy; "I am not one of those people. I must play all the games."
The weird thing is, that seems to be how most modern gamers are. I got my start with 8 and 16 bit games, so I always had the mindset that finishing the game is optional, and actually a significant achievement. I never got out of that mind set, and could count the number of campaigns I've completed on, at most, my fingers and toes. Most gamers these days seem to buy the things on day one and blow through them in a weekend, which has just never made sense to me, either financially or time wise.

Question: Which is the minimun amount of time a critic has to play a game before being allowed to toss it in the garbage?

Well, I for one am very interested in Battlefield Modern: Honor of Duty. Have you seen the screens? I bet they have some sick modes multiplayer.

Classy Erin is classy as hell.

On an unrelated note, it was great to see Cory at the Expo (I wasn't there personally, but I did see the vid).

I felt kind of sad that him and Chris from NRA weren't getting as much mic time as the other guys :D
You did take a picture with him... sort of...
Nasrin was hogging me. I didn't get any dude hugs T-T

Well, except ThyNameIsMud...

But that guy is creepy as hell :D
He just loves Justin Bieber. Strange yes, but someones got to love the kid right?
Several layers of wrong, what that man thinks about that boy.
God damn it... we done fucked up.

I have been Biebered D:

Hm? I don't get ya. Why is it worse to buy a game and finish it quickly, than to play it and never finish it? Do you mean, you buy a game, play it for a long time and never finish it?
I did that with the really old games, yeah. Modern games I just don't feel any obligation to finish unless they're /really/ keeping my attention; I'll switch to one of the dozens of other games that I can afford because I never buy on launch day XD

For the most part, 6 hours is the magic number for whether or not I'll finish a game, going up to 10 if it's really good. If I manage to finish a game that takes more than that, it's some ungodly example of gaming perfection. Multiplayer games are different, though; I'll put weeks or months of my life into those in 10 minute snippets, because a complete experience that takes 10 minutes fits into my life a hell of a lot better than one that takes 40 hours.

Edit: Also, my point was more on the buying on day one only to blow through it thing. It just makes more sense to build up a bit of a backlog, so that you aren't stuck paying $60 a pop for something that takes you very little time to finish. Why do that when you can wait a few months and get it on sale (or even regular price) for $20? Or wait a year or two and get it for $2.50-$5.00, assuming you play PC games?

The thing about feeling no obligation to finish games was to explain why I feel no pressure to get them early: I don't feel much pressure with this hobby at all. I mean, it's not like the game won't be there six months or more down the line. And I know a lot of people do it to get access to the multiplayer before it dies, but honestly, if it dies in anything under ten years, it's not worth bothering with in the first place. I can still play Unreal Tournament '99 online if I want, because it's an absolute classic and people still care. Nobody plays Bioshock 2 online anymore because it was tacked on to fill in a box for a publisher; it's not up there with the great classics of multiplayer, so who cares about it?

But that smile... it's hard to speak to someone when you feel the overwhelming urge to sock them in the mouth every time you look at them. D:

I think the is one section I think we can partly blame on reviewers and gaming sites. Publishers would be more inclined to release games in the summer if reviewers wouldn't forget about them when considering GOTY.
