The Riddler Returns In Arkham City

Riddle me this: Who's green and evil and loves crazy word puzzles?

With Batman: Arkham City's release fast-approaching, Rocksteady is really starting to ramp up the character reveals. This week, it turns out that Edward Nigma (AKA The Riddler) is returning to Gotham City so he can harass The Dark Knight once again. This time, though, it looks like the criminal will have a more active role than he did in the first game.

Of course that's not saying much. All the Riddler has to do is make a physical appearance, as opposed to just being a voice in Batman's ear like he was in Arkham Asylum, and he'll be more of a presence than he was last time. Based on the trailer, it looks like that's just what's going to happen. However, instead of simply whispering sinister riddles, the man is apparently going to force Batman to solve puzzles that have lives at stake.

What will be interesting to see is just how dark and sinister Rocksteady makes the character. The Riddler's had a long, diverse history with DC comics and has varied between appearing as a joke of a criminal to a sinister mastermind (feel free to read <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Hush-Jeph-Loeb/dp/1401223176>Batman: Hush for a great example of the latter). The trailer certainly implies that the character will be a definite threat to players.

They've actually made the Riddler creepy... huh. All those spinning blades and death traps, he reminds me of Jigsaw. I just got annoyed with him in Arkham Asylum though.

"I see you can't solve all my riddles! You fool!"
"I'm sorry, I'm busy dealing with the Joker. You know, a real mastermind?"
"Waaaah! Pay attention to me!"

First thought that came to mind when he started talking about being smarter then a bat "Riddle me this and riddle me that, do you really know the mind of bat?" Anyone else?

I do like this "Jigsaw" re imagining of the Joker. It keeps his campy gimmick intact, while still making him a credible- and creepy- threat.

(Applauds Rocksteady)

I kind of hope they make the puzzles hard, and don't tell you where to go so it is like actually fighting the Riddler.

It's not actually a reveal though.. The trailer is cool, and extra info, but they mentioned The Riddler during the E3 showing.
EDIT: From the trailer, he does seem to be quite sinister in the game. Which is awesome. So excited for this game.

I'm getting a very distinct Saw impression from this trailer.

I'm a little anxious to see whether or not Rocksteady can make the lightning strike twice.

Aw, yes. Excellent. I'd always thought The Riddler was an undervalued villain.

And for those pointing out the Saw aspects: I'd say there's a key difference from what we see on the trailer. Batman's being challenged to save others by solving the riddles, not themselves. That's crucial. The Riddler should never kill the person he's riddling. He's driven by an obsessive need to prove his intelligence over others. Killing them defeats that purpose: He wants them to know they're inferior to him. He wants them to live with that. And what greater prize than the World's Greatest Detective?

I've always loved and hated the riddler. He's such a stupid idea. Ya know how he could thwart batman? But not leaving intentional damn clues all over the place.
It's so self-defeating, stupid, arrogant, and did i say stupid.

It's so much like a real criminal it hurts.

But the thing is, if he didn't leave the clues, it wouldn't matter to him. Then he's just surprised Batman. No, he wants to assert his intellectual dominance over Batman.

What really amuses me about this line of logic, though, is that it suggests Batman could finally beat the Joker by just agreeing to a chess match with him once a week. I'm pretty sure The Riddler wouldn't care about harming people/crime if he didn't have to do that so Batman would pay attention to him.
