The scariest music in video gaming

With Halloween just days away, horror is on everyone's mind. In video games, music can play a huge part in setting a scary tone, so I wanted to know what people thought the scariest music they have come across is?

Mine isn't even from a horror game, it's from Sonic. Go look up the Sonic drowning music.

If you haven't played Sonic, then you probably don't know what I'm talking about. Everyone else (if they're anything like me) is thinking about the claustrophobic, heart racing feeling of terror that music induces. The way the music increases in urgency, in a situation where you're already trapped, underground, and slowed down from the worlds fastest pin cushion to slower than a snail, it's a perfect example of music heightening an experience.

So what's your scariest music in games?

Not that impressive, but these three songs always just creeped me out whenever I heard them.

Music isn't scary.

Ever.

It can certainly enhance scariness, but on it's own it's just music.

Can't remember any scary music in my life as a gamer, though it is unsettling when the soundtrack is nothing but cavern ambience that reflects the creepy dungeons you're in.

In some cases, very true.

Music can certainly enhance the atmosphere, but isn't really inherently scary. Still, some to a damn good job of making the game all the more scarier.

Darn, someone beat me to it.

But I like to add that the music from the Silent hill games(of course that means up to the third game) is very good at scaring you.

It's a bit scarier in the game, still creepy though.

Music never scares me in games.

The most tense moments are when everything goes silent, and you can hear the sound o your footsteps, the wind quietly blowing, water dripping, knowing that something is approaching you, silently, stealthily, and you don't know where it's going to come from, or when.
I almost agree, except... It's worse when a terror track jumps in and makes you jump, and keeps going (LOUDLY) while you still don't know where the thing is. It makes me more likely to try to run away.

I rarely find music itself scary, but well timed and executed sound effects, in the right game, can be terrifying. I used this exact example in another context in a thread yesterday, but the sound effects from the STALKER games (especially at night) are near perfect for this; the ambiant noises fill a very similar role to music while being within the world... meaning it isn't some fantasy opera in a design studio making that noise, it's the bloodsucker right behind you!!!

Story? Statue? I'm confused, what am I missing?

This. [http://www.youshouldnthavedonethat.net/index.php/chapters/]

I'm not too good with mildly scary stuff, and stuff like this gets to me.

...it's just the context that makes that bloody statue and that song scary for me.

...you've suffered a terrible fate, haven't you?..
