im not saying i think he is speaking another language,
Then why bother replying originally...

i simply point out that if people dont have proper SPELLING and GRAMMAR, it may be becouse they are not english/american ect.
Well he obviously is, so again - why post?

the whole ppl ect. point doesnt even bother me, if they wanna use it, just let m?
I think not - if people grudgingly accepted those people who wish to use text speak and refuse to try nd use correct spelling the forum would be much harder to read - discussion would not be as interesting nor credible as it is currently. Try reading your posts before you submit them - you have included a wide variety of spelling errors in just a few lines.

Off-topic on an off-topic thread (or what should be)...amazing...I'm new, and I consider myself quite proficient with english...

Back on topic, though, the search button needs help, but there are A LOT of repeated threads. Chances are, if you type it in, you're bound to find *some*thing to that effect...

English is my native language yet I can still speak fluent French and know the correct grammatical terms. It shouldn't be a problem. If your finding spelling difficult get an in-browser spell check and set it to English.

The trick is related to Google-fu: identify the key words/phrases and use ONLY them. If you type out the entire name of what you'd expect the thread to be, it'll miss. Hell, even using the word 'the' might cause a miss.
That being said, I far prefer sniping/snarking in other people's topics to starting my own.

D_987, you're completely right that he has no excuse. However, "your"->"you're".

As long as you tried to use the search feature then you've done your part. I don't think anybody asks for a total page by page search, just make an atempt.

If you searched and found nothing, then its not your fault if the thread allready exsists. Unless its on the front page, then you have no excuse.

But people whining about searching doesn't make much of a big deal out of it. So if you've used the search button, ingore them, yes?
You see here is my problem with it. I look up various different ways to ask a question I want to ask, say something like "How many people enjoy Fallout 3?" and I find nothing but random posts about fallout here and there, or people mentioning in something like "Best game."

So I post something along those lines and almost instantly "OH MY GOD this thread has been done already! NOOB use the search bar!" I find out that it was named something strange like "A question to all you crazy addicts" or something like "Are you as addicted as I am?"

It does a terrible job with putting the words I used together to look into what they are saying, and random titles don't help.

I am sick of getting told that over and over again when it is almost impossible to find what I am looking for.

Yeah, I know. The search engine is fucked by the moment. But the mods have said that they're gooing to fix it. You can still find something, though. It'll only take you half a day to look through it all. And you don't have to to be justified ...

And witht he fucked up title. If the title does not represent what the thread contains, and it is indeed the thread you're looking for, I say you still have justification. It just comes down to a matter of self-dicipline. As long as you do indeed make an effort, to make sure you don't double post a thread, I say go for it. You have my blessing to ignore search-button-whining. Because they usually only shows up once per thread. If they do show up multiple times, there's a reason for it.

Uhm .. Bottom line! You have made an effort, and there's only one whining. Screw him, enjoy your thread.

It's not really screwed up, of the two, the google one is the harder to identify with (Google doesn't seem to index a LOT of forums very well, especially ones like these that are difficult to segregate) but it still works (see Google-Foo comments earlier). The other one (smaller, actually says "search forums") works perfectly - the problem is if you type "search button" in to it, you get a thousand hits of so-called "deja-nazi's" screaming the phrase like a mantra of war. But the search works perfectly well.

Enhancing it would be nice, I'd like to see a "forum topics and first post only" checkbox when I search, which would have removed a lot of the fluff from the screen - except that now we are seeing a rise of people saying "I used the search button but..." in their first post.

Anyway, if you think the Escapist is elitist you should have tried to get on to Government Security a few years ago.

True enough. The part with checkboxes would probably do the trick. But I still think the search engine has some clutter with it.

No thank you. I never work for the government. I work against it.
Seriously, though. What's that story?

government security is a forum on the internet, I haven't been back in a while (I used to lurk a lot with an account to see all the "members only" posts), but registration used to be damned near impossible - you'd have to write a paper on something that nobody else had done.

I got sick of the bs "information" posts that were coming out and general lack of poor grammar so I just signed out and rarely head back.

Yueap. That's something we don't need here at the escapist (I actually wrote "elitist" ... My bad.). We're too good for that! ;)

To the OP, I agree. I have noticed that when I do use the search button, and find a similar thread to what I was gonna post, and post in it, no one usually replies after me. But if I create a while new thread, I can get a fair amount of replies.

But at the same time, the threads I post aren't your run of the mill "Favorite video game character" or some crap like that.

Every intelligent person the internet is a member at the escapist.

Nitpicking aside I tried searching for this very topic and couldn't find it.
If you search for 'search' or anything regarding the title or topic, you will not get this thread (but you will get every other thread where someone mentions using the search button as a passing comment). Ironically, if you search for something in the on-going fighting in this thread, such as 'elitist twat', this thread will come up without any problems.

Sometimes i just type really really fast. And i miss keys, and i don't always go back and proofread myself because this isn't what i do for a living. I don't feel the need to express myself in gramatic perfection on a video game forum. oh sorry "the escapist" So tragic i know. Must be cause i'm "new" and the space machine with the jumbled up letter tray in front of me confuses my simple brain.
