He's a former operative. Calling it now.
I bet you're right about that... Should be a pretty cool story nonetheless.

"You really get to see the entire evolution of this man... Book's HAIR.
Book's HAIR specifically is a great character to do the origin of because we know so little about it in the show, the little hints that we get are so enticing and his history is very... complicated. It's an intricate set of circumstances that created the man HAIR we meet in the show so that is very fun to explore."

It'll still be there... Waiting.

Plus, he's dead, and the series is dead, so who cares?
For you to know that he is dead means that you must have at least watched Serenity. Assuming that you watched them in the right order,(Firefly first and then Serenity), you clearly cared enough about it to actually watch Serenity. Therefore following that train of logic, I call you a hypocrite for not caring about Book being dead. As for the series being dead, it may be off of the air, but this new novel clearly shows the series as being very much alive.
Hey man, you have to understand that threads like this are kind of like a transexual convention, you know there has to be at least one dick in there somewhere...

Your point: AGREED ;)

I say reformed bounty hunter.

Early recognised him by sight, which means he's one of three things:

1. Famous
2. A Criminal
3. Competition (ie. Bounty Hunter)

1 is unlikely, since very few characters who weren't knee-deep in the Alliance recognised him.
2 wouldn't work. Early would either capture him or shoot him, and the Alliance would have had no interest in helping him, and certainly wouldn't have let him leave afterwards.
3 makes sense. Early would know him because all good bounty hunters know their competition, and if Book was in good standing with the Alliance (Who are what, whitecoats?) that would explain his welcome with the alliance.

(For those confused, I refer to the episodes "Objects in Space" and "Safe")

Anyway, i also have to say want want want want give to me want want want want.

I guess Whedon is finally putting Firefly out to pasture. For years he seemed hesitant to continue the story in through other means such as comics because he seemed to be holding onto the slim chance that the show may be continued. But with him tied up on Dollhouse, Morena Baccarin on V, Nathan Fillion on Castle and Summer Glau on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and the sets destroyed it seems as if it is long past.

They could do better. Explaining his past is ruining part of the mystery that makes Book such an awesome character. We already pretty much know what had to happen--he was an operative, killed a few peeps, and unintentionally got someone immeasurably close to him killed, an act for which he is now atoning, after having avenged said person years ago. To further atone, he goes to the abbey, and presto! Right where he is today. Well, at the start of Firefly--'cause he's dead now.

So go on, Whedon, ruin some of the mystery that made your one-season smash hit what it is today.

I thought it was fairly clear that he was an Operative.
I'd love it if he was locked up for murdering people and claiming he was an operative, but he was just a nutcase. I'm going to go for top freelance assassin with a fake id.

How would a nutcase know about the operatives? They didn't exactly seem to be common knowledge.

Can someone tell me why Firefly was canceled? And why I should watch it and also why no other station took it so it wouldn't be canceled

Crap, stuff like this makes me the occasional pirate. It is not gonna be available to me here in NL and since firefly is dead it never will be. I will read it though, one way or another!

I think the studio didn't see any money in it after even 9 Episodes aired. Still if you like SF shows, this one is a must watch. it has a cult-following which should explain enough about it's popularity. I still think Wehdon ripped off Cowboy Bebop to make it though.

Seems like the Whedon brothers like finishing things in comic format. It's like,
"You wanna cancel my show?, ok see if I care"
*starts drawing*

This is probably the one thing dealing with Firefly that I'm gonna have to pass on.

Some things I just think are better off not knowing, good mystery is always a good thing to have, I always liked that everything Shepherd did in that show (and the film) made your mind wonder as to who this guy was. But ultimately, it could never come close to some of the ideas that I've had.

It's like if Batman was real, and all the stories and legends spread about him, all making you think he was supernatural or other-worldly. I wouldn't want to know the truth.

Logan, might I suggest you run your article by an editor (or friend, rather) in the future? I know this was put a 1/4th page snippet, but I had to make up lots of the broken sentences an illogical clause leave-offs in my head.

(P.S.: I'm sorry if your first language is not English)

Btw, I loooove that picture. :) It must be the scene where Book finds God. :)
Ron Glass said, when asked about his character, "Book found God in a bowl of soup" (among other things... that was said, not in the soup). Based on that goofy grin, Book finds the moment hi-larious!
