Parallel universes/storylines, I believe. They probably didn't just want to stick with a story about depression and hallucinations but about video game hallucinations in particular. Still, I'd agree that a new, albeit similar character might've been the better choice.

That's because it's morally reprehensible to expect to be paid for creating entertaining content for other people to enjoy. Also since it's hard to convey over text, make sure to read that last sentence with biting sarcasm that would break most detectors.
