The Sims. What comes to mind? Lots of expansion packs? Yup, me too. >.< I've been a fan of the Sims since.... Well, way too long. I have EVERY expansion pack for 1 & 2. And now the Sims 3 is out. *Sigh*
Okay, so... Where to start? Hmm.... I'll go from most-hyped to least hyped, mmkay?
Open world: You can go anywhere without slamming into a loading screen. Sounds good, right? Now put it in the context that the other families you're obssesivly controling. They're still living, too. Cooking, cleaning, dating, working, living, dying. All at once. You CAN turn this off, according to an interveiw with... someone, I forget. But I haven't found it.
Traits system: Okay, in my opinion, this is the best new addition to the series. Traits ranging from clumsy to evil to vegetarian make sure that you can create ANYONE you want. Some are great for laughs, some are pointless and some are downright annoying. But, find a list of the traits, and think of what your friends can be described by.
Aging: Eh. It was in the second one, so I probably shouldn't have put it this high on the list, but meh. I really hate it. I like to make very detailed families, but when a kid growns up into a teen, they change clothes. At least you can turn it off. Or on EPIC. It makes your sims live for basicly a year in real time.
Creat-a-style: A neat tool, fun to make houses that are covered in leapord print. But it's just a aestetic tool. You can paint everything your sim's favorite color, but they won't care.
Create-a-sim: Okay. Minor updates include: being able to precisly adjust hair color, change the color of clothes, and adding a seperate slider for muscles AND fatness. Wow. None of those particularly interest me.
Rotate 45 degree increments: Woo. I don't care. You can make rooms look more natural, but unless you plan on updating to the grand exchange, it's a waste of time.
So, final ratings?
Open world: 6/10 I like the idea, and it was done well, but it doesn't flow well with the game.
Traits system: 8/10 Interesting traits and well-implemented social interactions that change with your sim's traits.
Aging: 5/10 It was in the second game, so its not that great of an "addition" but the fact that you choose when to let them grow up really makes it better for me.
Create-a-style: 3/10 Not well iplemented into the game, but an amusing tool to play with.
Create-a-sim: 7/10 Works just as well as in previous games, and the tweaks make it that mch better.
Rotating in 45 degree increments: 4/10 It's good for people who like to make good-looking houses, but there's really no point for it.
Well, overall, the game's pretty good. I'll give you one last number score:
The Sims 3: 7/10
It's a fun game, and worth picking up if you like the series, but if you don't, nothing in the game will change your mind on that fact.
Now, bring on the expansion packs. >.<
