The Sims. What comes to mind? Lots of expansion packs? Yup, me too. >.< I've been a fan of the Sims since.... Well, way too long. I have EVERY expansion pack for 1 & 2. And now the Sims 3 is out. *Sigh*

Okay, so... Where to start? Hmm.... I'll go from most-hyped to least hyped, mmkay?

Open world: You can go anywhere without slamming into a loading screen. Sounds good, right? Now put it in the context that the other families you're obssesivly controling. They're still living, too. Cooking, cleaning, dating, working, living, dying. All at once. You CAN turn this off, according to an interveiw with... someone, I forget. But I haven't found it.

Traits system: Okay, in my opinion, this is the best new addition to the series. Traits ranging from clumsy to evil to vegetarian make sure that you can create ANYONE you want. Some are great for laughs, some are pointless and some are downright annoying. But, find a list of the traits, and think of what your friends can be described by.

Aging: Eh. It was in the second one, so I probably shouldn't have put it this high on the list, but meh. I really hate it. I like to make very detailed families, but when a kid growns up into a teen, they change clothes. At least you can turn it off. Or on EPIC. It makes your sims live for basicly a year in real time.

Creat-a-style: A neat tool, fun to make houses that are covered in leapord print. But it's just a aestetic tool. You can paint everything your sim's favorite color, but they won't care.

Create-a-sim: Okay. Minor updates include: being able to precisly adjust hair color, change the color of clothes, and adding a seperate slider for muscles AND fatness. Wow. None of those particularly interest me.

Rotate 45 degree increments: Woo. I don't care. You can make rooms look more natural, but unless you plan on updating to the grand exchange, it's a waste of time.

So, final ratings?

Open world: 6/10 I like the idea, and it was done well, but it doesn't flow well with the game.

Traits system: 8/10 Interesting traits and well-implemented social interactions that change with your sim's traits.

Aging: 5/10 It was in the second game, so its not that great of an "addition" but the fact that you choose when to let them grow up really makes it better for me.

Create-a-style: 3/10 Not well iplemented into the game, but an amusing tool to play with.

Create-a-sim: 7/10 Works just as well as in previous games, and the tweaks make it that mch better.

Rotating in 45 degree increments: 4/10 It's good for people who like to make good-looking houses, but there's really no point for it.

Well, overall, the game's pretty good. I'll give you one last number score:

The Sims 3: 7/10
It's a fun game, and worth picking up if you like the series, but if you don't, nothing in the game will change your mind on that fact.

Now, bring on the expansion packs. >.<

Alright, Fairly good review.
Could've done with something about the level of the new graphics and stuff.
But meh, describing the new updates and changes was a good idea.
Tbh, The Sims 3 is okay...
But the Sims 2 seems better in my opinion.
If anything, they seem to have alienated the idea of Real Life by alienating the player with so many things that a character does when they shouldn't do, the traits turn against you and end up making your Sim act completely rubbish.
The 'New' features are nothing - they were just toying with the stuff they COULD'VE put into the Sims 2 - and added a better graphics pack.

So yeah, Expansion Packs better prove me wrong on this.

Nice review; informative and structured. I only wish the expansion packs would be as such structured.

Wish I read this a few weeks ago when I bought my copy. It feels just like sims 2 with a few addons put on the top to disguse it as a new game. Kept my interest for a week or so I guess it cant be that bad if your a big fan of the sims, seems I fell out with the game a long time ago alas.

All I did was attempt to kill my sims in every way. Though they don't have the flies eating you option anymore.

Yeah, they saved up all the good stuff so that you could buy it with real money which to me is pointless.

The really bad thing about the fact that it's just Sims 2 with open world and full colour options is that they could have done that with (guess what!) another expansion pack and saved people lots of money. but that would be too easy, right?

And why charge so little for such siple updates? Ha. No, Maxis is in it to win it. And that means scamming the hell outta us. -.-

immersion, immersion, immersion! the level of interactions between sims is greatly enhanced. write a book, and see it in the library. be a good painter, and the neighbors will ask you to paint something for them. the social network is a great deal of the experience in a sims game, and it wasn't even mentioned in this review!

You sound like a person who doesn't enjoy the Sims in the first place...

I thought all the additions were great in relation to where the franchise should be going.

Actually, no. I've been playing the Sims forever. Not an exact measure of time, but as long as I can remember, I've loved them.

Yeah, the additions were great. And this is where the Sims 2 franchise should have been going with a new expansion pack.
Yes, the graphics are great and stuff but it just feels like a better remake of the Sims 2. It's like someone taking an old Mario game, bringing it up to speed with the graphics and sticking a few new moves and levels in.
You might as well keep the old one that you had.

Overall it was a good game and stuff... But it just feels nostalgic when you play it.
