The most destructive phrase of all is "Your mother was right!"
Second place goes to "That's just the way things are"
You know that slavery used to be the way things are? Then people decided that it should change. If we kept everything the way things were, we would still be hunting with sticks and pointy rocks. It flies in the face of evolution and progress in general.

Hey guys, i've got a few as well.

1. Kanker
Cancer in dutch, it's used quite often as a expletive for whatever. Now let me be clear, i'm ok with using it as material for jokes. Just not as an expletive, i feel it makes cancer trivial in a bad way. I feel it's degrading to anyone having cancer. Hell if someone stubs his toe and yells cancer or uses it in another way. It's just wrong and makes me rage.

2. So it's your job to wash someone's ass?
I work in healthcare as a male nurse and this gets me so incredily pissed off. No shit! YES! I wash people, including their butt. But that's not all dammit, nursing is one of the most demanding proffesions out there! ffing hell, at the best of times there are 4 or more patients directly dependant of my care. And that means i do virtually everything, from binding wounds to offer emotional support to kicking some doctor's ass for not prescribing the right meds.
It's just really degrading.

3. You can't imagine how hard i have to work at my job.
My mom said this to me a couple of times. . . . . needlessly at some point my rage went of like a nuke.
Just because you see me relaxing when i get home doesn't mean i do nothing all day! To hell with that, i have to get up 4:45 am and have to work till 4 pm. Just because you don't see me doesn't mean i'm home all the time. Oh and yea the day you thought i slept all day? I came of the night shift then. Wich was a freaking doozy if you wish to know. Just 1 death, ran our asses off trying to save the patiënt, my collegues tied up there, all 26 other patients woke because of the commotion and i had to care of them because of collegues being tied up. So i had the responsibillity for 26 patients. . . oh and forgot to mention i was an intern back then. . . Pffff. . . .rant is over now. But above story goes a long way of explaining why i hate people saying that (especially my mom :p ), it's just shows how ignorant you can be towards others.

Sorry for the wall of text, but here you have it.
cheers

Quoting any Biblical passage for use as "evidence" in a argument to ANYONE but a Christian.

Additionally

Quoting any Biblical passage for use as "evidence" in a argument with MOST Christians.

"It's my belief." or "It's my faith."

I can't stand those phrases because they're the equivalent of saying 'I was born with a brain, but I refuse to use it. I will instead accept what other people have told me is true and go through no effort on my own to determine if that's the case.'

Less egregious than when this is said in the refusal to accept things we already know. Like evolution. Just winds me right up.

Suffice to say for myself, having never been a victim of rape but understanding it from the perspective of some who have, I would deem humour around sex crimes to be not just trivialising, but damaging to the chances of victims to recieve any kind of justice. It is also for this reason I would give anyone who is found to be fabricating a charge of rape to get a sentence in line with a rapist.

If justice is not seen to be done then justice ceases to deter those who would succumb to its temptations.
Well you're wrong, jokes won't affect how sex crimes are treated in court. If you don't think that these crimes are being dealt with correctly then arguing about jokes on a forum isn't going to change anything, especially when the jokes don't trivialize the crime.

You're giving rape more priority than it needs and seem more than happy to jail people accused of rape and then free them and swap them for a liar if they're found innocent. To be honest I've lost all interest in arguing with someone I've decided is white knighting.
Fair enough - agree to disagree I suppose.

You obviously have a problem with someone who disagrees with you on this so whatever floats your boat in the end - even though I think youre being a little naive to suppose trial by jury isnt affected be societal concerns - of which jokes and humour are a part.

Please though dont start name calling, and insulting though - thats just sloppy and more than a little pointless.

'Of course I know how to build a stable nuclear reactor. Quit your whining.' That one got me into a bit of trouble last time...too many people died.

Holy hell, I didn't expect to see annoying phrases used - in context - in a thread about annoying phrases.

My own personal peeves are "agree to disagree", "everyone has/I have a right to their/my opinion" (to quote George Carlin, "...my opinion is that you have no right to your opinion!"), and any time anyone asks me to respect them. No, I will not "agree to abide by" you. Nor will I have respect for you (which I'm sure is what you meant).

Ahem.

Depending on the reaction to it, the single most destructive phrase is "I love you." In a romantic context of course.

"It is what it is."

I'm not sure anyone ever says this in regard to something that actually always "is what it is", like gravity or the fucking sun - probably because no one ever needs to be told such things are what they are. No, people generally say "it is what it is" when they're making a conscious and reprehensible decision to behave in a way that negatively affects you.

Caught cheating on you? "It is what it is."
Screwed you out of a bunch of money? "It is what it is."
Mocked you ruthlessly in front of a bunch of people? "It is what it is."

It's a way for a shitty person doing a shitty thing to somehow avoid saying "I'm a shitty person doing a shitty thing."

I wouldn't really say destructive..but I do get extremely pissed off with one:

"Well thats my/your opinion"

Well no shit sherlock, here I thought I was actually having a conversation about something and instead your going to point out the fucking obvious. What's next on your blatant observation spree? Maybe that the wheels on the bus do in fact go round and round?

'It's Gods will? or ?God tests us" when bad things happen makes me want to rip a person?s face off. Especially if it?s in regards to my Grandfather having dementia.

"I love you", it can either be the best thing that you have ever said to someone, or it can turn into a massive clusterfuck

"I'm just saying."

Which is complete crap because no one is ever 'just saying' since there is always some intent, reason, or something that you're trying to get across.

Someone said "Suck it up, Princess" to me once - this was at the time I was paying my way through library school at 6-8 hours a day and working 20+ hours a week. I think I was probably complaining about finding the time to do homework. Or eat. Or sleep. The girl who said this to me was a single mother who was single because she slept with her husband's best friend and lamented the position she was now in... except she now lived with the best friend and he drove her everywhere and bought her nice things, because some men are assholes and morons. And I don't think she even graduated high school.

I still get mad over thinking about that comment.

Also... nothing good ever comes from someone saying "Samantha" when they want to speak to me instead of "Sam". Same principal as parents or teachers - even now when I hear my full name, I know something's wrong or not going to end well.

To sum up: Someone using your full name instead of yuor shortened one/nickname and "Suck it up, princess/buttercup" or similar thereof.
That made me mad too - When you are at a low point and, because I'm a guy, they say "Grow a pair"/"Man up". That is SO annoying. I feel your pain!

I only narrowly avoided a beating by dropping the word "obsessed" to the wrong person. It turns out that the word had very different connotations for each of us.

Wow, it took this long for someone to say it. I'm impressed.

Ooh, I thought of a new one rather than my previous rather snarky excuse for a comment. When talking about jokes or comedy or whatever, when somebody goes "it's just too smart for you."
Oh, fuck off. I'm not the smartest guy ever, but I'm not stupid, and I'm certainly smart enough to understand a joke on the fucking Big Bang Theory. The reason I don't find it funny is because IT ISN'T.
