My girlfriend and I both agree that one phrase in particular needs to die in a fire made of zombies on fire:

"It can't be helped."

It's the defeatist cry of lazy fuckwits who never did anything, won't do anything, and will never be anything...because (DUR!) it can't be helped! (Whatever it is.)

This really annoys me, I have a friend whose always complaining she needs a job, yet "It can't be helped" that she hasn't got one. Yet, she's NEVER been on the Job site once. It can bloody be helped. ( BTW that's a great rant! )

A good destructive phrase online is "OK/Fine/" in a conversation. It just kills any sort of conversation, making it entirely one way. I can't even count the number of arguments I know have happened because one person has to carry the whole conversation.

Usually it's something along the lines of "sort yourself out" or "get over it" when it comes to mental issues.

That's led to everything from long debates to fistfights from experience; I know it sounds conceited to say that unless you've had it, you wouldn't understand, but that's just it; no amount of well-wishing and empathy will give you an experience of what we have to put up with.

I'm not sure anyone ever says this in regard to something that actually always "is what it is", like gravity or the fucking sun - probably because no one ever needs to be told such things are what they are. No, people generally say "it is what it is" when they're making a conscious and reprehensible decision to behave in a way that negatively affects you.

Caught cheating on you? "It is what it is."
Screwed you out of a bunch of money? "It is what it is."
Mocked you ruthlessly in front of a bunch of people? "It is what it is."

It's a way for a shitty person doing a shitty thing to somehow avoid saying "I'm a shitty person doing a shitty thing."

This phrase has never been used by someone screwing me over. I use it to calm down my friend when he is over analyzing social situations, or anything for that matter. It's always been used as a "Stop thinking about it, let's think about something else." around me. Either that or to drop a topic of conversation.

OT: Any insult pointed at a female in the USA. With a small exception of slut/whore/etc. (but this is becoming less of an exception). It instantly turns into a shitstorm, there is no brewing. On Topic: I dislike when people use the phrase "Shallow and pedantic" because it was a joke on one episode of Family Guy. It's rarely funny, and often promotes ignorance of the terms, leading to even more improper use of said words.

Some meathead was actually arguing with me that "As long as you know I'm using it negatively, then you get what I'm saying. I can use words however I want." (Not that he said it that well. I just understood him.) You can't use words however you want. If you could then dog bubble gum ostentatious Jupiter.

We're not all that great with words, especially when it comes to describing feelings. Sometimes you'll try to speak your mind but it comes out wrong, and what you end up saying isn't something that you actually believe in. Don't hold people so strictly to things they say in the heat of the moment. Especially don't analyse exact wordings so much. Accept that we're all fallible, and then the upwards lifelong marathon of communication with your loved ones is that little bit easier.
