Not a very interesting intro, as a new fan to the Elder scrolls series and skyrim being the first game I've tried, all the hype bother to get the game what do Bethesda do to introduce this massive world about dragons and a mighty civil war?

A horse carriage and some random elf praying to a few gods which wasn't very convincing, if the voice actors sounded like they were in to it it would have been thrilling, It also takes a while to get to the massive world, I would have preferred it if the dragon came and I could just run away from the village in any direction I like.

Also isn't there an entire Extra Credits video dedicated to the skyrim opening?

Speaking of voice actors and intros. It's hard to top Patrick Stewart.

I hate ridiculously convenient moments in cutscenes, so Skyrim made me cringe when a dragon comes in and saves you as the executioner is literally lifting his axe to take your head off. And don't bring up destiny or prophecies or chosen ones, F all that.

Aside from that I really liked the intro. When the Nord is telling the other guy to die with some dignity I was completely sucked in. It was atmospheric and subtle - there's a conflict going on that you couldn't care less about, you're not even in the right country. Then a dragon attacks and blasts everything, and it really looked like Imperials were trying hard to fight it off. I loved the added touch of the mages lobbing fireballs at it.

Pretty dull opening I thought. Extra Credits had a pretty good analysis of why it wasn't up to par if you can be bothered to look for it.

I think it wouldn't look so bad if 2011 wasn't a year of great openings. Portal 2, Arkham City and Uncharted 3 all had awesome intros.

I think my main problem with it was it didn't do that thing where it asks you if you wanted to change any parts of your character before you left the tutorial section, I always used to use this point in Fallout 3 and Oblivion to save just before I left, so if I wanted to make a new character I wouldn't have to sit though it all again.

It was fine the first time around but then it got very boring.
At least in Oblivion you could play in whatever way you wanted right from the start. In Skyrim you are stuck on rails for who knows how long.

Hmmm, the save I have just before the guy asks who you are must be a custom one then?

Doesn't let me skip the whole intro but it's been pretty damn useful anyway, even if I still don't get why they didn't give us a re-customization option like Oblivion did.

Todd Howard said he was having fun with Oblivion until the customization options came up so my guess is that they minimized the customization as much as they could and then saw no reason to ask if you had changed your mind at the end of the tutorial dungeon.

What they should have considered though is that people used that option in Oblivion as a starting save.

You guys really want to complain about this intro? RPG intros used to be far more monotonous and boring. Skyrim's is a breath of fresh air compared to say, Kotor II... oh god the horror.
THIS! A thousand times this! I don't get why people defend KOTOR 2 so much... "cut content makes it better", blah blah, but it's still paced like ASS! At least Taris had fun activities and interesting visuals instead of "metal corridors, metal corridors, relatively barren fields, and more metal corridors" until Atris gets the plot rolling.

I enjoyed the intro but then again, I've only played through it with one character. I might be singing a different tune when I start some new characters in the near future.

Todd Howard thinks killing rats in a sewer is fun? That explains everything.

I really liked it the first time. However I make a lot of characters so when I am starting a new game I want to be able to skip through most of it and get to playing since I have already done it so many times.
The game autosaves right as you get off the cart. Just keep that save and you'll never have to watch it again.

OT: I thought the intro was cool as hell. I just didn't expect to hear Ralof's voice 8 million times from 200 different faceless guards for the entirety of the game.

It doesn't bug me as much as the intro to morrowind bugs me, seriously I could recite it word for word.

but that might also be because I've only made like 3 characters in skyrim, also if you want to spice up the intro you could grab this mod:

oh yeah!

I liked the intro because it set up such a dire mood. You see straight away that this is a conflicted land in deep sh**. And then the dragon turns up. The only thing that annoyed me a little was how it forces you to make a small decision there and then whether to follow the stormcloak or the imperial. It doesn't appear to affect things much, but still, you've just learned about these factions and you're already forced to pick a side.

I loved the bit where it plays the fast paced dragon music and Hadvar shouts at you "It's you and me prisoner, stay close!"

It is a well done intro.

After seeing the intro 40 times, I do feel we could have a quick start menu sometimes.

Luckily I'm on pc. I have a game save starting from when I'm let loose on the world. If I want to make a new character I open up the console and type "showracemenu" and I get to change my character into whatever I want!

I skipped the cart ride with a save just before character creation. I enjoyed it the first time but 2nd and 3rd character it's still not bad I just want to jump into the game.

You had to remind me of that goddamn intro... Came close to ruining the entire game for me.

OT: I don't mind the intro to Skyrim at all, but I'm not the type to make 15 different characters either.

i think it would have been better if there was a choice to skip to the Character customization and after the dragon attack

It was good the first time. After that I just wanted to create a character and start from outside the cave.

The intro was great, and I don`t think you can judge it because of replayability, anything is bad if you have to do it 20 times and just want to get it over with.
Let's put it this way - people who replay the game clearly like some part of the game content enough to want to experience it again. The intro is not that part of the game content.

In general, I don't get the whole thing Bethesda does with annoying linear sections at the beginning of their game.

: Okay, so our game has minimal story content, but does one thing very well - the ability to explore an open world with very few limitations.
: SOUNDS GOOD LETS START THE GAME WITH A LINEAR UNSKIPPABLE STORY-FOCUSED SCRIPTED SECTION
While they go too far in some cases I think they do this to establish the setting. It would be kind of odd to just plop you in the middle of the game world and tell you to have at it... oh wait... that's pretty much what Morrowind did. Never mind.
Yeah, Morrowind was the best TES opening. Learn how to walk and look by going upstairs. (Easy) Create your character and go.
