The Sniper Principle

This comment comes from a MW2 sniper, who feels he needs to rant about other snipers.

As a sniper, I firmly believe 3 things:

1) One shot, one kill.
2) No camping.
3) NO M*********ING THERMAL SCOPES.

Alluding to my first rule, I run Stopping Power as my Tier 2 Perk. Consequently, I have a thermal signature on the field. This means that I can't walk on any open ground without receiving a headshot from across the map by some wanker who otherwise wouldn't have had any idea I was there, and succeeds in the headshot only by virtue of the fact that my head is the only part of my body that's exposed.

To condense my thoughts, I don't feel sniping breaks an fps. Camping-with-Cold-Blooded-and-a-thermal-scope-and-a-silencer is what breaks a game, simply because the game stops being an fps and becomes one of those God-awful sequences in action/adventure games where the main character is deftly avoiding an "unkillable baddy".

I think the most important role of the sniper gameplay-wise is to add a level of depth to the battlefield. Otherwise it would be a AR centric fuck fest. Same with close quarter classes and mines. Variety.

TF2.

I rest my case.
I very much disagree. Sniping isn't as easy in tf2, and that's good. That being said, in small games (4v4 - 8v8), the difference can be seen between sniper and non. I still can't think of a game that's better because of snipers.
Life?

An enemy Sniper is a problem? Flank them. Get behind/beside them and blow them away. Sometimes it's hard to do if he's in a corner or has someone protecting him, but it works. Plus, with some of them, it takes a while for the message to get through that you know where they like to stay and shoot. I once got 11 kills from a sniper in Combat Arms who kept going to the same place.

If it's that bad of a problem that the game is almost unplayable, just go to a different game.

I usually prefer to play a sniper myself, and I don't even play online all that often. I just prefer it to other styles of play in FPS-games. I'm not doing it for K/D, to ruin anyones game, or because I can't be bothered to do anything else - I do it because to me it is the most fun to be had in an FPS.
And THIS is the true meaning of Sniping

Sniper are absolutely essential to FPS gaming and the class has nothing to do with cowardice.
Sure, snipers take on enemies from a long distance, where they can't be reached, but they can be reached by people they don't see and get stabbed in the back. I'd say that's a pretty strong risk too.
Oh, and if sniping is point and clicking, so is every other weapon, and, at least for snipers there are less pixels.

If someones sniping, go a different way flank them, that doesn't work nood tube them, that doesn't work leave.

My steps to dealing with a sniper:
1.) Switch kit to sniper
2.) counter snipe that mofo
3.) ????
4.) Profit
Yeah but from what I've seen is that folks like to spray and pray. I hardly ever see folks flanking any sniper positions.

If we're talking BC2 then hardcore is unbalanced for snipers. Otherwise if a sniper is getting a lot of kills and topping the board, its because he's a good player. Give him credit.

As for a game that is better for having a sniper in it; TF2?

Camping is not the same as sniping. A good sniper will move around so the enemy doesnt know where he is.
True, I had a long discussion with my friends between Camping and Ambushing/Sniping/Defending which I won't go into here.
A good sniper will stay in a position of superiority until it is compromised or they start drawing fire/ to much enemy attention; they then would move to a different spot.

Some good tactics for countering snipers would be recording their position if they down you, utilizing cover, covering fire, grenades, etc. Flanking, TEAMWORK, paying attention to the whole area as much as possible instead of whats right in front of you, and generally using your head to make smart combat decision.

In short use your head.

This is why I don't play online shooters with classes. Everyone starts with the same weapons at the beginning of the match and the power weapons spawn in central locations to be fought over. That's what I prefer.

I too am a sniper and do it for the simple reason that its more fun for me. If i get counter sniped or if I'm trying to play as other types i usually have fun being sniped by others cause it adds another dimension to the game to account for.

I can only stand snipers in Tf2. There's no silly ''Hide in the bushes'' silliness, just straight up, rag-tag sniping from a person you can locate.

The only reason I dislike snipers is because you have little to no chance of killing/fighting back against the one shooting you, and 9/10 times you'll already be engaged in combat with someone else. Nothing like being shot by a person a mile away.

I don't mind sniper duels though, it's very reserved, quiet, sneaking around and spotting. A battle of wits.

For my convenience this is all coming from a BC2 perspective (most recent multi player FPS I've played)

Snipers are only a problem for those who do not know how to deal with them. People are pissed off because a sniper's primary advantage is surprise, they had no way of knowing they were going to be attacked, and from where. Of course this is for many a lot more annoying than being killed by a dude you could see. Sniper's can also get one shot kills, this being necessary for the class to work effectively (unless you want to give them super accurate automatic weapons).

Beating snipers is easy, you simply need to be familiar with their weaknesses, which are:

1: Their slow cycling weapons have to be aimed very carefully in order to get the kill, there is no spray in the right direction and let the bullets follow them around as in a machine gun. If you move in irregular patterns between cover, 90% of snipers won't be able to hit you. Do this all the time and you have a defence against being caught by surprise.

2: They have poor situational awareness thanks to scopes, if you know where they are and you are not a n00b, you can kill them without them knowing a thing.

I think the real reason people hate snipers is because they see their strengths alone, and do not take into consideration their weaknesses. Unlike other classes, the sniper is very specialised. Yes they may be stupidly awesome at ranged combat, but they suck at everything else.

Now kids, have fun, and if you get killed by a dude wearing leaves just be a good sport and kill him right back.

I once played a round of Hardcore: HQ in MW2, and everyone including myself, chose a sniper class, picked a spot on the map, and no one moved until there were 30's left on the map. I lol'd.

All in all, just tell your friend to stand behind a friend, let a friend get shot, track the shot, and then cap the ***** like he did your friend.

I only really play TF2, and there, in my opinion, I see them as the only class that could be removed without a terrible whack to balance. Perhaps make medics a little strong, but nothing major.
The general thought to me is....what is the primrary target of a sniper? Another sniper. They exist to counter themselves. Yes, they help with engineers. So does a spy. Anyway, I largely play on a doublecross server as my friends are obsessed with it, so I am without doubt a bit biased.
Oh, and of course, the thousands of snipers on my team who watch the intelligence slowly drift away, then proceed to continue shooting the other snipers....
Though they are a bit bothersome due everyone elses weapons having reduced damage from afar.
Bah. Anyway, I would prefer to avoid arguing about this because I have done so many times before with friends. But if I am really that objectionable, go ahead. I will likely concur and we can all get on with our lives.
In retrospect, I do not mind them that much. It just bothers me a little, due to the general tendency for them to be on my team and be bad. Not to mention, if I even think about trying it, at least three other dolts immediatly switch, generally followed be the death of our team.
Hmmm. They have upsides, and downsides. In general, I just find them bothersome, not imbalancing.

I love Bad Company 2 and I only play sniper. Cry moar b****es, I'll enjoy the game how I want to. You choose whether to play it.

As for CoD, I play any and every combination of weapons but find sniping too impractical. I don't whinge when someone snipes me.

i've played a sniper for many years...if you want a challenging game to snipe on, for those of you here who play snipers, try Starseige:Tribes...its an OLD game but there is no point and click and your opponent goes down, you laugh and move to a new spot...ohhhh nooo you have to actually lead your target based on speed and direction they are traveling

tribes is one of the games that made snipers great cause it actually took skill to kill and finding those light armor bastages were tough when you had HUGE maps and yes they made the game challeging and fun...try it sometime

Most snipers i've run into always went to the one spot forever and then returned there after they die. It's not hard to flank and kill snipers. Just stay out of their line of fire and you're fine.

I love playing as a sniper. Warfare should be clean simple and methodical and it suits my play style just fine.
raging about snipers is just silly. I mean, there is more justified hate towards grenades and explosives than a guy with a single shot rifle with a bolt that takes 2 seconds to rearm.

I was discussing multiplayer with one of my friends lately and he kinda went into a tirade about how he despises snipers in any game and considers them "A disgusting mix of Hitler, Satan, and Fred Phelps". I don't remember the whole thing but I do remember his Sniper Principle. I don't know if this has been said before but I thought I'd share it.

The Sniper Principle goes as follows:
1. The odds of having fun in multiplayer is indirectly proportional to the number of snipers on the map.
2. If a sniper can ruin a good match he will make every attempt to do so.
3. Any class given a sniper rifle, motion sensor, and mortar strike shouldn't be called the "Recon" class. Just rename it the "God" class and be done with it. (He said it only applies to BC2)

I thought this was funny, but couldn't decide wether he was right, so I just wanted to hear what other people think about it.
BC2 has the worst sniper balencing ive ever seen in my entire life. IM at a loss to explain how they managed to make it so OP. They have c4 that can one hit tanks. They can call in a morter strike on defending positions. They can one hit kill with magnum ammo from accross the map. Motion sensor also makes their job so much easier.
