The Unobtrusive Thread for Firefly and Stargate MMOs

We all know that Stargate Worlds is coming out next year and every fanboy will be time-jumping for joy (me included) for the chance to kick some alien butt, but what about Firefly.

Whoever said theres no honor among thieves has never watched Firefly, it's funny and engrossing and makes you want to murder the fox execs for killing it. I have been waiting for this Firefly MMO for so long, I've actually figured out what my characters name is going to be and so fourth. More planning than I did than for the release of Guild Wars 2. I want to see this Firefly MMO at least have a trailer or something out soon, something to sate my thirst for more Firefly besides watching with all my friends on weekends.

I'm an MMO fan but I see there is so future for the MMO besides the gold encrusted untouchable thorne that is World of Warcraft, which begs the question. Why not World of Starcraft. Starcraft was better by a thousandfold than Warcraft, even Diablo beat Warcraft. Is there any way we can let World of Warcraft die in peace or does the gaming industry have to throttle it to death? My point being, where is my Firefly MMO and who here shares my views?

Review in short

1. Who wants to buy Stargate Worlds
2. Who would want to buy an MMO set in the Firefly universe
3. Is it possible to ever destroy the WoW throne

Questions, Comments, Think I'm a dork, post here

The Firefly MMO was announced in December 2006... And little else has been mentioned about it. I'm sorry, but I've got to put it into the vapourware category.

As for Stargate... Well, people at this forum already think I'm weird for being a Mac user. I'm not going to give them any more reason to flame me.

The only thing that happened on the Firefly front is that some company announced they had purchased the rights. Nothing beyond that. There is a Firefly pen-and-paper game, but it's rare and I've never gotten to actually play it. I'd bust out the dice for that, though.

The only problem with the Firefly MMO, is because that means Fox owns the rights to the show as well... and thus Joss Whedon will never make any more movies or shows connected.

I'd like a Firefly game that WASN'T an MMO. Seriously, it'd be great fodder for a cinematic gaming experience, but how the heck to you capture the essence with grind quests and text that, in all honesty, I'm just going to skip over. Grab the cast, work some mocap, and use Serenity as the hub for a great single-player game, but don't kill it with the MMO kiss of death. That just cheapens it.
I agree, Id love a Srargate and Firefly game but MMO's?

Why? Just Why?

Not terribly excited about the Starget MMO, but I would buy a Firefly MMO in a heartbeat. I doubt you will "destroy" WoW, it will eventually get some serious competition and slowly slip away, maybe a year from now, maybe 5 who knows.

Why does a MMO have to be like all the other MMO. Does it have to be a MMORPG? Why not a MMO space combat sim? With some storytelling, make planetside more a FPS. Keep the whole exp and leveling and take away the pointless clicking. I'd play that.

Well, I suppose grinding would have to be more intrinsic, bearing little resemblance to the WoW "Do This Dungeon Seven More Times To Get The Full Set!" or the Runescape "You Literally Never Stop Fishing." Maybe for space combat they could take some tips from EVE.

I like the idea of planetside being an FPS. With random pricks, yeah. And not just all these bogons roaming space, there'll be academics and breathtaking core worlds and...

Only problem I'd see with a Firefly MMO is with everyone wanting to be Captain Mal.
Not so, Wash is far funnier, and the agent in the film is my favourite villain ever. Imagine being a Companion.

I'm having a lot of trouble stomaching the idea of a Stargate MMO really working. I haven't done the research and refuse to do it now, but what era is this set in? Are the Asgard still around or are humans officially "the fifth race"? What stories are they going to be telling, exactly?

I'm foreseeing this terrible thing where the MMO "world" consists of the base, and then you get a group together and gate out to a "world" which is the SG equivalent of a WoW instance.

Fun?

Firefly is best suited as an MMO... As of Wash's death in Serenity, I don't figure on there ever being a revival of the series, but if the MMO does well, they might start up another series in the same 'Verse.

For those who don't know it, the Firefly MMO will not be centered around Serenity or her crew, and you will not be able to play as any of the show's characters.
They could if they said the movie was non-canon. That'd make sense, too.

It won't be centred around the main characters, but that won't stop the douchebags of the Internet from making a complete Mal look-alike, except their name will be something like 'mal_is_gay1123.' The horror.

I love Firefly. It's a neat little series that wasn't really given a chance. But at the same time, I am skeptical of the idea of an MMO. The problem is that the IP wasn't given a chance to expand, which makes an MMO that needs to fill int he blanks - and at that point, is it really Firefly? I'd have to agree with another poster who said they'd rather see a Firefly game that wasn't an MMO.

As far Stargate, that has a richer IP to draw upon. If the development is good, I can see that becoming somewhat popular.

I fear the roleplayers that will live out their fanfiction fantasies more.

Overall, I just don't think the Firefly universe is rich enough to support an MMO. Not that it wouldn't be cool. Fly out into the black, defend your ship from Reavers, side with the Alliance or go independent.

Overall I think a single-player game with online/local co-op would just work better. Maybe episodic?

Yess. Although it would obviously be hard to capture the original essence of Firefly, if they could pull it off I would be truly impressed. I'm not a big fan of MMOs, but if the MMO would be better than the RPG, I would definitely go with that. Regardless, Firefly would be a great show to make a game out of, and I can't think of a better sci fi show to do it with. However, because of the fact that it was cancelled, I doubt that Fox would see any benefits in making a game for a show that they cancelled, especially because they probably think we've all lost interest. I think it would be great fun though, and there are definitely enough crazy fans still out there to make good money off the game.
