how is the wii selling so well with bad online, bad 3rd party support and a software drought?

i know the 1st party contributions are amazing and the VC is a great start but damn i cant decide if i should just save up for a PS3 or buy a wii, if i can find one
I don't get whats so bad about the friend codes, honestly. I can only play with my friends/people I know? Big deal. They're the only people I'm interested in playing a game with anyway. Maybe thats just me, but the Wii's online doesn't bother me in the least. XBox Live bothers me more because of the fee, but on the other hand its not like its that much. A year of XBox Live for around the price of a single game doesn't sound too bad.

And whether or not you get a PS3 or a Wii should depend on what games you're more interested in, rather than the console itself. Looking across the three current gen systems the least exclusive titles, or titles that are better on that system, still has 8 games that catch my interest and possibly more further down the road. Enough, in my opinion, for me to justify getting all three eventually. I didn't factor in the XBLA/VC/PSN either.

Personally, I feel the Wii has untapped potential and could be a good platform for console-based RTS games. Would love for the chance to test that theory. Does seem like other developers that ignored the Wii in favor of the PS3 and XBox 360 are starting to take notice, though.

I think the Wii still has potential, but there are to many crappy kids games on it. That has been Nintendos problem since the gamecube. Im still overjoyed about Pikmin 3 though!
The Pikmin that was announced at E3 wasnt an original game it is a port of the original Gamecube Version, part of Nintendo's new "Enjoy on Wii" Campaign where rather than make new entries in their old franchises they are Shoe-horning in (most likely) half-assed motion controls.

This, in addition to the complete flood of crap games on the shelves leads me to beleive that Nintendo have lost the plot completely.

So without good, original 3rd party support (House of the Dead Overkill, MadWorld, Deadly Creatures) for example because now nintendo have lost it.

if it keeps up at this rate the wii's story will be a bigger, more rapid version of what has happened to Sonic Team
PIkmin one and two are being ported, But Pikmin 3 was confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto.

Everyone should watch this, AND his other videos.

The toy explanation stars around 6:20.
That man just spoke truths that nobody seems to want to recognize.

Amazing thoughts and great central comparison...

People do seem to forget that video games are toys... it's a shame...

The saddest thing is that no matter what happens, the Wii will always outsell the consoles that any gamer actually cares about, therefore all the decent game developers will just say, "fuck it, let's make casual Wii games, because they'll sell".

I hate Nintendo.

Why does everybody keep saying that?

the only thing the wii lacks is replayability in form of online play.

I hate to get marked as wii fanboy here, but the wii needs a little defense here and there
It's really no more than a toy. I wish I could say otherwise but I find no 'games' in it, just terribly made motion sensor gimmmicks.

The Wii is getting help from lots of pple, e.g. EA have re-written Dead Space and are porting it to the Wii, but this probably is a bad idea for putting a gruesome horror game on a family console (*cough* toy). The reason that the Wii is reguarded as a toy is cause it's shitty graphics output means it is best for dishing out games with TF2 animation (TF2 is awesome btw), but if that's the best it can do then how Nintendo expect anyone to take it seriously?

What people have to understand is the Wii is not meant to be a "serious" gaming console with games that are filled with "HOLY SHIT AWZUM" graphics and people who explode into blood clouds. Its targeted as a family console so everyone could have fun doing Wii sports and all the crap, and it is also for people who can't figure out that the Wii is a game console. The Wii is more of a "training" console so when people grow up or learn about consoles, they go to the hardcore stuff.

Thats a bit of a blanket statement isn't it? Colin McRae Dirt is one of the finest racing games of this generation, and possibly the best off-roader since Sega Rally Championship. Grid too is a fine game.

Oh what does it f***ing matter? It has sold more consoles than either the 360 or PS3. It's here and it's not going anywhere. You can either start encouraging it to get better or you can keep continuing the cycle of crap games by never praising the ones that try to break out of the mold.

There is no way to change the stupid games coming out for it except to buy the ones that aren't casual crap.

You name two average racing series (this gen). Generally Codemasters don't make AAA games.

I hate to break it to you, but every gaming system is a toy.

Seriously, people need to stop pretending that they're not
Well I use my 360 for games, playing my music (Most of my CDs are ripped to it), as a DVD player, and as a way to stream media off my PC. So I'd say it's practically the center-piece for my media.

I bet PS3 owners could say similar things, especially with the Blue-Ray player added into that mix.

More then a toy.
Even with all those extras, it's key feature is to play games. At its very base, it is a toy.
Well, Chess is quite obviously a toy.

Poker is quite obviously a toy

Get it yet?

About time we got some more Bob love around here. He got his Escapist Oscar show on here, maybe he can get some overthinker episodes on here even if they are a bit 'low-tech' (for a lack of a better term).

Plus other companies started a trend already, namely Headstrong games, High voltage Software, Rockstar, and so on and so forth.

The Wii, like others have said, has untapped potential. The people who went to the wii saw that potential in the play scheme, making fps and the like more appealing.

Hell if it can make real time tactics games work on the Wii (i.e. Battalion Wars 2) then I am pretty confident on that theory.

Wii owners HAVE been doing that, though. Possibly moreso than other console owners. 13% of the games available for the Wii make up 80% of sales. The average is generally 20% of a system's library makes up for 80% of game sales. So Wii owners, statistically, are actually pickier about what games they get and buying very little shovelware despite how much of it there is. Its going to continue to get shovelware despite this, though, simply for being the most bought console and easiest to develop for. So its very easy for developers to get back the development costs in spite of low sales numbers.

Those statistics are from an article on kotaku.

All games and game systems are Toys, so all that really seems like is flame-bait.

-and what is the Wii fighting back against?! It's kicking everyone's ass...

Looks like there is hope for the Wii yet:

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=209729

It's like they were saying what all wii owners were thinking but too afraid to admit in public -- at least for me! Personally I think the wii's been getting a real bad reputation as a system only good for shovelware, though there are a few good games here and there, they're like shiny gems lost in a sea of dark, black sewage. I really hope this means that Codemasters are starting a trend, where companies will follow their example and start producing quality products, instead of the usual ports of other games...

Agree or Disagree, tell what you think (just try to keep the flaming to a minimum).
What do you mean there is hope for the Wii? It's the most successful console of this generation, whether you like the games or not. Don't give your biased view and try to pass it off as the general opinion. There are loads of good games out there for the Wii, most of them are just not often heard of.

Right...I was arguing to just keep doing that though. After all,
