Also the Arad sign only does a small blast of wind that only affects one person while in the first one it would effect multiple enemies. Also whats up with not being able to drink potions if your not meditating? That is were I think the game has failed. Its stupid that you have to meditate in order to pull a potion out of your pocket and drink it. All in all so far its a pretty good game.
Once you upgrade Aard it becomes an area affect, which can give you some small breathing room against groups of enemies.
Totally agree with you on the potions thing, how hard is it to drink a potion without going into a meditative trance?!!

I've been playing a bit of it myself. Just a bit though, barely level 8 now. So far...
I've gotten frustrated with the combat system on multiple occasions. 1 enemy is piss easy, 2 enemies are frustrating, 3 are incredibly hard. What am I supposed to do, run away? Once you're at low health there's little to do other than running around like a headless chicken spamming Quen (or whatever that armor spell is) and waiting for Swallow to take effect.
Pretty much against multiple opponents, until you've levelled up you do need to do lots of running away, use Quen (shield) and hack down one enemy before they overcome your shield or keep sniping them with Aard (wind blast) until you stun one and then hit him for an insta-kill.
Better yet, when you come up against a group of three chuck a bomb or two at them! Don't be stingy with your bombs.

The blocking mechanic is fucking stupid. I can only block 2 hits (3 with a talent) so if there's more than 1 enemy constantly wailing on me, goodbye defense. Dodging is slow as fuck and prone to free hits, too.
I found dodging to be very effective, but they do sometimes catch you while you're rolling, there's an upgrade in swordsman which makes rolling faster you may like. Also make sure you're double tapping the WASD keys rather than pressing space bar to roll.

I'm also having trouble figuring stuff out. Will I ever need these crafting ingredients I seem to be full of? Are these crafting recipes any good? How exactly am I supposed to engage enemies? How the hell do I counter attacks? WILL SOMEONE REMIND ME HOW TO PLAY THE STUPID DICE GAME?
You probably won't need the crafting ingredients unless you want to rely on traps. Weapons and armour found in-game tend to be as good or better than those you can craft, but if you're good at collecting items you can craft the stuff sooner.
Countering is done by holding down block (remember you can only block if you have vigour points left and haven't spent them all on spells), aim your cursor at the enemy you want to counter. At one point during their attack the dot cursor will change to a sword, that's when you click attack.
I found this only worthwhile once I'd spent time upgrading it but it was then very useful for killing groups of human enemies.
I hate the dice game and didn't bother with it, but it's similar to real life poker, though rubbish by comparison. Your opponent may raise the stakes and you choose to give in or match their bet, left button is give in (a bug sometimes causes the buttons to not show what they mean), right button matches their bet.
Then you roll, just by holding the mouse button down, flicking the dice and letting go.
Compare your hand to the opponents, you want to get pairs of numbers or a run, I'd check the manual for the actual hands you can get as they don't quite match real life poker.
You then click on dice you want to re-roll to improve your hand.
Honestly, it's a shit minigame, I'd not bother with it at all.
