I love Gamefaqs. I remember on the COD4 board, this one bloke called HeavenlyAxe basically called out the entire board to a series of 1v1's and won every single one. This went on for WaW and I think most of MW2 before he got bored. A true hero.

To be fair, there were (I don't know about are) only a couple of people who would invoke Cosmo's name frequently, and largely to harass a lurker (Cosmo himself). It's usually they themselves trolling in the process. Which probably would have bored me with the board if I hadn't lost all my RPG stuff in a fire anyway.
Here's the problem I see with the term 'trolling' and just the whole troll phenomenon overall: It's really misnamed.
The true signs I see of the thing is that a troll is either an annoying thing or person with the express purpose of just doing that, there to irritate you. There's a problem with this, though. The idea is mistakenly based upon the idea that trolls (like from fantasy) are meant to be just annoying. That IS where people are taking this, from the fantasy troll.
But you give these guys and the theme itself way too much credit. They don't HAVE power. They're just being pains in the ass, and idiots. They're pathetic. You know...like goblins. I'm aware that changing the name isn't going to catch on, but everyone who says trolling this and trolling that just has the wrong mindset for this.

Trolling means tricking someone into rage or confusion. The two best examples are 1) writing a large block of opinionated text with several minor wrong facts or 2) setting up a scenario where you get trolled

Actually, no you are wrong in that. The term "troll" comes from "trawl". Because they are "trawling" - fishing for attention (alternatively - fishing for conflict, confrontation, or something similar. It's usually attentin, though in one form or another). I don't know how, when or why it started being spelled "troll" but I can assume it was either somebody stupid of a troll that did it first. At any rate, they have really little in common with fantasy tolls.FalloutJack said:

An interesting bit of information, but...fishing?! It's a matter of fact that I am experienced at fishing and have indeed trawled in lakes and the sea. (We've got like...three little fishing boats.) If you ARE being serious, which I have to question here, I don't see how one leads to that. Maybe in the 'leading them along' aspect, but the aggravation isn't the endgame but rather something the fisher can suffer when the line gets accidentally jammed in the motor or stuck in a log. Interesting, but...I don't see it. If the point here is that it's NOT logical, I may have to concede the discussion to you.DoPo said:
