Ahh, I see what you did there. This post wins the thread.

An interesting bit of information, but...fishing?! It's a matter of fact that I am experienced at fishing and have indeed trawled in lakes and the sea. (We've got like...three little fishing boats.) If you ARE being serious, which I have to question here, I don't see how one leads to that. Maybe in the 'leading them along' aspect, but the aggravation isn't the endgame but rather something the fisher can suffer when the line gets accidentally jammed in the motor or stuck in a log. Interesting, but...I don't see it. If the point here is that it's NOT logical, I may have to concede the discussion to you.
Indeed, I am serious...but I can see, why you question it - it is a topic about trolling after all and people are joking a lot here. And you were right to question me - I did make a mistake - it wasn't "trawling", I was confusing that with...well, "trolling" - the actual fishing technique I was thinking about. I hope you'll excuse me for that.

So yeah - they are fishing for attention by luring people with their bait (their post). The attention need not necessarily fall on them but if nobody notices their posts, they can do little damage, so their post must be tailored to make as many people want to read it and to be led by it (whether they believe it or oppose it is irrelevant).

Over the years, internet trolling has changed it's focus and methods, so it's a bit muddled now, however it's still not about fantasy creatures. Fundamentally, it's about gathering the attention of the public and manipulating them using that. Manipulate them for a malicious end (big or small) that is. The usual association with the fantasy troll comes first from the word itself - it is the same and it's easy to miss the fishing term...like I did before (I was under the impression that "trawling" was the only fishing term I didn't know it had a homophone). Second it's the phrase "do not feed the troll" - I don't know when about it was coined but it's pretty popular, so people hearing it can immediately think of an actual troll, if they had doubts before. But once "trolling" is associated with the fantasy creature, some more further associations can easily be made - tolls hide under bridges and erm, are bad and stuff, sort of like internet trolls who hide before striking...and are bad and stuff. Also, trolls die really hard (more of a D&D thing, maybe), as do internet trolls. But that is where "do not feed the troll" comes - do not give them any attention and they (usually) move on.

You people here are the worst trolls because you have no fucking clue how to troll nor how to react to trolling

this thread shows this very clearly.

Oh, be quiet. If your great contribution here was to complain, then don't do us any favors. That kind of comment is out of line, and you will now leave, without a fuss.

Where was I? Oh right. The trolling thing. I see where you're coming from, and it sounds to me that exactly the problem is that the explanation is sort of "What the sense make?". That is, the trollish wonders are all following a doctrine which has no reason other than 'stupid is as stupid does'. But then, there is a thing I should point out. There are those who are just too dumb to leave. I'm not kidding. Because now I move onto...the cockroach analogy. We don't live with cockroaches. We don't like them. We have professionals who kill them. Metaphorically speaking, the same is what we do for the annoying crowd. And you can't say impossible, because you don't live with cockroaches. Can be done, has been done, and...tends to be satisfying. No, trust me. I personally helped launch some from this site. The other half of the team is our lovely mods.

You have made my night. That was brilliantly funny in its simplicity.

Please, have a slice of internet for that one.

I agree, but we are moving away from my original point, which was that term internet trolling does not come from the fantasy creature, but from fishing. That was the whole thing I wanted to say. Over the years it was replaced in the public mind by the actual fantasy trolls, which is justified.

Trolls are not immortal of course, nor are they that big of a problem when handled correctly. That's why we have the saying "don't feed the troll" and that's why the Escapist's policy is "Report and move on". Other sites usually have variations of that.

I don't feel it's justified, but I do take your point.

I've seem Cosmetor mentioned enough, also I've been on GameFAQs enough, to guess what he was doing. And it's probably not much different to how the guy in the OP operated.
Actually, I've read what the guy cited in the first post said, and he was far more dickish than Cosmo ever was. Cosmo was a self-righteous fool who misused words and got his own personal feelings hurt for the wrong reasons. I called him a troll at first, too. The problem is, while Streetfighterwhatevernumber is intentionally be dismissive, Cosmetor seemed to jump into things in good faith. That is, he was wrong, but he seemed to actually believe it. He'd get pissed off at what he perveived to be "racism," misusing the word, or "hate speech," often misusing the word. He'd get locked into poor word choices and then flamed to Hell by Dragoon Andrew and....I forget his name, but the dude who's obsessed with lolis and posts about his blog in virtually every thread.

In retrospect, I feel bad for Cosmo, someone who pissed me off as much as a lot of the other posters on there, but calling him a troll, or even comparing him to the dude the OP is about, it seems to do him intentionally the same kind of disservice I once did accidentally.

Honestly, there's a reason that Dragoon Andrew was modded every couple of weeks and Cosmo wasn't. Cosmetor wasn't the troll or the bully. He was just on the wrong side of the popularity curve. And I was guilty of this myself. I'm not saying I was without blame (Though I managed to avoid moderation on GameFAQs, so I must have done SOMETHING different). But still.

Oh, that was cruel. Once you've taken away the "gay" card, you've taken away half their vocabulary!

I would nominate myself for Worst troll ever.
I once trolled people here on the escapist in a thread "your most controversial opinion", while drunk.

I'm far from proud of it, especially considering how I trolled, and I didn't mean what I said.
It was just to fuck with people, and you loose some restrictions when drinking.

I'm putting the link here, not proud of it, you can see that I'm drinking because of the constant misspelling and bad grammar, so please take it with a grain of salt (and remember I was purposely trolling, these aren't my personal opinions)

Ah Gamefaqs. Five to seven years ago you were ok. Now everytime I go on there I feel sick. Thankfully its been a month since I've last been there. The Escapist forums have helped me overcome. Thank God for these forums.

Ah, I see. I've never got an explanation about Cosmetor but I can see how one can be labelled a troll if they hold an unpopular opinion. Especially, easy on good ol' P+P. But there is trolling and there is just being, well, stupid or wrong. It sounds as if Cosmo was one of the latter.

Well, thanks for the explanation, it makes things clearer now. Also, you're thinking about Squirrel In My Pants.
