Tomb Raider, the first one. I thought it all felt like the female adventures of Indiana Jones without the whip. The game generally irritated me and if the plot had been better I would have felt more incline to keep playing it at a constant rate.

I thought it was pretty easy to figure out, although i haven't played 4 yet :( no PS3, I really hope hideo realizes he'll get a bigger (albeit less mature) audience if he remakes 4 MGS4 for the 360.

Anyway, im pretty sure the worst storyline i've heard was Ninja Gaiden. Its a good game but i had to switch the voices to japanese they were so bad

Gonna say MGS, if you need to go on gamefaqs to understand the plot then its not worth knowing.

HMMMM, Final fantasy 10, I don't think the story would've sucked if it was less drawn out, infact I would've loved the story if the parts that were flaming piles of ass were skippable. I thouroughly enjoyed the first seumor fight and the fight against tidus's dad because of the narrative, even though Seumour was cheap and tidus's dad was just overpowered. But the other summoner who kept on fighting yuna and always had one less summon than her.........no. It would of been a guilty pleasure if the game wasn't turn based that I'd never admit due to the story. The scene where she kisses tidus needed to be skippable or just not exist. That's just sad, an ability to skip cutscenes would make me appreciate the story more. And the way X-2 sounds, NO!! Any game with singing in the story AND the combat for any reason other than satire can only be considered average, and that's if every other part is perfect. The combat still being turn-based makes it a bad game right off the bat. X-2 sucks more but it's an expansion of X..................... I guess I'll just say X-2.

Rant Alert!: I can rant, on the internet!

Crackdown: A futuristic world where ultra-powerful crime syndicates control everything. Your character is the generic mute, musclebound, bullet-sponge who can do the work of an army in half the time. However, you are shown as a superbeing pumped full of experimental drugs by a group called the Agency and you work for them, you wander the land beating up random criminals until you find one of their higher-ups and go through an immensely long fight through a billion gunmen before you kill the higher-up, you do this the entire game, and there are three whole crime syndicates you need to cut your way through.

Gears of War: Honestly had some of the most potential for an involving story I have seen in some time. They had a post-apocalyptic setting in a world called Serra in which humans struggle to defeat the locust horde that is attacking them for some random reason. The game's characters are pretty cliche: the wisecracker (Baird), the gruff, emotionless soldier (Marcus), the friend(Dominic) , the tough guy (Cole), and the short-lived perky character. the parade is topped off by Sergeant Hoffman, the loud and bellowing drill sergeant. The potential for a deep and emotional storyline occasionally rears it's head via a well-written cutscene or the devastated landscapes of cities. The story was largely ignored in favor of testosterone-spewing men who wore full suits of metal armor but didn't bother with helmets talking randomly about unpaid bets on sports matches.

Halo 3: Halo is widely accclaimed by many to be the very height of FPS perfection, rarely does a story from an FPS receive any acclaim, some are happy just to try and fight against the 24/7 Halo veterans in online matches, not everyone notices the story, which, in today's games, has become a necessity that is sometimes ignored in favor of other things, don't get me wrong, Halo is fun and exciting and even better when you're shooting your friends out of the sky with a laser. My problem with the story is the sheer schizophrenic feel it has. While the levels in the flood-controlled ship were an obvious attempt at horror, it was hugely offset by the knowledge that your character was an ultra-powerful god-being. Then of course you got to lose all the sense of horror and tension when you see grunts running around like chickens with their heads cut off, screaming stupid things that were obviously meant to distract the player while the real enemies slipped around his back and blew his brains out the side of his head.

On Oblivion:
It's a bit funny really, but the factions you could join, had far more interesting and well told stories, than the main quest. The point during the quest were you need to close some of the gates, threatening the major cities, is basicly just a few hours of repetitive grinding, through almost identical oblivion planes. After that is it gets a little better, but still leaves you thinking, meh. But especially The Dark Brotherhood was great, great NPC's with lots og personality, interesting quests (Especially the downright briliant Whodunit? quest), and a very decent storyline.

The reason why the main plot was so uninteresting, was probably because it was trying to hard to be EPIC, unlike the more subtle but far better faction plots (the arena being an exeption).

Seems almost every future shooter seems to go 'you human good guy, everyone else bad, go shoot'

As for Katamari Damaci, its got a NUTS plot, but not a bad one as such I think, its meant to be fun :D

I think the story wasn't supposed to be any more than generic. The story is supposed to be generic. It was in my opinion, made for the "I eat lions appeal" One of the only games that should have the brown tint. GTA4 being the only other one and that's if the creators wanted this one to feel dark.

Daikatana wasn't a game, it was an affront to God and you should feel bad for even suggesting that..

what no one has said Super Smash Bros. Brawl? I mean come on, what in the world was going on during the subspace emissary? I mean it made no sense, but i suppose it was only there to allow all the characters to team up.
I think that is because it doesn't even count as a story but as an excuse to make you busy enough so you don't realize it's on-line multiplayer it's broken up.

any mario game that the princess is kidnapped and you have to save her.
oh and armored core nine breaker, It's story is basically hey you have to kill mechs to go up in some top mech fighter list.

I agree with what you say and find that to be sad, a game shouldn't sacrifice it's story as much as GoW did, no matter how good the gameplay. However, I hear that they are planning to focus on the story in the second one, a shot at redemption in my book.

I usually say Final Fantasy in threads like this but recently I got crisis core and its pretty/fun enough to soothe my hate.

Now on the other hand I can't say the same for Metal Gear Portable Ops. I don't like soap operas.
