There's no immersion in 3rd person games

I can't play 3rd person, its too annoying, I like to see through the eyes of the character.
I've tried Mass Effect and Dead Space amongst others, and I just can't get into them. If your in a space ship or vehicle its ok, but there is no immersion playing in 3rd person.

The best are games which you can switch between the two but don't have to play as one.

Point of view shouldn't affect immersion. If a game is immersive, then it is. I lost track of everything while play Final Fantasy VII, I get so immersed. It shouldn't matter how you see the game, just how much it can draw you in.

P.S: Immersion, immersion, immersion (just to say it a few more times).

Yeah, I got immersed in another FF game (FF12, put the pitchforks down please) Even though it is 3rd person I was still immersed. The story line was more political, but I liked it, none of this "massive monster ruining the world" stuff.

In my opinion the reason TPS games suck is because they are in third person, which is horrible for shooting.

Are there even TPS games? Most of the shooters in 3rd person is just called TPP Shooter. Because TPP games are great. Jade Empire, Beyond Good and Evil, every single RPG and platform game out there.

Also, Gears of War would truly suck if they were in FPP.

the game i last got immersed in was Silent Hill: Homecoming. then on the flip side, the F.E.A.R 2 demo was also immersive.

now in my opinion, FPS aren't immersive what so ever...for the most part. and that's mainly because of over simplistic game play and almost a complete lack of story and personality. seeing through the character's eyes just isn't enough to personally draw me into the game

Story is what immerses me into a game. I was completely immersed in Resident Evil 4, a third person perspective shooter. I would get nervous and twitchy with the trigger. By the end of a game session, my palms were often shaking and too sweaty to hold the controller any longer. Yet I got almost no immersion out of Call of Duty.

Perspective doesn't affect wether or not a game is immersive.
Look at movies for instance, a very low number of them are shot in first person, yet many of them still have an immersive atmosphere and story.

I found Splinter Cell and Chaos Theory to be both rather immersive.

Even turn based 2D isometric games can be immersive. It's all to do with the game play, level design, and storyline. Fallout series and Planescape naturally comes to mind.
