Thief 4 is finally being made. Thief: Deadly Shadows had the best camera angle controls of ANY game I have ever played! But I have to wonder if they will stay with the mission based game style or open it back up to a more sandbox feel (as I've been told the first 2 were more like).

And we've seen the Hammerites gain too much control, and what happens when magic gets the upper hand. Any thoughts as to what will be the central theme in this one? Continued conflicts with the Hammerites and the Pagans? More of the zombies and the old asylum? Or do you think they will go a different direction and explore the dark secrets of the Great Houses? Plenty of potential there for a political uprising that factionalizes the city!

I always hated the supernatural aspect of the games.
I loved Thief the Dark project, but only the levels where I wasn't fighting some stupid creature or zombie or something.
Give me people! With cool gadgets, tough patrols, and better AI! Stop with the mystic crap!
For once can we have a medieval stealth game that doesn't fall back on supernatural crap?
I'm looking at YOU Assassin's Creed and Thief games!
Sheesh! I hope they do that here.

I don't think Assassin's Creed was exactly "supernatural".

Did you play until the end?
Supernatural. And, uh...spoilers.

Also, the machine thing was stupid too. Totally unnecessary.
I mean, it worked and everything, but they didn't need it.

Developers are just over-thinking this genre! And it's annoying.

It was a machine, built by some secret organization/company to see a person's ancestor's memories.

"not existing in nature or subject to explanation according to natural laws; not physical or material; "supernatural forces and occurrences and ..."

Looking at the definition, it doesn't seem like Animus is a very supernatural thing.
Also, the markings on the wall at the end of Assassin's Creed, I can agree with that. It's supposed to be an ancient civilization, but how could've they written that on the walls of a building so new?

The concept art revealed a while back showed modern character designs and environments, so big cities and grappling hooks may be the way to go.

I wasn't originally referring to the Animus, but the 'Piece of Eden' artifact.
You know, the entire final 'boss fight' thing?

Hence why I said in my second post: 'The machine thing (Animus) was stupid too)'.

Oh, yeah, the Piece of Eden.
I forgot about that.

This. Except the zombies stay. The Shalebridge Cradle is possibly my favorite level ever.
And if the game were to get a more sandbox-ish feel that would kick ass. You should be able to lockpick and enter almost every house. Garrett is a thief, after all... Not Robin Hood. Perhaps being able to upgrade and/or buy new weapons/armor so you actually get some use out of the stuff you loot?

Wait... Am I just discribing Oblivion with better stealth?
Either way, I'm looking forward to it. Loved Deadly Shadows and Metal Age, so I'm sure I'll love this one too.

From all the thought they put into unveiling Th4if, I expect misspelled attempts at leet-speak.

Honestly, Thaif?

I really am interested in this franchise, though i have never played any of them. Any suggestions on where to start? I'm guessing deadly shadows? Was that the most recent one?

I concur, I was really against the fact that magic just cropped up in the game. Thief always had a sort of realism too it, disbelief suspended for a while but when the zombies showed, baah.
I found the hammerites to be far more challenging than any of the other stuff in that game, fuck the monsters in the dark, I'm scared of the people with the beliefs and hammers!

I understand getting rid of the undead (I mean what good is a thief if he's fighting something he can't back stab) but you can't get rid of all the magic and stuff, half the arrows work because they're magical, what would you do without water and moss arrows?
Use wooden ones with an iron tip?
I'm just saying things, I have yet to cross paths with a Thief game.

I've played all three Thief games, and I have to concur with most of the posters: cut the supernatural crap!

In my opninion, a heavily factionized game (Keepers, Hammerites, Pagans, the Houses etc), could be interesting combined with a sandbox world. In Deadly Shadows there was a little reputation bit, where it was desided wether or not people from the different factions would kill you on sight or leave you alone. If this were to be expanded and improved, it could turn out to be pretty sweet game.

That would be cool.
Even better would be, to have a Oblivion style main story, with faction quests on the side. (I'm one of those schmuks, who bought Oblivion and thought: "Sneak, sneak, SNEAK!")
They could even implement the hate between the factions, by making your rep with one faction fall, as it rises with their enemies.

but if you use ones with iron tips you could hurt someone.
Then again if you use fire arrows you could set someone alight now couldnt you?

Anyway, its another Theif. Of what I played of Deadly Shadows I really liked. I dont have any speculations as to what it is to be as I only just got to the hammer peoples temple in Deadly Shadows (it was about 5 years ago).

I would have said that Thief 3 was more sandboxy than the first two. From what I remember, they were competely linear in terms of mission after mission, while Thief 3 you were able to run around the city.

You're lucky... You never had to flashbomb zombies to death.
