I keep hearing all these good things about this game, but it never really interested me and I never gave it a chance. However I might just get this now since it now works on Windows 7.

If you're a Thief fan, you're not even reading this. You've already got GOG loaded up and you're currently rubbing fistfuls of cash into your monitor.
Actually, if you're a Thief fan, you've already got the game installed on your PC. Or you've got the disc on the shelf.

It's one of the best, just don't let Down in the Bonehoard scare you off. It's a shame that the second level is far and away one of the worst.

...not that it's bad per se, but it's more like Tomb Raider than Thief.

Is there a reason that its taken them this long? I know they haven't released System shock 2, Theif 2, or Grim Fandango, and there must be an explanation for this. Hopefully people will buy this, and that will be a good sign to gog that when the community gets what they ask for, then they will in fact buy it.

Yeah, because they didn't finalize a publishing deal with Eidos (now Squeenix) until very recently. Until Lucarts signs a contract with them, they can't release their games, so no Grim Fandango. It's a time consuming and expensive process for these companies to sign these kinds of deals, since they have to have their lawyers draft everything up, collect the game assets, etc. But I think eventually they'll get most of the big games, aside from the System Shocks.

Woohooo. I've been trying to get Thief to run on my rig for months, I've tried every computer in the house but short of resurrecting my ancient Pentium MMX it won't work. This is amazing news.

"Thief Gold on GOG includes the classic sneaker, all dressed up to run without a hitch on modern PCs"

Stopped reading there - that's all I needed to know. I read the list of hoops you have to jump through to get Thief to work after finding my CD version wouldn't play and it made my eyes roll back in my head. If the GOG version will just RUN when I install it to play, I will be the happiest happy who ever happied.

Sidenote, regarding the Bonehoard, I honestly don't understand why so many people dislike this map so much. I don't think of it in terms of "fighting zombies in a thief game;" I see it as an extended tutorial level: you're given a long, somewhat labyrinthine level mostly populated by enemies you can't easily kill, meaning you need to find your way around the unfriendly territory without being seen if at all possible to avoid some very awkward battles.

That's why it's so early on in the game: it's an instructional level for teaching you how to approach the game less as a shooter and more as a sneaker.

Just how I see it, anyway.

I can never quite decide if the best game ever made is this or Deus Ex.
Pretty sure the voice acting of Deus Ex takes it out of the running for "best game ever" all by itself.

Same here. I actually own all the games mentioned in this thread (Thief, System Shock 1 & 2, Grim Fandango..), but nearly all of them either won't run on my modern system or won't run without some sort of unnoticable flaw.

I wish GOG would just release patches for the games it's fixed, but I know that would make no sense for them.

I'm wondering if the GOG release of Beyond Good & Evil runs on modern setups. The version I got on Steam was a no-go. :|

It works fine (a few graphical glitches, nothing major) on my Win 7 64-bit system (Nvidia card).

I may have to risk it, then, given how I've heard nothing but good things about said game.

...after I play through Thief again.

Dude. DUDE.

Bonehoard is one of my favourites. Lost City is great, too.

Yes, I'm one of those guys who loves the monster levels. I could do Bonehoard all day long. In fact, I think I did.

Somebody mentioned the horrendous voice acting in Deus Ex, which is another point I should mention: Thief is one of the earliest games to feature Stephen Russell, who has appeared in numerous games since (most recently Skyrim) and who does an incredible job of bring Garrett to life. He's a cool cat to begin with, but that voice is what puts him over the top.

Because you love DRM? Weird.
Because I have almost 400 games on steam and I'd like to have all of my games in one place.

So add it to your Steam Library.
