Well fuck.

If I had this on pre-order I would immediately cancel right now.

But thanks to the likes of Dragon Age 2 I don't pre-order or buy on brand name alone anymore.

Welp, looks like they're going the "Hitman: Absolution" route. That is, make the game so combat centric nobody can tell it was supposed to be a stealth game anymore.

Also, the combat in Thief was hard? I mean, you couldn't rambo the entire level, but if you were caught by one or two you could deal with it rather easily. Strafe+Slash=Win.

I love how it appears the game dev and everyone in this thread are starting from exactly the same premise, and somehow reaching bewilderingly opposite conclusions.

Dev: "We're changing the system so you're not totally fucked if you're discovered. This system will still be designed to encourage running over killing."
Everyone else: "You're supposed to be totally fucked if you're discovered! You're supposed to run instead of kill things!"

Therefore, I have reached the conclusion that I'm missing something here.
Yes, you're buying what the devs are saying. It's just a pretty way to say they have a robust combat system that ate half the development budget.

You'd be as vulnorable and exposed as you were in Assassin's Creed.

Where do all these morons come from? I'm amazed every single time. Wouldn't it be common sense to find out why it was popular in the first place and try to improve on that formula? I swear the standards have dropped so much now that I believe there is a retard virus going around.

Old Thief: Avoid combat because the combat is hard, and you'll probably die.
New Thief: Avoid combat because the combat sucks, and you'll probably look for something better to play(like old Thief).

Well at least they're still trying to make us avoid combat.
Well they're making me avoid the whole game that's for sure

Fucking next gen, seriously...not an ounce of creativity when it comes to combat. LET'S HAVE THE SAME HATED MECHANICS ALL OVER AGAIN

So Thief's combat may be a little dated, but QTEs and bullet time aren't exactly new and fresh themselves. Plus I liked that Thief did not focus on combat, it made you play like a Thief (crazy right?) and only rely on your sword when in a last resort situation.

Yeah so in my mind this Thief can go slink back in the shadows.

the swordplay of the original games just doesn't work anymore.
And yet Skyrim was one of the most popular games released last year. The combat systems are very similar, it's just that in Skyrim you're supposed to be able to wade through hordes of dragons so you're given the tools to do so, while in Thief you're not so you're given a crappy little dagger. There is no problem with having this kind of swordplay in modern games, the only problem is with fucknuts like this who don't understand the game they're supposed to be making.

I have great trepidation about this change, but will reluctantly give it the benefit of the doubt. I don't like the change of voice actor though, the QTE bullshit or the need for energetic, cinematic cutscenes. All of those things detract from the overall appeal. I want a Thief game dammit. Sadly the world has changed and I have to accept that we're in a generation of 360/PS3 and QTEs. I just wish there were ANY developers out there developing great games like this for PC. :-(

Lets have combat in a game that isn't about combat...

Wuzzat? ... Wuzzat? Thief =/= Assassin? WELL THAT WON'T SELL AT ALL. NO SIR.

If I've learned anything in the past year or so the amount of rage/dissatisfaction shown by gamers on forums is a decent indicator on how a game will sell.

1) Game reboot announced
2) Gamers mad/unsure
3) Game being "made to appeal to broader demographic"
4) Gamers rage
5) Game is fundamentally changed from what it once was
6) Gamers rage
7) Game sells gangbusters.

Not every gamer does their research online or knows about how the franchise originally started (or is online at all, or is over 15, etc.). I was surprised how much anger Microsoft conjured up so I have no idea which is the majority.

"I don't know if you remember with the previous game? Let's say I've been detected; it was really, really tough to survive. You know? It was unforgiving," he said. "Game over."
I'm not gonna be the first, and most certainly not gonna be the last, but aren't you supposed to... I a "Thief" game, to wel... STEAL stuff... not fight people? You know, like... playing as a THIEF, I don't think the game was called "ASSASSIN" nor "FIGHTER", but "Thief".

"Thus the new combat system, which he said is a "fair balance" that will focus on escape rather than victory"
No you're not, the games already had a "run and hide" system and that worked pretty well, and trying to "balance" what was already balanced to begin with never ends in good results.

I just don't get these guys that take on older IPs saying "wee wee wee games were too hard and nobody wants that anymore", FUUUUUUCK YOUUU!

... I don't think this guy understands what a "Thief" is...

Now I feel that Mr. Warren Specter Has a reason to hate this new Thief game.

Sounds kinda shit.

Would have liked a stealth game where stealth was the only option. Apparently not.

When I first got Thief: The Dark Project I failed the first mission at least a dozen times because I tried to fight my way in through the front gate. It wasn't until I watched the mission briefing again and checked my map that I realized I was being a fool. Seriously, I have no idea how my younger self screwed that up so badly.

The only time I can recall that getting caught resulted in an instant game over was in Thief 2. You were breaking INTO the watch headquarters. To plant evidence. And you were playing on Expert.

If you got spotted in the original Thief games I'm pretty sure everyone employed the same strategy. Drop a flash bomb and run like the wind.

Sadly, this has finally convinced me that this isn't Thief. I will not be buying this game. :(
