Things that annoy you while playing online

people who remark on your equipment in MMO's (wow and anarchy are the main culprits here)
If i want your advice i will fucking ask for it. It's fine if for example i say "urgh my damage sucks" Fine suggest better equipment. if i join your team and people say "dude you should get xxx" that's what really annoys me, the people who are convinced you have to be some sort of cookie cutter, or have the absolute best equipment you can, or you suck and can't play the game. That and corpse campers, killing someone once is fair enough (all good) and killing them again if they attack you also all good. But someone 3 times my level standing over my corpse and raping me repeatedly, really, really not cool.

That and using gay as an insult, other than the fact i seem to have missed where that became insulting in the first place, its possibly the most unoriginal insult i can think of.

"your mum" jokes are fine if they are done properly (see xkcd :p) But yeah it is hideously overused.

I would say that there are two things that annoy me online. First are beggars and scammers from MMORPGs. This is why I stay out of core empire space when I'm playing EVE, and stay out in zero security space with my friends, simply because none of them ever dare to show their faces out there.

The other is the dipwits who play music over their mike while I'm playing CoD4. Thankfully, I own the PS3 version, so there is no text chat, and I can mute them (I typically play free-for-all, where bad teamwork is irrelevant). Usually, however, I get laughs when someone starts taunting me or flaming me. It just makes me want to torment them even more during the match.

The thing I don't get, however, is why some of the dipwits keep repeating my name over and over again (my online name for CoD4 is the same as my pen name here). They don't do this for other people, and they can't seem to stop, and I don't get it. It usually doesn't matter, since I mute everyone now, but I don't get what kind of bizarre power my online name has. A friend gave me the name long ago, and it is just a name! Jeez.

Finally, as an American, I really am ashamed of all the racist assholes who keep dragging the rest of us through the dirt, and providing the rest of the world with a very unpleasant stereotype. If an American is being an ass, fine, torment him (I certainly will), but don't stereotype the rest of us who just play for fun.

What I hate is not just the stereotyping of people but the actual real behaviour some people fall into

Aussies: I'm an Aussie and proud of it, I don't wrestle crocodiles, I'm not stuck in the negatives of the IQ and we get so screwed over with servers because we only get the choice of Euro servers which lag from distance, asian servers which are populated by Korean Starcraft fanatics or what ever game its, and American servers which have better ping than europe and more English speakers.
I will point out that we have this retard sense of smugness and arrogance because we think we're so good for not having such obvious problems in our society(like the Jaws poster), namely screwing over the aborigines at settlement and the fact in comparison to the rest of the world in pricing we have a 100% mark up (not including the current exchange rate of $1AUD to 96.3 Us cents) and usually a 2 year delay compared to you guys so stop whining about the bloody price and the bloody wait.

Americans: What can I say about them? Racist, sexist, barely competent, blinded by their own self righteous jingoism and unfortunately filling the chat/lobby with either 1337/txt speak, or condemning everyone else for not conforming to their dumbed down version of English. (I am however aware that such exceptions exist and I encourage them to reproduce, seize power and implement some form of eugenics for the sake of everyone else.) I don't hate america, just what it does.

British: Well being so pessimistic about games, and forming a Barmy Army the moment they hear an Aussie or Kiwi is in the match.

New Zealand: Pretty much the same as Aussies only worse, they keep pointing out that the Treaty of Waitangi includes the natives, so they only have 1 of our problems

wow.. most of you guys sound like 40 yr old gamers/noobs lol.

Don't forget that games are.. well, games. People play them to have fun in different ways. Sometimes annoying people like you guys is fun because you cry so damn much when you can't 'game' seriously. Even when there's no1 annoying you you still suck so it doesn't matter
can i say 'him'?

his points (not the rant) are valid, its his attitude that i hate about online gamers in general (he may not do this online, he is just the example), immediately plonking someone into an archetype or stereotype based on their actions is just idiotic, until you meet the person, the only thing their playing style reveals to you is their playing style, such generalizations are the death of most online phenomena.

As for the rant part of that quote... well, lets just say you definitely let us understand how you think.

online, the key is really to find a forum dedicated to a certain server, log on, ask around and get a feel for the environment there, you can be looking at several at once, and if you can find a decent group to play with, its well worth the wait, they do exist.

that said, i do prefer the online RTS crowd, its generally quiet and most are happy to let actions speak louder than words, a warp spider platoon in the centre of your guardsmen squads hurts far more than a slur on your sexuality, especially if persistent bodies is on.

I second that. As much as I enjoy perforating people with an M60 online, it is (usually) much more enjoyable to bash heads with someone on an RTS game. There are exceptions, of course, but for the most part I enjoy playing RTS games online more than shooters. Unless I'm in a bad mood, don't feel like commanding tanks and would rather perforate someone with an M60.

And Eyclonus, I would argue that the Americans you are describing are in the minority. Unfortunately, it's an extremely vocal, moronic minority that tarnishes the rest of us who are (or at least try to be) decent people. The reason you never hear from the rest of us is that we don't want to be in any way associated with them and their shit slinging, so we keep quiet. Mostly because no matter how hard you try, you can't win an argument with an imbecile. No matter what you say, they don't listen anyway. Hence why I have no mike on my PS3, have learned to love the mute button, and, well, learned to love perforating them with an M60.

I hate those people playing online games using dial-up, they lag so bad they seem to teleport and are impossible to snipe.

Sorry if someone already said this, I only skimmed the other posts.

thats not a mistake, thats a strategy (sarcasm)

people who complain that using the tried and tested methods are 'cheating' (not you raikone, you just reminded me of this)

its like in Tekken or the like, you mash the one button, kick the crap out of your opponent, and then they whine, it works! why stop? you just wish you could do it, online examples include things like spawn camping or people who get pissed when you 'pot', thats the damn point of a potion you idiot... sorry, that always gets me mad.

one more reason to play RTS's online, there are no potions, only a barbarian horde running through your supposedly 'impenetrable' tree wall to kill all your peasants... priceless

well answering the thread it really pisses me off when people eat chips or sound like theyre eating the mic. I almost always think of a witty anticdote to that situation but i cant think of one i would say right now.

The most annoying thing about playing online huh

*being called a noob by a person who started playing 5 minute before you
*Being owned by the same camper for the 9 flocking bustard time
*being banned or kicked from a server because u managed to destroy the server owners team with a knife and a pistol. (happened to me twice)

camping is a legitimate strategy. not to be confused with basecamping.

basecamping is just proving you're an utter asshole. Camping can be done in real life, and IS DONE in real life, and if you can't get around a camper you just deserve to get shot time and time again.

Well there is just one thing you have to realize when playing online, ANYONE CAN DO IT. There are going to be the annoying little kids, and the music-playing bafoons, and the "YOUR MOM IS A ****" players. It's just realality. It's not going to go away. That's why god invented the "Mute" button.

Most other people in FPS's. I believe Yahtzee said it best when he said "They can be nicely described as enthusiastic, and uncharitiably described as a bunch of raving dickheads".

Summed up my experience with counterstrike pretty nicely. And people wonder why I play single player only.

I do have to agree with Gavaroc, as I am also 13 and I may not be some gameing demigod, but I don't type like "OMG, i lov u u r so c@@l!", then make fun of you for killing me. I don't sing over the mic unless I slipped my age and become annoyed that people stoped telling me anything anymore. Then I break out my laptop and look up the lyrics to a Guns and Roses song. I've never actualy done that but I do sing if I'm playing alone with my freinds. Anyways, I just want to say mabye a round 27% of 13 year old gamers will be anoying, but just imagine them never getting laid because they were irritating as crap. Also, give us a chance first please.

I don't get all the hate for 'kids' around, aren't videogames designed for younger folks? Personally I get more irritated by the self-righteous thirtysomethings who think playing video games is OMG SERIOUS BUSINESS, lighten up, shouldn't you guys be at work anyhow?

Some SA wisdom: http://www.somethingawful.com/d/art-of-warcraft/primer-on-social.php
for things that I'm sure annoy us all.

I've always hated the existence of the term noob.
Sure I'm ok if someone refers to me as the newbie if I'm new at the game. But being called noob, n00b or q00µ or any other variation when I say or do something that the hardcore player might not have said/done even when I've actually played the game for a long time, sometimes for years (WoW), I feel like ripping the guts out of the moron. Which I guess is the result the moron was seeking...

One thing I remember was back in the days when I played CS and I told people that I was going go about it a certain way I got half a team of n00b shouts at me, I ignored them and carried out my plan and ended up being the sole survivor of my team against the entire enemy team after just a couple of minutes. Playing it sneaky I managed to take out every single one of them. Still I got even more n00b shouts at me when the next round began, from both teams, from my team for being such an ass that I didn't commit suicide quickly to end the round so they could be respawned and from the enemies for being a cheating wh-ing dick (which I wasn't). I logged off and never returned to that server again.

It's people like that that has made me always try to play with just my friends.
