Are there any things you like (or dislike) in games that others might find odd? Not just mechanics, ambience, graphics etc. all count too.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of maps in shooters and RPGs (and any first/third person game for that matter) that have train. The nice ambient noise of the train hitting the ground sounds really great usually, and graphically I just like how rain looks in a lot of games. I also like it when you get droplets of water on your face or visor or whatever in first person games.

Personally, i enjoy it when i can see my game character in mirrors or reflective surfaces. Or when i can succesfully trick enemies into moving into my claymores. Or games that let me overlook the map before heading in, like a planning stage before the attack.

I like being able to put my weapons away. Just take a break from monster fighting and skip around town, pretending to have something to do or that I'm actually making progress instead of being an idiot.

Then I get ambushed and massacred because I didn't have any weapons equipped. Good times, Dark Souls.

The fact that Fable 2 does not allow this is what made me snap it in two and microwave it after I finished the main campaign. It does not redeem. Fuck that shit.

I also don't like vehicles being around the game world, especially in open world or sandbox games, and that they are acknowledged in-universe, and are a story mechanic, but not a gameplay mechanic. Why can't I use this car? There is no reason why I cannot. Fuck you, game. Are there cars or not? They cannot exist in a state of metaphysical quasi-reality, sometimes used and sometimes not. Because that's stupid, as is this entire paragraph.

I really enjoy the ability to dash, especially back-dash.

Any time I see an action game and it has a good dash in it I go fucking nuts about it.

That was one of my only complaints about Metal Gear Rising Revengence, the ninja run is stupid and would have been way better if it was jumps and dashes instead. Then the Jetstream Sam DLC came out and it was FANTASTIC because Sam has double jumps and dashes. Seriously though, fuck ninja run.

I'm quite fond of inventory management. It's a shame so many people edit it out of their Let's Plays.

Cutscenes.

Yep, I know they're looked down upon now, but I still like a good cutscene.

Grinding

I find grinding in rpgs to be relaxing. You are playing, no story to focus on, no complex boss to figure out, just you and some enemies to kill while you prepare for the next segment. It fulfills the need for a bit of mindless gaming while being more "productive" than something like a mindless phone game.

Practical equipment makes me enjoy an RPG (or any fantasy game) twice as much. I'm tired of all of those bullshit fantasy designs with spikes and large pauldrons. When I see such designs in a game, it sorta makes me resent it.

Things I like in games..that Other people find weird...hmmm.
I can't really come up with anything right now..
Maybe..

Exploration?
I love exploration, in almost any games that lets you explore and uncover things, lore, items and of course maps.
From such varied games as Freelancer, EV Nova, any 4X game, hack'n'slash or adventure type. I love that feeling.

Which ties into, Taking The Time.
I really don't like to be rushed, so games that let me set my own pace of advancement are ones I really find enjoyment in.
That automatically disqualifies a lot of games, some which I still play but for other reasons.

After I come back to this thread, I'm sure a lot of posters will have mentioned things that "just" slipped my mind ,)

I used to enjoy grinding in MMO's. If i did it with a party then we would chat on some ridiculous topics or just do some crazy shit that would get half if not all of us wiped out and if it was solo i would put some TV show or a movie in the corner of my screen and grind until i run out of things to watch. It just occured to me that i still havent finished "Dexter" and many more shows since i quit that game.

Lately I've found I'm all about the footsteps. If a game has bad footstep sounds, or the footsteps don't match the ground I'm walking on, it just really bugs me. The opposite is true as well. This is one of the things that totally turned me off of FFXIV. Just moving around bugged me so much because of how terrible the footsteps sound was.

Also, in FPS game, I can't stand when I look down but can't see my body or at least my legs. Everything else about the game can be perfect but if I can't see my legs, I just feel like a floating camera with arms and it kills things for me.

Oddly enough one thing I love about a lot of games is the bugs that come with it.

Don't get me wrong I hate bug riddled train wrecks but I miss the good old days where a few bugs always slipped by and learning to use / exploit them was a big thing to show off to your friends. Even now some games are known for memorable and entertaining bugs, with skyrims backwards flying dragons (which I can recreate in the PS4 Dragon Age Inquisition) or even good old missingno from pokemon.

I do admit whole heartedly this was more entertaining when bugs were the exception and not the norm.

I really enjoyed weapon jamming and complete weapon malfunctions in Far Cry 2. I understand why they got rid of it in Far Cry 3 and 4, because it took control away from the player and added an annoying level of resource management while generally not being very fun, but I really wish more games (FPSs especially) tackle weapon malfunctions. It gave you reason to not pick up random weapons on the ground and encouraged you to maintain your favorite weapon, and the added danger (like a cooked grenade dropping in front of you from a malfunctioned M79) was different. I liked it a lot.

The only other game I can recall that features weapon jamming is Fallout, but a gun jamming in Fallout means that there's a chance it can reload slightly longer and it doesn't actively screw you up like Far Cry 2.

This is odd merely because of how specific it is, but I love dodge cancelling in action games. Any time where you can cancel your attack into a movement command, like a dash or a dodge, feels absolutely amazing to me. It makes me feel untouchable, like I can attack with impunity because I can dodge anything my enemies throw at me at a moment's notice. It's satisfying, practical AND stylish! What could be better?

Something I always check in FPS games for some strange reason (and love), looking down and checking if you can see your own legs.

Seem to remember a phase of it some years ago like the original FEAR game and maybe a couple ghost recons...

I like when your weapon appears/disappears out of nowhere...
I like when you can make your character's walking animation "glitch" out through quick slight tapping of the analog stick...
I like when characters have various standing animations when you're not moving them anywhere...
I like seeing a character's most ridiculous outfits clash with the actual cutscenes in the game...
I love level-grinding for no reason other than to level-grind...

I think that's about it... Honorable mention to having the game's sound FX unintentionally meshing with the game's OST...

Was it Resident Evil 4? I remember that game's Attache Case being the kicker to my obsession over prettying up all my future in game purses.

OT:
I love animation canceling.

I got this drive from playing DMC4 so often, to basically find a way to make every game FASTER by way of intentionally breaking it's intended flow. How to do that? Get the urge to find a specific input that cancels animations.

Ex. When I discovered a game like Dark Souls had animation glitches that can be used skillfully into gameplay, oh boy... I couldn't hep myself wanting to master it! The results were simply to die for.

Oh yeah, it's pretty awesome~ Except in NG2 though where you could very well dodge cancel by dashing... right into another attack. >_<

"Shitty" shooting mechanic apparently. I thought the shooting mechanics of Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us were perfectly fine.

I can't speak for all grinding but I enjoyed grinding on Demon's Souls. I remember I did rather poorly on an organic chemistry midterm and I wasn't feeling great because of it. What I did for an hour or two was grind away on Demon's Souls for a chance to get a rare item drop. It was a simple and menial task that I was able to do without much thinking. So I think I understand what you mean.

I'd have to feel pretty shitty about myself to enjoy it though.

The sound of footsteps on snow in Penumbra Overture remains the most specific thing that has ever impressed me in a game.
