Yeah, that was annoying. Though, not so much as the thing with Derpy Hooves, and big parts of the fandom blathering on nonstop about tolerance and friendship and stuff suddenly lost it because the show decided making fun of a mentally handicapped person wasn't a great idea.

I just remember everyone declaring "This is now a pony thread' and taking over all the time to spam pony pictures.

Anyway, the Derpy Hooves thing was interesting and more complicated then you are making it sound.
Ok, so a bit of history, Derpy Hooves was the result of an animation error. She was supposed to be a normal unnamed background pegasus mare but instead had messed up eyes.
The crew making the show noticed the error but instead of fixing it they liked it and had her eyes changed for all the shots when she was in the background. The fandom ended up falling in love with her and finding her in the crowd ended up being like a where's Waldo? kind of thing for the fandom.
In season 2 the show gave her a scene in the episode the last roundup and they did it in kinda the worst way they could as you can see from this clip where they made her a type of accident prone klutz type character.
The voice was because the VA Tabitha St. Germain thought she was doing the voice for a colt and they made Derpy just stupid, this caused a lot of discussion in the fandom, but after airing a viewer contacted the show complaining about the scene, Hasbro changed it, giving her a different voice, making her eyes less crossed and removing the fandom name Derpy. If you have been on the internet for any amount of time, you know how people like to freak the fuck out about censorship and that is what happened here. It would be awhile till Derpy appeared in the back ground again and would get more voice lines in later seasons, but she would never officially be called Derpy again, in the credits she would always be named Muffins.
