Here's a thought.
Whats wrong with the world these days?
War. Its the one critical flaw that we all have a problem with.
All the money we put into war is just a waste of good money. For example: The B-2 bomber program cost the U.S. airforce 45BILLION dollars.
That money could have been used to find a cure for cancer or leukaemia. If war was to stop and just vanish, then all the people that were involved with war in some way could have other jobs as scientists of researchers, if they had the experience needed then maybe we would advance more as a society.
Call me crazy but if there were such thing as aliens, they probably advanced their society to the point of UFOs, by putting aside war and violence to become a way farther advance race than us. If we did the same.. well then it would probably go like this.
1.Humanity stopped war 2.we begin to advance 3.Find cures for all diseases 4.cheat death more often 5. 6.flying cars and robots (hell ya!) 7.live on mars 8.meet other life in the universe 9.(possible) We get attacked by the aliens and wipe out (unless the robots get us first). END...?
But in all seriousness, we've had war since our ancestors been smashing each others heads in with rocks. What if it was to stop suddenly?
That may be something we'll never know.

Right about here, my mind started saying "LIKE A BOSS" after every point.

Also, you're completely right. We will never know this. It would only work with a one-world government, but then there would still be dozens of rebel factions trying to take the power back or whatever. Maybe in a few thousand more years, when humanity's culture converges into one.

Ah you see the problem is, those B-2s will come in useful if the alien life we meet is hostile.

I do wonder though, why do we need to spend so much money on the wars we are having at the moment? If it was a world war, where we were against big countries and losing the war would have massive implications, then perhaps that would be understandable. However, we aren't in that situation, we are fighting against a bunch of tiny militia groups.

I've seen a lot of alien based shows on TV and some on the internet but most of them never seem hostile, just a bit scary looking and curious of our kind...uh if they existed...

Problem is that without wars, we wouldn't have many of the things we take for granted now. Many modern technologies are the direct or indirect result of wars or preparation for war. The internet is an example.

War is terrible, but the extreme duress and sense of urgency it causes has done wonders for technological advancement.

"War...war never changes."

Pretty much sums it up. We'll never agree on enough things to end war completely, but we should at least stop as much violence as possible.

World peace is an illusion. We will never reach it and never will. We'll end up destroying each other before we even get close to world peace. The only way world peace will be attained is if we as a species decide to just kill ourselves off. Sorry if this is too negative, but it's life.

I think you're oversimplifying the problem here. My main problem here is with you saying that war is the source of our problems when it would be more accurate to say that war is a byproduct of other problems. Namely, the wars in the Middle East are largely in due to economic reasons, not clashing ideology or some askew form of patriotism. You want world peace? You get rid of capitalism and replace it with some form of socialism that frees people up to do whatever they want by having robots do all the manual labor.

Second of all, as mentioned above, fighting is human nature, and that's good, because if it wasn't we wouldn't be Earth's dominate species.

Third of all, war, as sad as it is, has provided us with many revolutionary technologies.

I agree... Death, famine, pestilence, war are all good things for the species.

well perhaps not, but thing is.. think about it... 7 billion people are fighting for the same resources now... its expected to grow upwards of 15 billion then plateau. twice the population now for the same set of resources considering how many people starve to death already is not a good equation.

That is the problem with being the species on the planet with no natural predators, there is nothing to thin out the herd. And from my understanding overpopulation of any species is a major factor in breeding diseases. So, if we have no natural predators, what is left to thin out the herd?

Scientific discovery stems from wartime research. I like my wars, thank you.

World peace is all well and good on paper, but think for a moment what that world would be like. What possible reason could humanity be given to stop fighting, stop disagreeing? I figure it would take either unifying threat or mind control. Besides, everyone knows we only got into space because of a pissing contest between world powers. Either the military or the private sector are going to get us to space colonization, and either way, you can bet your ass they're bringing guns. I don't care how remote the chance is we'll find life, we'll be prepared when Space-Cthulu rears his head.

War will always happen, unfortunately. Sometimes its over money, sometimes over events, usually at the core its about religion or ideas. For us not to have war... we'd have to all have one religion, all have one currency, besically live in a somewhat communistic society where no one has individual will or ideas.

HOWEVER! If it did happen... well, supposedly when it happens, that is the sign that the antichrist is here becuase he unites the world. whether or not thats true is up to debate. So if it happened one of two things would happen.

1) the world would be on its way to ending in seven years.
2) People would be so overwhelmed with the idea, i dont htink people could handle it.

Just the idea that NO ONE out there wants to hurt or kill another person is so mind bending it makes my hjead want to explode, becuase you're forsaking one of the primary basic human emotions: hate/anger/envy/lust/ any of those seven deadly sin things. So i dont know. I guess i would say if it happened... society would either strength around the idea or fall apart from it.

World peace sounds hilariously boring, I'd build my own private military and proceed to do some old school rape/pillage until humanity put it's balls back in their proper place.

I don't think civilization has ever known peace. Each civilization is always in transition to another. One group invades another and sets up shop, only to be conquered by the next group. It could be through politics or through hostile methods, but I don't think people could deal without conflict.

Unfortunately, the reason that our society is so disconnected is because of a lack of camaraderie. The news stokes the fires with saying a predator is in your backyard. As was said in M.I.B. "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119654/quotes]

We've built our communities further and further away from city centers to be away from each other. When people are crammed together in public, things tend to turn ugly at the slightest provocation. As a result, we rely more and more on fossil fuels to get in and out of the city, causing more congestion on the roads to get to those homes. Increasing the likelihood of accidents or road rage. And like a junkie, we look everywhere and do anything to get that oil. Scar the Earth, torch the sky, and lead our soldiers to ruin.

The future will only change if our mentality changes. I believe the Mass Effect had it right. When the Earth discovered remnants of life on Mars, they stopped seeing countries and territories, and thought of the Earth as a whole.

Even in times of peace there will still be human vices that lead to conflict. We are only human after all.

Unfortunatly, world peace will never occur. I could take the EASY road and cite religious reasons (i.e. fallen world/sin nature/different religions demand blood/etc), but I'll go the hard road instead: Human Greed.

Wait, that wasnt really much harder, was it?

We're all greedy little bastards. It's just a fact. The way we've functioned and always WILL is "You have what I want, therefor I will kill you to get it/prove my point!"

Yes, certain societies have managed to live a fairly peaceful existance with the rest of the world (Switzeland, anyone?), but that's USUALLY because they are so fucking badass that no one wants to mess with them (or they have all the money... Switzerland, anyone? lawl).

Plus, as stated above, scientific discovery stems from wartime research. Almost every major advancement we have is thanks to research done during SOME WAR.

Rockts? World War II missle research. Jets? Guess what? Germany in World War II (they also did the whole rocket thing, too.)! Aircraft was in peacetime, yes. 1903, NC cost, two brothers who worked on bikes.

Surgical procedures? Most of those are tested in the field hospitals.

Hell, even food preservation came from war!

Not saying war is a good thing, it's NOT. But unfortunatly, it's going to continue, regardless what we do.

Someone is ALWAYS going to piss in the cornflakes, it's just life man.

And as far as aliens etc, if they make it to us (and yes, I DO believe there is life out there somewhere, we'd have to be VERY ignorant not to, ja?)... We're totally boned.

Just sayin'.
