Thinking of getting into Fallout...

The whole premise of the Fallout series interests me, and I was wondering what it's like and what game I should get, or if I should wait until the next one (if they are making another one).

Edit: I'm personally interested in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, so I'm probably gonna get either one or maybe both.

I would go straight into Fallout 3. Never played New Vegas, and I've been warned off it by more than one person. If you don't mind playing retro games and you're up for a pretty serious challenge, play the original too.

Fallout 2 was a horrible horrible game, I hope that was a typo and you meant Fallout 3.

OT:-
Fallout 3 is a great place to start.

If you can stomach an ugly, bug-filled, 2D isometric, difficult, turnbased RPG from the late 90's I recommend playing Fallout 1, then Fallout 2 and then skipping straight to Fallout New Vegas.
The other Fallouts aren't really worth the time spent on them, in my opinion. Fallout: Tactics is decent, but the system doesn't lend itself too well to squadbased tactical games and Fallout 3 is bland, uninteresting and just recycles all the concepts from Fallout 2 without any regard for "realism" or lore-continuity.

Just grab Fallout 3. It's a damn good game, and while the older ones are too, they have mechanics that seem very dated nowadays, so it's best to start with one that feels easy to get into, so Fallout 3.

Calumon: You want to get in and Fallout? That's just silly... And fun! Me next!

I'd still recommend Fallout 1 (patched), Fallout 2, 3 and New Vegas.

If you're more of a recent gamer, then you might want to try New Vegas out first. It pretty much sticks to modern RPG conventions, which means a lot of hybrid shooter gameplay. If you're not at ease with having to crunch numbers or having to wait turns, it's a good starting point. It's also an improvement over Fallout 3 in several small, but not exactly negligible areas. Weapons can be modded, the game has an iron-sights mechanic, companions are better handled overall...

On the other hand, if you've got the stones for a more classic experience, try Fallout 2 first. It improves the second one by removing the egregious time limit the first one had and essentially plays out like a turn-based isometric sandbox.

And obviously, if you're *really* jonesing to get the full chronology firsthand, then find Fallout 1, patch it or mod it so the time limit's removed, and go from there.

The third game sits nicely in the middle, seeing as it's the series' introduction to Bethesda's usual mechanics. If you're familiar with the Elder Scrolls series and particularly with Oblivion, then you just might want to start out with Fallout 3.

Start with Fallout 3 and if you like it move on to New Vegas. Then if your in the mood for an older turn based rpg then go back and play 1 and 2. Fallout 3 can be described as similar to oblivion but with modern equipment. It is a first person shooter in case you didn't know with a pseudo turn based system for shooting but you can ignore that entirely if you want. So that is my recommendation, you should play them. However I am a big fan of all of them so take my opnion for what it is worth.

All the games in the main series are good in their own way. I'd say either Fallout 1 or Fallout 3 are good starting points, honestly. A bit of a warning however, lots of the things in Fallout 3 kind of clash with the other games in the series, but it's still a good game despite that. Tactics is a fun game, but don't even bother with Brotherhood of Steel.

I know a lot of people have love for the earlier ones, but I do think if you're starting out, 3 - GOTY edition is the place to do it.

1 and 2 are pretty harsh, good games but damn tough, 3 is a lot easier to get on with and still is highly enjoyable.

NV is great too, but you'll get 3 cheaply now with all the DLC included.

As you can see, it's a bit controversial.

Personally, I 'missed' Fallout 1 and 2 by not having the PC to play them. So I started with Fallout 3 (NV wasn't out yet) and moved into New Vegas in due time. It was fine for me, though I do understand from my fiance that I've missed out by having skipped 1 & 2.

Bottom line is you should look at the games yourself a little bit and pick one that suits what you're looking for in a game.

If you're a PC gamer, start with 1 then move onto 2, 3, New Vegas and anything inbetween.
If you're a console-tard (Like me) start with 3 to learn the basic controlls then move onto New Vegas - I don't know why but to me New Vegas seemed to think you'd played the other games first - then after that you can try the first 2. I've played and enjoyed both 3 and New Vegas but trying to play the first two on my computer is frustrating, for me at least you might have better luck.

Depends on how much you can stomach classic graphics/games. The Old Fallout games are vastly different from 3 or New Vegas, and as much as nostalgia on this board will say play 1 or 2 first, I started with 3 and was fine, enjoyed it immensely and have well over 160 hours between 3 and New Vegas

If you can take older games, start with 1 or 2, and play as a low intelligence character for great fun.

If you want modern, go with New Vegas.

get fallout NV, its really fallout 3.5, its makes it fixes alot of issues with fallout 3 and theres way more weapons, so you can have different styles of play, i think ive beaten NV like 5 times, each time with a differnt weapons (guns, energy, hand 2 hand, etc)

get fallout 3. if you weigh the cost to benefit ratio against the entertainment value of all the games, it's the most economical choice.

Since you are new to the series and have no regards for the lore FO3 is a good place to start. Its an expansive game with a lot of fun stuff to do. If you are really interested in the stories and the world of Fallout, 1 or 2 might not be that bad if you can stand old school games. I haven't had the time to try it yet, but I have seen many people ragequit the older games after getting into the series at 3 or NV. If you want the world and lore but the modern gameplay mechanics, NV is just fine (I have issues with it but there is still stuff to do). The only big problem with getting into NV right now is they just released the last DLC, so in a couple of month they will probably release a GOTY edition with all the DLC and save you a good deal of money if you wait.
For what its worth, I started with 3 and got into it just fine. I have been talking with people and understand some of the classic FO player's issues with 3, but it is a nice jumping off point. And in the NV vs 3 debate, you will probably get more value out of 3 for right now.
