OK, sorry, but WTF. You guys are trying to cut down on people spamming ads by making me transcribe a gorram ad? I'm sorry, but no. In what world does that make sense? I can't be the only person with an opinion on this.

NOTE: I'm not condemning all use of Captcha, it serves a purpose, but this use seems counter-intuitive to me.

HOW DARE THIS FREE WEBSITE AND FORUM USE ADVERTISEMENTS TO SUSTAIN ITSELF!!!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist. Yes, the CAPTCHAs are annoying, but I'd rather that than having to pay for things like Zero Punctuation or Unskippable.

Yes, please can we do something else? I despise Toyota, and you guys have me filling out their little slogans every other post. I noticed no spam before this, to me it seems unnesecary.

it was explained in another threat, server admins fear alots of bots will start showing up soon due to an abnormaly high account creation rate by bots.

I don't see the problem. Yeah, it can be unreadable and take a couple of goes, but you only have to do it every now and again. Keeps out spammers and lets the mods focus on the dipsticks that need a good suspendin'.
I was about to say I haven't had to do it for ages, but then I had to for this post, but my point still stands!

The Captach system isn't shiny, I know, but there have been plenty of threads about this and in fact there is a user group with alerts to all technical aspects of the site. I'm sure your complaints and ideas are welcome there..but this has been said and done many times now..

This is their website, we play by their rules.

Oddly enough I only get those after I posted so I don't have to fill them out.

Is it a bad thing? Should I still complete them?

To reiterate: I am not against captchas. I understand the need for it. It's the principle of combating ads with more intrusive ads that I take issue with.

Also if I have to type "our fares only at southwest.com" one more time I may just throw something.

So when are Captcha's actually used? I have only come across them once when I sent a message to a staff member asking for help with something. I have not experienced them anywhere else (unless age verification things count?).

Except the first is a strawman and the second is a false dichotomy.

I know you're joking with the first bit, but as we've already got ads and that;'s not the prescribed purpose of the captchas it requires turning off your logic center to get there from here.

And the latter simply isn't a realistic "either or" scenario.

I had to type the above just to post the above post AND the thread. a captcha that cycles through the same thing more than once in a row isn't going to be very effective.

There is a solution, but you'll probably find a way to take issue with it as well:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/subscription/

Pub Club members are immune to the evil advertisements, and largely immune to CAPTCHA as well (the IT guys know specifically where they are implemented, not me.)

Thank You.

You're a Pub Club guy, you don't get them as a bot isn't likely to pay money then spam the forums. Or something like that.

OT: I'm still using the reCaptcha ones and the bugs with that one (The first attempt always being wrong thing) seems to have been fixed now. Although I do think they should go for the ad based ones, as they are a lot easier to read.

Anyway, not much of a problem for me, I only get one every ten or so posts, plus it takes like 10 seconds of time to fill out.

I see why they've been implemented, and so long as they do their job of keeping the site spam free, I'm all for it. Plus, I usually only have to enter in a Captcha about a couple of times per day at most.

Read the last 2 news posts.

"I've noticed that reCaptcha tends to serve up non-text or totally incomprehensible text fairly often, so we're going to test a different captcha system on about half the users (called Solvemedia). This one can mix phrases, animated images, or ads into the captcha instead of the reCaptcha scanned text images - the ones that I've seen so far tend to be a lot easier to understand (the ad-based ones are in clear, plain text)."

The Escapist is not making money off of the add-captchas.
