Works best in stereo. On the left we have Katy Perry, on the right we have Kesha (I refuse to write her name with a dollar symbol due to basic human decency).

People laugh when I say all pop music sounds the same and is specifically designed to emulate itself in an endless loop. This, I believe, proves my point. I haven't done a 'mashup' here, I've literally just played them at the same time.

Is this a sign that music is stagnating? How long is it going to be before 'pop' music is actually good again?
Pop music is bad by definition, and music's not stagnating, it has already stagnated. Most people only know pop music, because you don't find quality music on tv. That's just how it is, and how it's gonna be.
People aren't just becoming stupid, they're already stupid. Don't try to change the system, do what all really smart people do: Exploit it.

Fixed that for you, sounds more accurate doesn't it?

That's my main justification for hating pop music.

There's no talent to it, and yet they have the largest, undeserved fame and success.

That's why i usually stick to progressive metal. It's more interesting.
Thumps up, dude. Any genre of metal, rock, punk, indie, etc. is more interesting than that shit in the OP.

I think music glamourises going out and getting drunk and fucked by random people.

listen to the lyrics its nothing but filth, i may sound like an old man but how can people let their yooung daughters listen to this then get suprised when they get pregnant?

The worst thing is you cant exactly stop them because they will resent you and youd be like a fucking nazi so all you can do is explain to them why emulating these people is wrong.

the stupid spoiled whore episode of south park explains my sentiments exactly

Sort of reminds me of this video featuring those douche-bags in Nickleback:
The song progression is so cookie cutter, and it really applies to a good 90% of what's on the radio.

The truth is, you can probably find examples like that in every genre.

Thankfully, I'm yet to find an example like that in my favorite genre (prog rock/metal), but I bet there is one as well (especially since my Tool-fanatic friend told me countless times, that 'x sounds like Tool's y'. I never listen to him, but...).

Anyway back to lisening to muse
You have no idea how hard it is for me to crack up in the middle of my professor's lecture right now.

OT: Music by nature is going to have some songs that sound alike. It happens, but it happens in pop music a lot more. Not everything in this world is going to be original, unfortunately. Modern pop music is a wonderful example of this.

Oh, the similarities between these songs are not the problem... The problem is both lyrics are rubbish, the artists not very talented and the "beat" makes me want to strangle kittens. And I REALLY love kittens...

And seeing as "pop" music is "popular" music, it'll be good again once average Joe gets his ears on straight and can see crap for what it is... Crap...
Not my kittens, surely?

Surely they're just too adorable to strangle!
Ahem:

Awwwwwwwwwwwww!!! CYOOT KITTY!

...That is all.

I suggest the OP never visit TV Tropes.

Repetition and similarity has existed in media since it's beginning. Sometimes it's homage, sometimes it's people having similar experiences and influences, sometimes it's downright theft[footnote]Intellectual theft, that is[/footnote].

I hate pop cos IT IS NOT A GENRE, it is merely watered down versions of genres which have good underground scenes at the time

I don't like either of their songs but it has nothing to do with that. Their music just doesn't appeal to me, that's all.

Besides, there are other songs you can do that to. Go onto youtube and look up "four cords axis of awesome" - it's the same four cords with popular songs. It's inevitable that something like that happens.

So what. You could do the same thing with any 12-bar blues from the 30s or any rock or doo-wop from the 1950s.
You're always here to defend pop music, aren't you?

Is it bad that I actually thought that, when they're both played together, it didn't sound half bad. Well, that is when the bass actually matched up. And yeah, people can do this with any genre of music. The only truly "original" songs are the experimental ones, and I'm using the term "songs" very loosely here.

You and I have shockingly similar avatars...are we pop stars now?

My two cents is that pop songs use familiar progression, chording and lyrical styles because people like things that are familiar, and record companies make money by giving people what they want.

The lyrics are largely meaningless too, they're just there to carry the melody line. You'll get a good laugh if you actually listen to a lot of them, I usually do.

Yes, there is a LOT of music that doesn't sound like pop music. Look at anything indie or punk or modern orchestral and opera. But the masses are alienated by those sounds. Reminds me of the mountain dew commercial where they butchered the queen of the night aria...the most beautiful song and no one can appreciate it.

Also... Katy Perry is fuckin' much hotter than Pachelbel.
This is the best thing anyone has ever said. Ever. Thankyou for brightening my evening.

It's true as well. Ketty Perry is really fucking hot. It's what the mute button's for.

What I hate the most is that somehow Kesha feels she knows how P Diddy feels in the morning. That's just presumptuous.
Lol.

OT: I didn't know what the hell this thread was about at first. Then I realized that Katy Perry and Kesha weren't actually the same person. You could say I didn't know that because I don't listen to pop. Or you could say I don't listen to pop because I didn't know that. Equally valid statements.

I fail to see your argument when Tik Tok is played louder and essentially drowns out California Gurls. I do find it hilariously ironic I happen to be listen to California Gurls as I type this and like both singers. Of course there is little music I dislike.

Nonetheless, I could pull metal and achieve the same results you just did. I could do the same with gothic metal/rock and rap as well. The similarities are they for all genres and not exclusive to one. Some are certainly more pronounced and pop does have a tendency to adhere to a specific beat more so than other genres. That does not mean rock, metal, rap or any other is different.

You wish for an example. Youtube the following four gothic metal/rock bands. Delain, Nightwish, Within Temptation and van Canto. Now try and tell me there are not similarities to their songs.

But yeah, maybe pop music has a tendency to be all pretty similar. Even more similar than other genres of music, but if people who enjoy pop don't mind then there is nothing wrong with it. Music is meant to do something for the listener, so long as it does then its completed its goal.
Wow, those guys are amazing.

But you're totally right, it's the listeners choice what they like or not. No use making a big deal about it. Besides, if we didnt have Kesha wouldn't have The Midnight Beast:D

It happens alot. You can even take two Genre's of music that arent even close and they'll steal something from them.
I got a perfect example.

The first five seconds of this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KS3h-2mC23E

Now on this song go to 2:40

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R20f-TPKjzc

It's the same thing. And the second song came out in the 60's or 70's and the first song came out a few years ago.

The music industry is running out of truly talented people who can sing AND write songs, so they just either do 'cover' songs or they make up crappy songs stealing other peoples work.
