I'm one of those.

I make this thread because seemingly, the Escapist is a place where a lot of Europeans hang around, and I was curious of what people may think not only of Mexico, but actually of mexicans in general. I ask this, because as far as I have gone is to the U.S where I've been treated very, very kindly by many and not so kindly by others who somehow think I'm there to axe them and steal their jobs or something(I'm aware there is a problem with immigration right now), or that I'm just dumb.

Also,I know of people in my university who are russian, cuban,Japanese, and one african teacher named Luke Acongo(I'm sorry I don't remember where he was from, all I know is that he taught differential equations).

The russians seemed to have had a pretty funny overall stereotype of us(happy, singing and dancing, or drinking tequila)and one person had trouble with the word "profesór", which in russian is used very specifically while here we use it liberally; the cubans eased into the atmosphere pretty well, being practically neighbors and all(and the food, they came pretty fit, and suddenly went fat); mister Acongo whom I don't know much seems pretty happy dealing with people, but he like the cubans has also grown fat after being fit(there's something in our food, I swear); and one Japanese lady who teaches, well, japanese language courses, literally told my brother that she first came in here believing we spoke "mexican".

So, again, considering lots in here are from the other side of the globe my curiosity got the better of me.

Anything is welcome, and thanks in advance.

EDIT: I just separated this thing. Somehow, I couldn't do it before. Weird.

Hmm... can't say I've ever really thought about it much, I mean, I love the food, you gave us Robert Rodruiguiz, and tequila... That makes you pretty good already. I get most of my information on Mexico from the news, so all I really know is that you have a big problem with drug dealers in some parts. But you seem like a nice bunch generally.

I love your culture's food and liquor. Good looking women too. I like Mexican Rap but most of the time I can't follow the appeal of Mariachi music. As someone who listens to punk bluegrass I understand this is hypocritical, but it all sounds the same to me.

So yeah, thumbs up from an American anyhow.

I've only been to Mexico once(Puerta Vallerta) but it seems like a really nice place. The people for the most part are decent, the landscape is beautiful, I don't view their government too well but then again I haven't found one I'm in love with. So yeah, another American who doesn't think that your country is full of people who will steal away my chances of doing jobs I never had any intention of doing.

I am an American and I have no ill will towards Mexico and think of Mexicans as unique people, and I judge them by there character not as a whole. I will gladly learn Spanish and visit Mexico as soon as the country stabilizes a little more.

American, and I have no problem with Mexicans in general as long as they are here legally - I have a big problem with illegals. I work with a lady of Mexican descent (2nd generation, her mother's an immigrant) and she is a dream, highly intelligent, hard-working and funny. And having done some of those "jobs Americans won't do", such as picking tomatoes and stringing fence, along side of Mexicans I can say that Mexicans are hard-working, hard-playing people in general. My father used to own a small business and when the migrant workers came around each year, there was one huge Mexican man (one of the biggest men I've ever seen, actually) who was their leader. He would tell us who could be trusted for credit and who couldn't, and if he approved someone and they stiffed us, you could be sure a word from him and they'd pay up. We did of course have some that would steal the pennies from a dead man's eyes, like in any group of people, but the vast majority were good, hard-working Christian people as fine as any you'd meet.

As to culture, I love Mexican food (preferably Tex-Mex, I can't take the peppers you guys love), hate Mexican music, and hope to one day visit the pyramids and plazas of Mexico. I don't give a damn about the Egyptian pyramids for some reason, but the Meso-American ruins absolutely fascinate me. And those Mexican girls with the cute little Spanish noses - hottest ever.

One big thing the USA has over Europe - you guys get a lot of Muslim immigrants who think physical labor is demeaning and that Europe should be Islamic. We get Mexicans and Central and South Americans, hard-working Christians who don't give a damn about our religion as long as there is work available AND who don't think dogs are unclean. Yeah USA!

As you figured out most of us Americans are open minded and sane people. Sadly there are others that have a backwoods education where the only time they even here about Mexicans are in history class and when the slanted local news talks about how they're "destroying America" by stealing jobs. Don't worry though. Steer clear of select southern states and you'll be fine. Avoid Alabama like the plague. That goes for everyone, there's something in the water.

I don't really pay much notice to mexico. Not in a bad way, it's just I've never been there and I never hear about it, so I refer you all to the great cultural resource that is Maddox. [http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=walmart]

You can visit here and not worry about much, depending on where you visit, of course. It's like everywhere.

As for the whole country stabilizing, I'm sorry, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon. Fearing sounding incendiary, some things just have to change in here, and our government seems pretty inept to get the job done and lots of people are just not happy. Don't be surprised if by 2010 you all start your tv's and Mexico is in the news. Let's hope not.

Two things spring to mind for me, and they don't have to do with Mexico so much as Mexicans in the U.S. The first is that I find it disgusting that some huge industries, meat-packing is the one I've read the most about recently, would bust unions so they don't have to pay family wage or provide safe working conditions, then with complete deliberation turn around and employ undocumented workers to fill the jobs they've made untenable for Americans with families to support. "They took our jobs!" Bullshit, Hormel took your jobs and gave them to people they could knuckle down. Union drive? Call the INS, that'll fix it.

The other is that the Mexican community is responsible for taking one of the worst neighborhoods in our city and revitalizing it into one of the most thriving business districts we have.

Our office building where I work has an entirely Latino cleaning/facilities staff. They do good work and are very polite about me working way late and getting in their way.

Ok, not trying to be racist, but the Mexicans gets tiring. I see a lot of illegals in Texas. Every day, when I get driven somewhere, I see illegal immigrants, just standing at gas stations, waiting for random people to come get them, and pay them small amounts of money to do random work. Just come to the US legally. Also, if your going to come over here to the US, at least learn English. If I was coming to live in a different country, I would try to learn their language. Yes, I know that their government is corrupt, and they are poor, but revolt already! Do something!

Also, some Mexicans are turning "Gangsta". Which, for the people don't know what that is, it is pretty much having pants at your knees, instead of your hips, REALLY big T shirts, when talking, they have every other word a bad word, and act all bad to the bone.

I have met some nice Mexicans before, but the other illegal immigrants are ruining the reputation.

Yeah, that happens a lot.

I'll be honest with you in England, as far as my young social community goes, we know next to nothing about Mexico. We studied Mexican- American immigration in Geography (with a very, very balanced study) but we know little past the crude stereotypes. I'm pretty sure most of my friends can't locate Mexico on a map but then again if you don't learn about something it's not completely your fault for not knowing about it.
