Thoughts on posting dealing with topic length

As I was looking through the forums today I noticed that I am less likely to post on a topic the greater number of pages it has. So if I see a topic that already has 5-6 pages of posts I probably wont post on it. My reasoning is that whatever I'm going to say has probably already been said. And I don't want to read though all the other posts to check.

Is this just me or do any of you do this as well. And why do you do it?

I was going to make a thread about this. I think that repeat threads are fine because they allow people to post their opinions where they'll actually be read by someone. Nobody wants to post on a thread that already has hundreds of responses. Thank you for creating this thread.

I do this frequently. I usually only post when the thread is relatively new/has few replies.

Yep, I do that all the time. Mostly because, like you said, at 7+ pages what I was going to post most likely has already been said, probably better, and I'm not reading through all the pages to find out. Also, I find I'm quoted more if my reply is on the first page. Seriously. It's like the only reason I post.

That, and also who wants to revive a week-and-a-half old thread just because they want to talk about something similar?

I would think that, even if you ignore forum rules and deem repeat threads better than resurrecting threads (there's a reason people insist you use the search bar), you'd at least consider a month or two to pass before starting a new thread with the same topic.

another important factor i think about. if i have something to say that i think is important or has great merit to a discussion i want to post on the first page so people see it and think about it. if its just what is your favorite food then i don't really care and i will post on page 30 if there are that many.

Well, it depends on the thread. It's not necromancy (IMO) if someone makes a repeat thread of a week-old topic that got three replies and died quickly. However, a repeat thread of "Who's your favorite character in game x?" is unnecessary, to say the least.

True, I guess...though I have to wonder if a thread whose topic only got three replies is actually worth repeating.

Maybe I'm just pissed off having to repeat myself a dozen times since joining these forums on things like "WRPGs vs. JRPGs." It gets annoying, after a while, since those threads really never change. There's always the same amount of reasoned discourse (little) and incredible bullshit (lots) in every single one...

This always irked me about the forums here. You reply to most threads with like 1 to 3 posts before it gets bumped off the list and you nomad yourself elsewhere.

Well yeah frankly there are times when I would like to pop into those discussions but I just don't care enough to read through all the other pages. And theres no way I'll ever pop into a discussion without knowing what's already been said.

the only reason I don't post on long topics is because I assume (with good reason) that someone already said my opinion on the topic so i don't see a point to posting.
