THQ Details PC-Specific Homefront Extras

THQ is giving the PC version of Homefront [http://www.amazon.com/Homefront-Pc/dp/B003Q55Y5C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1296514394&sr=8-3] a lot of unique multiplayer tweaks, including first-person cockpit views, more sim-like controls in helicopters, squad-based VOIP, and yes, dedicated servers.

Homefront Creative Director Dave Votypka promised earlier this month [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107181-Homefront-Devs-Love-Dedicated-Servers] that PC gamers would get some serious love from the game with a range of platform-specific features. "We know what they're looking for - the clan players, the tournament players, and the PC developers," he said. "We have a whole PC game catered to the PC community and we'll be announcing more details pretty soon."

That "pretty soon" has arrived and Votypka wasn't kidding; Homefront multiplayer on the PC will definitely bring a lot of extra goodness to the party. Vehicles in the game will be controllable from both the first and third-person perspective. Helicopters will have three distinct control settings, Rookie, Veteran and Ace, each more difficult than the last but allowing for greater degrees of maneuverability. Joysticks will be fully supported and extra vehicle abilities for co-pilots have been added, like a recon function for the Scout chopper, and a practice mode will also be available so players can get a feel for the stick without getting a stick in the ear.

Beyond the vehicles, the PC edition will have a squad management system with squad-based VOIP, as well as clan support and more detailed post-match statistics. Multiplayer match recording is built it, as is LAN support, and a "dedicated server browser executable" will be released within two weeks of the game's launch. Finally, as a Steamworks [http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=2&ved=0CCcQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.steampowered.com%2Fsteamworks%2F&rct=j&q=steamworks&ei=IT5HTciLIcH-8AbYs4jiAQ&usg=AFQjCNH4Vc0PRmib4BqGO4xfhiYXpYDpXQ&cad=rja] title, Homefront will keep hooliganism to a minimum with Valve's Anti-Cheat software.

On the non-multi side of the coin, the PC interface has been tweaked to make it more mouse-friendly, SLI and Crossfire are both supported and so is Nvidia's 3D Vision. Mod tools won't be available at launch but could be released if there's enough demand for it; a demo, however, is not going to happen. "We'd love to release a public demo, but this would detract efforts from the main game," the studio explained in the Homefront PC FAQ [http://community.homefront-game.com/blog-post/homefront-pc].

Homefront comes out on March 8 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Nice if it's true though a server browser and decent mouse support for pc shouldn't really be an advertised feature. Just like autoaim for controllers and host migration aren't advertised features for the for consoles,
But the rest is sweet especially the flight controls, nobody got those right yet.
Battlefield 2 had the best controls but those were impossible to learn.
Edit: They specifically mentioned those are standart:
"Finally, a few tweaks you?d expect as standard - we optimized the UI to make it more PC / Mouse friendly. We support SLI / Crossfire configurations for extra performance, and we support 3D through NVidia?s 3D Vision if you have the appropriate hardware."

Plus we all know that people who want a demo will just pirate it.

Good to hear, but this game just looks so uninteresting, and the guy criticising the inclusion of the Taliban in MoH has pissed me off.

Dedicated servers an "extra" though? Fuck no - should be standard. I don't see how they're any harder to implement than they were 10+ years ago.

While all this PC love is wonderful and all that, why are we rejoicing about VAC?

Don't get me wrong, I love Valve and their games, but waiting weeks/months to ban someone you know is hacking is just plain stupid. Their reasoning is that said hackers, thinking their particular hack is foolproof, will go and spread the word, getting others to try the hack, leading to more bans than a simple permaban would've accomplished.

That's great and all, but your anti-hack software failed it's most basic responsibility. To keep hackers out of my games.

/Rant over,

I'm going to be keeping a close eye on this game. It just doesn't look that far enough from every other FPS out there to justify a pre-order, but still looks interesting.

While it's awesome to see more PC love, Homefront still looks really uninteresting. Hopefully other developers follow their lead though.

Everywhere I go, I seem to see some kind of excitement for this game, but something about it just makes me skeptical.

Maybe it's that with all the sequels and rebootings of major FPS series, I'm not about to jump into a brand new IP, especially one that doesn't hasn't really wowed me with anything yet.

Or maybe I'm becoming a snob... and I really really hope not

I sure hope that helicopters are easy to get for whatever poor sap hooks up a joystick; using a keyboard and mouse while on the ground with a hulking monstrosity on your desk is going to make for some crazy maneuvering.

More to the point, while all of these things are grand (except the demo part, alas), I'm still not looking forward to it that much.

It's kind of like the Duke Nukem Forever argument, where the game had better be solid innovation gold or it will get killed off because it didn't live up to the *enormous* amount of hype. So far? Not so impressed. We'll see.

Hmm... tempting to get, but I might wait for a sale. I was looking for a good online shooter to play, and so far Breach has been pretty fun... Plus Bulletstorm and new Pokemon games around that time, not to mention school and work...

Why is the first-person vehicle controls PC only...first person driving works best on console anyway. Wheel > Thunbsticks > WASD.

No demo?

Not that I was ever interested, but I never pay before playing a game.

Well, you can either have a button to shoot, or a button to change the camera. Controller limitation is a *****, ain't it?

Anyway, I don't know why is everyone getting excited. This is how people used to make FPS games when PC was the main platform. This game is still not on my list. I'm buying Red Orchestra 2. Now that will be a hardcore PC FPS!

Thank you for taking a page from Arma! The Armory was one of the best features of that game. Man, I could fly around for hours dicking around in an Su-25...

For normal cars yes(though I would still argue that is down to prefernce; I've kicked many a control pad users asses in Grid with my keyboard), for tanks NOOOHOOHOOHOHO! Tanks you a different drive train control scheme that is almost uncannily identical to the WASD setup. Forward is both treads rolling forward, however, left and right control the differential rather than the wheels, so the action of turning the tank is easier to understand and manipulate with A and D rather than tilting a control stick.

It's a sad day when Dedi's and proper mouse support are touted as features instead of just being understood to already be in the game. :(

Get me some DX11 tessellation and I'd be excited. That part of my GPU is a crypt and probably has cobwebs and other such metaphors for underuse covering it.
