Thread Necromancy vs "use the search function"

I've had enough of people yelling "use the search function" and have decided to ask a very simple question.

Would you rather thread necromancy or new threads, ignoring the search function?

Example: What do you think of Half Life 1?

The issue: Do I search and necro the old thread (and get yelled at for it) or do I post annew (and get yelled at for it)

You opinion?

I have yet to experience either situation. I have necro'd many times, but have never been yelled at. So I'd say Necromancy is the way to go. Especially since it involves controlling the undead.

Well, I think that's a non-issue. If the origional thread was forgotten, then no one will yell at you for making a clone because obviously no one posted on the old one anymore.

Necro the old thread, or, if it is a question like "what do you think of HL1", don't necro anything, just read the old thread. No need to post for that, right? Why should someone get credit for an unoriginal thread that has been done before? Also, why have multiple threads of the same thing? Doesn't make sense.

Oh how very ironic. I guess I will break it to you, this has been done before.
Even sadder: You are actually right.

For me I just leave the necro-nazis alone and act as if someone just hit post on accident. To be honest it adds just a much to anything as a mis-post.

I necro only if the other thread is long forgotten or gone to Duckville, other than that wait about 3 months and necro.

the problem isn't "use the search function". It's more that sometimes if you read three pages back it's aready there. in some cases there have been three or four repeat topics ON THE FRONT PAGE. that's just intolerable. You don't need five hundred haydron collider threads.

the problem isn' thread necromancy either. it's more a case of "say something or shut up". I have seen people ressurect threads to post "LOL". the problem is that if you want to say something, make sure you actually say it, and that it contributes to the thread. also, general rule, if it's older than about 5 months, you're normally safe to start again, as long as it's not a massively popular thread like FAQ You or Purp's picture thread

Doki has it. This is the real reason that people are yelled at for necromancy. If anyone can remember, there was a person not to long ago who was perma-banned for mancing old threads just to up his post count. No-one liked it because it pushed all of the new topics off the front page and people had to go searching for the threads they were interested in.

Cluttering the place with multiple "I hate halo" threads or "Christians/Atheists Unite" threads is so much worse than adding to a topic that is dead.

Give me an original topic then, right now.

No, I am not joking at all. Give me something for an orgiginal topic.

Apologies to everyone else for having to call this guy out, but this is a topic that immensley bothers me, specifically because of people like this.

Topic: Does anybody actually like the fire places installed in most counsel houses?
Surely they must have a better alternative, they are inefficient, ugly and often dont work terribly well.
There we go, an original topic =]

Ummm.... "What are your favorite pants?"

Actually, I think we did have a thread like that a while back. Anyways, What are you pissed at? The trying to post an original topic, or the "end of"?

While I still stand by that comment, I would like to add one caveat. If you are adding something to an old thread, make sure it's something worth reading. People who post 'lol' on six month old youtube link threads do not end up in my good books.

Here's a thought. If you don't have and original thought, don't start a thread.

On the topic of necromancy, the internet tends to be a fickle bunch, we've all posted our thoughts on whether the LHC will destroy the earth and we all know what we think of HL1, so why bother weighing in to the conversation. If a thread is old enough to be considered necro'd then the majority of people are probably just going to look at it and wonder why. Certainly if you have something complex to say then by all means do the magicks, but the majority of the time I see a thread brought back just so someone can say "Me too!" (albeit some of them take a paragraph or two just to agree with everyone else).

Wow i'm surprised how many people are okay with necromancy around here. the other forums I went on went all Torqumada on people who tried to make undead armies. Personally I'm indifferent to either of the options as they create the same result.
