We have all been through this.
You come up with an idea for a thread, you think it is so original and awesome it is sure to get 1000 posts within the day. You spend 5 minutes typing it in, embeding videos and pictures and you post it. You check back 10 minutes later to see how it is doing and BANG no comments and only a couple of veiws. *Sigh*
I started one resently asking for campagin ideas for Left 4 Dead 3, it died so badly it was embarassing.
Anybody else have a story like that?

I remember another thread about this once...

OT: Nah. Although my reviews never get many replies, I don't mind.

The second thread I started was something like "What would happen if Sony and Microsoft settled their differences Deadliest Warrior style?" I should have phrased it "Playstation vs. Xbox" or something because people were getting technical about it. Not to mention the rules for the thread were flawed. (How was I supposed to know Ninja Gaiden was originally released on the NES?)

Then my first thread about making up achievements for games that existed before achievements existed petered out after about 12 comments.

But my 3rd thread was the charm. ("Scenes you were glad happened off-screen.)

I had one exactly like this. I had an idea that, someday, we might make robots so smart that they can think past their programming. I put across the idea that someday they might have their own rights, changing from things to do our work to civilians, just as the slaves from Africa and stuff had to.

All I got was a resounding "No, we just won't program them to" which misses the point but ended the thread right there and then.
Plus, I think everyone thought I was racist because they got the impression all I was doing was comparing robots to black people. I did not come out of that thread well...

I've only made two threads; the first did pretty bad but for the second I got excellent and hot topic.
It's very hard to come up with an original thread here; they have nearly all been done before.

I've made a few threads. I'm generally happy if they get 30 comments or so. Though, I was disappointed that some didn't get further. They include topics like:
To break the forth wall
Extra Credits and the Supreme Court
Is there Anyone Worth Voting For?
Poll: Movies and games in 3D. Opinions

I have a few others that just barely scraped by with a little over 50 comments.

Most of my threads do, except for a couple. One went for quite a bit and got locked because it turned into a massive flamefest.

I did a thing for 4k posts, and it was some long thing about internet forums in general, that died pretty sharpish.

The best way to get people to comment on a thread is to make it highly controversial. Without being inflammatory, of course. You want to make a contentious statement and get people to have at it peaceably without resorting to trolling and flaming between the posters.

One example is if you would say "What's wrong with Polygamy?" or "Why is Abortion a big deal in the States?". That way you get two main camps (pro monogamy / pro life versus liberalist views / pro choice people) debating and getting a real storm going. Even people with no real interest to the topic will chip in and find themselves drawn to one group or another, and then you have the anarchists who say something even more contentious to get the snowball effect going again.

I wouldn't say i've had any threads 'die' on me the way you see one or two do now and then. (I'm looking at you, Bourne movie thread).

"how do YOU dry?" died pretty quick. Most of my threads do.
I remember commenting in that one, seemed to have not much discussion value though so that might have been the problem in that case.

OT: I haven't started any threads yet, but I think that the chances are they would probably die pretty quickly if I don't think the posts through.

Most threads I make die pretty quickly, although I created a Candlejack monster with the thread "In All Seriousness, What The Flying F**k Is The Basement!?" It actually had nothing to do with the Basement. Search bar it if you want.

Wait... Did I say Candlej

It would not be ironic if this topic would happen to fail. I'll let Bender "Bending" Rodriquez define irony:

As for failed topics... One about nationalism in the Politics and Religion sub-forum, when I still read that one.

I think most of my threads only made it to page 2 at the most. I had one that had only 15 replies and less than 200 views. It was about those family moments that are awkward and hilarious all at the same time. But, I don't mind. I made a thread that so far has almost 6000 views and climbing and 200 replies.

Yeah, I made one asking for assistance forming good questions for a WOW trivia thing I was putting together, and got all of like 2 replies, positive ones, but still...

Worse is that I also put it on Warcry, and got less of a response there than here, that's the MMO site!
