I'm pretty sure this should be in the advice forum, so...

Hey, Escapists! I'm a 17 year old girl in high school/gymnasium, second year, and I'm currently studying art.
When I'm done with high school, I'm planning on going to a university on a little island outside my homecountry(Sweden) called Gotland. The education I'm planning on is Gamedesign and graphics, and I'm(if I dare be so bold) rather confident I'll be able to get in, if not I'll study the courses that I need to get there because all I hear is praise for that school and it's also the only education in gamedesign that's focusing on art and not programming in Sweden, from what I know.

I do have one primary concern however; I don't want to live all by myself, and it might be possible(but rather unlikely) someone of my current buddies will be willing to move there with me, either to study on the university as well or just because they want to get away from their families and get a job. But if not, I have no clue on how to find a roomate.

tl;dr: Any tips for how to find a roomate in case I can't convince/drag along one of my currents friends once I'm gonna start university?

P.S The school guarantees a place to live if you get in, which is awesome.

If the school guarantees a place to live then you'll be put with flatmates anyway, by default. That's how I made half my friends at university when I started, they were my new flatmates who I was put into a place with, as only a very few friends of mine from home went to the same university and those that did lived in different parts of the city anyway.

The point is, you're worrying over nothing. You'll have a flatmate anyway because of the university's own policies, or should do anyway, I reckon. It'll all be fine. And if it isn't, well, there are plenty of websites that should give tips or give adverts on other people in similar situations. That's how I started looking for new flatmates earlier this year :p.

No, no, it's not flats or dorms from the information I've recieved, they can put you in a house with a family willing to let you use a room or something, and they only do it if you're not able to find a place to live yourself.

And I'd much prefer to get my own apartment(or well, get an apartment I can share with someone I preferably know).

There is Futuregames Academy in Stockholm, should you want to study somewhere else than Gotland (but still within the country- it may be easier to find someone to share quarters with there). I would know, since my sister graduated there not long ago (although as a 3D modeler). Feel free to ask any questions, and I will try to help to the best of my very limited ability.

To directly adress your issue; unless you actually run into someone (or stalk) who are actually going to the same uni and is in dire need of a roomie, finding one may turn out to be hard. That is my pessimistic prediction. I am sorry that I am just stating the obvious and is of no help whatsoever.

If there's a Craigslist for that section of the world, you could post there, though in smaller areas it tends to not get used.

We have one, although there is next to no activity. And what activity there is orbits the Stockholm area. There should be some domestic sites that do roughly the same thing, though, just that I have not found them.

Well, I don't really know how local newspapers work overseas, but over here we have a section called "classifieds" in them where you can pay a small amount to get a spot in a section that is basically a group of ads. People will sell crap there, or occasionally look for roomates.

Worth a shot, i've never done it myself.

Lol, I'm from undeveloped Yurop wat r newspaepr?

In all seriousness, we have those... My concern is that the area she is going to attend Uni in is rather thinly populated, and she may only have a rather limited number of course mates to live with.

But I dunno.

Sounds like you have quite a different system to that of the UK.

If they put you up in houses there should be a university department or department of the Students Union which organises accommodation for incoming students. Find them and get into contact with them when the time comes, asking what the arrangements are.

As for university applications, just try and persuade your friends to apply to Gotland. I would however point out that the norm is to make friends once your there at uni- you can meet your old high school friends on the holiday. If you have friends who want to go to Gotland, make sure you apply for housing together as a group.
