I found an article, its 10 pages long, but is the most in depth look at piracy i have ever seen.
He takes a very unbiased look at it, and i plead to anyone who still pirates games to go read it.

Pretty sure pirates will still look at it as "I get free stuff so I don't give a damn" regardless of how it's looked at, or what impact it has on others. That's why they're pirates to begin with.

The place I work at is directly effected piracy. There are those that abuse it to no end. But sadly most gamers at one point has gotten a bootleg of a game from a friend, off a site, at a LAN. Its hard to justify those that work hard to create the product and those that sell it all getting ripped off. The problem is that with the economy most people are looking at pirated games as the only way to play a title due to money being so tight. I hate piracy but its just part of the world we live in.

erm ive just bought this film legally so why are you telling me this?

in all seriousness if they charge £8 to watch a film and a further £6 for a snack and beverage and stop you from bringing your own then they are the criminals

Pirates have a natural attitude of "As long as I win, fuck them all".
An article is not going to change it, because they'll just say "Fuck it" and continue the piracy.

If they started pricing right I wouldn't consider piracy. 60$ for medal of honor? 50$ for front mission evo? 40$ for dead rising 2? These games are not worth the price, and I've gotten ripped off way to many times. Oh and for anyone who says "you can wait for the prices to drop" take a look at CoD MW 2. Still 60$ after about 2 years, and it's only half as good as CoD 4. Price them reasonably and sure I'd buy it. The only time I wouldn't pirate ever would be for companies just starting.
They cost too much is no excuse. If you think game companies are asking for too much money, don't buy their games, you can clearly get more use out of the money you've saved.

That's no reason to pirate, is it?

Yes it is, and that is my opinion. Any quality game I have bought for full price. I have over 300 steam games to prove that. That includes 3rd party and growing companies, but those that skimp on their games, those that destroy franchises because they made garbage only to sell at full price don't deserve to be paid. It PAINS me to know there will not be another front mission game because the last one was so horrible, and what's worse I had to pay to see it.

If you can't afford it you don't play it. It's hardly a conundrum.

A good link indeed! It confirmed several suspicions I have had about the subject. However, what is unfortunate is that, yet again, the only viewpoint it takes on is the economic one and that it also conveniently quotes certain numbers while not acknowledging, but simply dismissing the lack of numbers from the side of the pirates themselves, which still seem sorely lacking yet would be vital to learn any more. Also, during the course of this logical text, there are certain moments where his bias does shine through so...sorry, it is not unbiased. Everything *is* biased to some degree. In fact, if anything, articles which rely on logic can be the most biased, because the source material that forms the basis of their logic is all too often not verified or checked. But I will say it is less-so biased than most of anything I've read about the subject thus far.

It is invaluable and worth a read for anyone. Personally it wasn't enough to sway my opinions drastically...but it does give you food for thought. It's just a shame that this logic is ultimately not enough to comprehend it fully, but it is definitely enough to shed light on it, which is more than I can say for well...just about any argument on the topic really.

Still...he does feel the need to state 'the facts' a bit too often. The problem with so many of those facts are the way in which they were obtained and from what sources, something that I VERY RARELY see him question. So...yeah. But regardless, still worth a read.

Well prices are like that partly because of piracy and partly because making games is extremely expensive

As much as we all wish it, the marketing team for Microsoft and Sony don't take personal opinions into account when deciding the prices of games.

I see that the Escapist is now putting people on probation for even mentioning piracy. Even the guys who recommended that you pirate System Shock 2 in another thread were put on probation even though you can't buy it anymore and if you did the money wouldn't go to the devs but straight into EAs pocket to help fuel more unfinished games with shitloads of overpriced DLC.

Heh, yeah, that commercial, by the way, is thoroughly mocked by anyone practicing piracy precisely because of this. So it honestly fell flat on its face in most people's view.

It is only criminal when it is against the law. You don't like the laws, rally or run to change them.

Anyhow, do you even have any idea how the economics of movies or games work? Now, don't get me wrong, I think the gaming industry (looks in EA's direction) does many awful and horrid things and I'm not happy with concession stand prices, either. But lets take a few examples of why they are so desperate and pricey.

Theaters make their money off of the concession stands, period. Ticket prices cover the cost to show you that nice movie and barely that. They also have to charge more to make up for movies that flop. If they didn't, the movies like Gigli would have put most theaters out of business. This is why they charge an arm and a leg for food and why they prohibit you from bringing your own food. Without those sales ticket prices would double. Would that make you happier? Something's got to be expensive, why not make it the optional part?

Games are no different. Lets take some mega blockbuster hit, say FF XIII, for example. Though I hated the tunnel game play, the movies and graphics are amazing. Do you have any idea how much it takes to make a game of that caliber? Do you also realize that most companies don't make money on the first game in the series any more? Why do you think there are so many part 23s out now? Is much cheaper to make a sequel. Did you also realize that with how expensive games are, the millions upon millions they make on one hit probably would not be enough to keep them out of bankruptcy if the next game failed? Yea, take each name you see scroll by in the credits, multiply that by 60, 000 (on the conservative side), multiply that number by the number of years it took to make the game, now you have the salary costs alone to make that game. There is also the upkeep of the building they work in, equipment, actors (voice and motion capture), royalties for using graphical engines, sound engines, video engines, payments to the console maker, royalties to the property owners, ad infinitum. Still think they charge too much for a game or movie? Of course you do.

Piracy isn't a good thing, but, eh, what are you going to do?

Can't beat it, and nobody has ever stopped people breaking the law by writing articles, regardless of how in-depth or unbiased.

Ultimately, people are becoming less willing to pay more for games with less time put into developing them.

Even if you make a perfect game, people will still pirate it however, and even if you may a shitty game, people will still buy it in droves.

Things won't change, no point throwing money or time at trying to stop it.

Piracy is a boon for the games industry.

1 kids don't have any money anyway
2 get the kids hooked on gaming with pirated games
3 maybe as working, adult gamers they'll become more responsible too
4 profit

When I was a kid, me and my friends and every gamer at school was a pirate. It's not like we could then spend even a tiny fraction of what I spend now on gaming.
