Infinitely creepier than the Slender man.

The 'Princessification' of little girls is definitely one of my soap box issues. If I say anything more, I'm going to fly into a rant.

There is an episode of that old satirical UK show called Brass eye. (Guy who did Four Lions among others) Where they show parents backstage at a beauty pagent where the parents are showing off breast implants they got their 4 year old child. Everyone thinks it's adorable. That unfortunately, would not surprise me all if I saw it on the news.

The main problems here are sexualising children. They use the adult model for attraction which is revealing outfits, make up white teeth etc. Which forces you to judge the kid on a horribly inappropriate system of "beauty" Not to mention the fact it's even more messed up bringing up a child to think that the only thing it has to offer in life is how attractive it is and how it has to obey orders and follow the herd and ratify that stereotypical view some woman have for themselves that looks are everything.

it's fucked...

I watched about 10 minutes of one episode and then turned off the TV, went up to my mom, and said "Thank god your not a moron" she had no idea what I was talking about too.

I think it's sick... It's harmful for the child's psychological development in a scale much worse then most videogames. I also think it's border line pedophilia propaganda and a sick and twisted way of undermining any form of social and cultural values.

It's not just "kids having fun"... I think we all know how competitive and aggressive those pageants are so it's more of a way for frustrated mothers to relive past success (as shallow as they were) or frustrated mothers to experience what those success might've been.

This also introduces kids (specially little girls) to a world of shallowness and consumerism that is quickly turning this world into an awful place... I love how they usually brag about good wholesome christian values, though...

Sorry for this small rant but I think those pageants symbolize most of what's wrong in this society... A bit like Jersey Shore for kids...

But what do I know? I'm European so I might have a twisted view of that subject...

PS: I'm not being pseudo-PC mind you... I love tits and booze and "violent" video games just as much as anyone else... But I'm an adult who chose that for myself... I don't like that being pushed into kids killing their potential of thinking critically and rationally...

EDIT: Only now have I read the other comments so I feel I need to add something... I'm not hating on the USA. I do realize that I mentioned Jersey Shore and everything but it's not like I think "fuck the usa... they don't have any moral values! USA sucks...". In my humble opinion the USA is a great country that is unfortunate enough to have created both FOXnews and MTV. Those two channels by themselves give more media coverage to sad examples of people then probably all of the worlds media put together... Of course you (Americans) have your screw ups like these child pageants but here in Portugal we have bullfighting and I'm nor particularly proud of that either... Every country has its screw ups... So I'm not hatin' on anyone...

I guarantee that each one of those judges has child pornography on their computer.
Reminds me of that southpark episode where Michael Jackson is in the body of Ike and they put on a pageant so Michael can move on to the afterlife. . . .
And yes, I suspect they do have.

Pageants at a young age are a bit... overdone isn't it? It's more for the parents their ego then helpfull for the child. I, as a child back then, would have preferred to play outside then to be inside wearing a dress and Tiara. . . Then again I am a man so that might be a bit different for me.

America simply has a sick obsession with child entertainers, whether it's The Little Rascals, Macaulay Culkin, Haley Joel Osmont, or Hitgirl from Kickass.

Toddlers In Tiaras is just another facet of this.

Its okay if they just put them in little dresses and let them say "You're beautiful!" but some parents take it too far. Not to mention, how do they define beauty? Because that falls within the perviews of your conundrums of Philosophy. Teaching the only way to be seen as beautiful is too wear a crapload of make-up and stuff like that will only hurt them long term when they get older.

My mother watches the series, for some reason that I can't fathom. Then again she watches other reality tv bullshit, so I guess there's my answer right there. Personally I want to punch all of them about as much as I want to punch the two morons from 'What Not to Wear'. (Who gave those two little shits the right to THROW AWAY people's clothes just because THEY think it doesn't look good? But that's an entirely different rant.)

Ultimately....I suppose this kinda crap, while unnecessary and sometimes wrong/downright creepy, well...I suppose it helps maintain the status quo of the world. What would life be like without those wonderful snobbish, fashion-obsessed, makeup-company-stock-buying, drama queen, bitches that a few populate every high-school and thus make up part of the classic experience for everyone.

Still....America wants to put emphasis on learning, math, science, etc. for it's younger generations. A good step might be to outlaw shit like this. Or at least take the program off the air. Spreading the concept will only cause the weak-willed to try and engage in the activity.

and as for the boys' side? They already have something like this. It's called Youth Football. A boss of mine as well as some other parents I know have kids who are about 8 years old and they're playing. Hell, youth-sports in general. Only difference is everyone knows the trope about the angry, half-drunk dad at the baseball game, yelling at his son for every microscopic mistake the poor kid makes and introducing everyone under the age of 16 to various new and inappropriate words. I don't think it occurred to many of us that it was possible for Moms to be the same way with their daughters.

Still....basically want to punch anyone who does this crap. Or at least unleash the Miller High Life dude on these people.

I think it's crazy how insane objectification of children gets the go ahead and perfectly accepted.

But you can't even get the boob sliders in a single MMORPG to go below a C cup because "that's child porn!".

I feel like I should wipe my internet history and burn my laptop after watching that...

This stuff is just... it's not healthy. Both for the kids who are being pressured into this, tarted up in ways that children just shouldn't be and essentially being taught, whether intentionally or not, from a young age that you have to be the prettiest to win in life. And the "pageant mums" as they're called are obviously just living through their kids and it is both scary and severely disturbing.

I hate that show, it's rather disgusting. They exploit and spoil their children that way, and I just can't imagine what can't of people they'll grow up to be. Most shows on TLC make me feel that same repulsive feeling that Toddlers in Tiara's gives. All it is is the most materialistic people complaining about not having more money than they already have because they want to get something better than what's already pretty good.

Besides that, the mothers put their innocent children in competition against other children to see who's prettier. There's a winner and many losers; they do it again and again afterward. They dress them up and show their daughters off on TV. The moms are likely living what they didn't get to through their unknowing children.

Don't get me started on Kate Plus 8. That's just... these shows are creepy, exploitative, and simply wrong in my opinion.

Why can't these moms simply put a dress on their children at home and tell them how beautiful they are, instead of showing them off on TV, and letting the world see how they throw tantrum after tantrum to get what they want. It's sad. This is one of the same reasons that I hate that teen modeling, and even modeling in general. It gives people a reason to think that they're not attractive, or good enough, or even the slightest bit pretty.

Nothing like telling women at a young age that if your not pretty enough to win a pageant then no one's going to ever love you. Plus there's shit like This [http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/09/07/ptc-slams-toddlers-tiaras-for-pretty-woman-costume/]

Just another example of mothers trying to live through their daughters. "She loves doing this, it's her choice." Yeah, no shit, because that's the only time you ever give two shits about her.

I've got no problem with people 18+ doing this because at least then they're making the choice, but people this young is just stupid. Course the same goes for 10000% of the other reality T.V. shows.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go pitch an idea to some reality network about following the KKK as they goes about beating up minorities and shouting White Power. I'll be rich.

After having watched that video, all I can say is this. I feel nauseous, someone get a bucket...

OT: If I could have children, I would ban even the mere mention of this kind of filth from being mentioned anywhere even remotely near them.

Ugghh, that is so wrong, they don't even look like children after all that make-up. Why can't their parents let kids be kids, they'll have time enough when they grow up if they want to take part in contests.

<spoiler=Snip>Im not going to go to youtube to see, but Im going to assume the OP is talking about Child Beauty Pageants. bout which Im... eh. It singles out the bitches in life, and is a good way to see what moms you dont want your child to be around. And besides, its no worse the the adult beauty pageants. the only thing bad about this is its "children" so everything seems more evil about it.

...

Personally, It hink it instills a winning ethic to a girl to be honest. If they had the boys equivilant of cage matches, I'm sure my uncle would have put me in one, and im sure he would put his daughter into a beauty pageant because it will teach you to "win, and win decisively."

so yeah. let the parents do it if they want. Tell the dads to get off their lazy asses and do something if its so bothering, cause tehy;re just as much at fault here for letting it happen.

...

and if thats not wat the video was about, sorry that I missed the entire point of the thread.
It's a reality show, so there's mothers running around cussing their children out for acting like children "oh, so you wanna dance? THEN DANCE FOR THE FUCKING JUDGES NOT BACKSTAGE!" it's not about a "winning ethic" that's what sports and shit are for, this is 2 year olds being dressed up as cow girls and then getting yelled at for pooping themselves.
Still inspires and ethic through competition. I dont know if youve ever met a grown up child beauty pageant winner, but they are some of the fiercest and most successful people I've met.
