I recent thread post brought me here
http://www.landoverbaptist.net/forumdisplay.php?f=1
For those who are like me and don't feel like clicking on the link, it should bring you to a church forum (and not you're normal neighborhood church, either) with entire threads dedicated to disproving gravity and how the Earth is round, how Skyrim encourages devil worship and how TF2 feature homosexual characters, and bashing just about everyone who doesn't feel the same way they do. Not to mention there's a "Punched the Most Queers" award for members.

As I flipped through threads that seemed like there's no way people could think this way (unless this is some kind of elaborate joke no one told me about), it kept reminding me about how, as a child, I'd try to correct my younger brother when he played games wrong, but my mom would stop me and tell me to let him play it his way.

It's hard to say whether these people are actually hurting other people, but it's clear that they're not big on different people--race and creed.

We can assume this is just some kind of fringe group, but in a way they represent the more sane but still backwards (we're assuming tollerating gays and blacks is considered forward) and intollerant.

This by no means is a thread about "hey look at these guys" and I'd rather not see, "well you just gave them X number more views," because that's not what this about. This is about posing the question, "Who are we to try to correct these people and people like them?"

EDIT:
It's great to know that my example was only joke, but this still doesn't answer the discussion question.

:p Clearly you've never heard of the Westboro Baptist Church. This is a church who's run by a family of lawyers who preach hate speech. They said that 9/11 was god's way of punishing America for having so many homosexuals in the country, that the earthquake in Haiti was also divine wrath, and that god hates all American soldiers.

These people make their living by protesting military funerals and intentionally causing controversy in the hopes that someone will flip out and assault them so they can sue the assaulter into the stone age.

Proof positive that it's all a scam: when Steve Jobs died, one of them tweeted "lol Steve got what he deserved, god hated him for not using his platform to promote god's glory." The funny thing is she tweeted this from an iPhone. When called on this hypocrisy, she wrote another tweet: "lol hater's made cause I use an iPhone to tell the truth about Jobs. God made the iPhone for this very purpose!"

In short, there's a lot of royal assholes in the world...many of them tend to congregate together.

I KNEW I FORGOT SOMETHING!
Nah I know these guys, but they seem to be more a group of trolls, then anything else.
I remember when they got "hacked"

The things the OP is referring to is obviously very disturbing to most people and I don't think we should tolerate this kind of behaviour as a society. Anyone is allowed to believe what he wants, but this freedom stops where it starts to negatively affect other people. Saying 9/11 was an act of God, for instance, is just sickening. How are these groups even still allowed to have this kind of content on their forums?

Tolerance does not mean ignore. You are free to challenge peoples beliefs and your own through debate, it's the most tolerant way to exchange ideas.

It's great to know that my example was only joke, but this still doesn't answer the discussion question:

Should we try to correct people like this?
And who are we to try to correct them?

No we shouldn't. tolerance is a two way street, you have to tolerate them regardless of their own intolerance. Sure it sucks but the minute you persecute them for their beliefs you are far worse then them. The punched the most queers thing though, they should be prosecuted for punching homosexuals out of spite, but not for spiting homosexuals.

Course it's a joke but the discussion value still stands.

Yes we should.

Tolerance isn't about putting up with stuff no matter what, it's about not persecuting people merely for being different.

Stuff like that goes far beyond being different into being threatening.

Yeah, tolerate people like that. But the second they step out of line and do something illegal, you put the fear of their God in them.
