Rule #1 listen in lessons, you might be bored or uninterested, but if you hear what people are trying to teach you, you'll have some background knowledge when you need to. Also, be active, pursue hobbies and stuff. I got my current job because during school I worked on CDs that were then given to graduates.

Here's a warning, if you complain about how hard high school is, and your parents and teachers try and tell you to stop whining because college will be a whole lot harder, don't believe them. That is a lie.

College was three times, and on some occasions, 5 times less difficult than high school.

So my advice is to do the best you can, because if you can get through high school, you can get through anything(at least anything dealing with further schooling and work).
Be prepared to have 8 hours of homework crammed into many individual nights.
Here is how easy college was compared to high school, at least from my experience:

High school:

A literature class: Read this 25 page play in two days(understand everything that is going on), and also in those two days, write a 5 page paper single spaced over the whole play properly discussing every key point and sub-point.

For a math class: Right notes down from the lesson as fast as you can while the teacher is talking and showing them and erasing them as he/she goes along, if you miss some of it, figure it out on your own.
Oh and you will have 40 problems to do for tomorrow, and 40 more for the next day.
Also, you will have to remember the special formulas because you will not be given them on the test if you forget.
Now here is what college was like for me:

A literature class:

The professor says: We will take two weeks(4 class days) to discuss this 25 page play. Over that time we will discuss as a class what our viewpoints are and what we think is going on. Though I will correct you and if you get to far of track and by the end I will tell you everything you need to know about this play.

Also, here is a writing prompt for these two pages of the play. From what I have told you in class, determine what the key point of these two pages is and how it effects what came before and came after. The paper you will be writing has to be a minimum of 3 pages double spaced. Oh and you have a whole week to get it done, if you have any problems understanding what is going on in those pages, and I will try and clear things up.

-----
Now if my laziness and procrastination was out of control, which it always was, I could always count on at least a two day extension on turning the paper in.

A math class I took:

The professor: Here are the notes that we will be discussing in class, you can look at them while I discuss them. Most everything you need to know is on those pages.
Oh and for the next class day(two days from now) do these 15 problems, for starters near the end of the class time I will help you do a couple of them.
And for the test in two weeks, don't worry about having to remember the formulas, you can bring a page of notes that has the formulas written on them.

---------------

So remember, survive high school, and the easy street of college is your reward.

I hated using my locker in high school. I bought a briefcase and usually kept all my books in it. When I had to wear a coat I brought a bag with me to put my coat in. From what I remember about high school everyone seemed to make a big deal about stuff. I mainly ignored everyone and just worked on homework or read a book when I had a chance.

My advice is to ignore all the drama that goes on in high school and just concentrate on getting good grades.

High school was really hard for me ... but I guess if you're smart you won't be in International Baccalaureate like I was, so in that case it should be pretty easy.

Just attend all your classes and do all the work and make sure you turn it all in on time. Even if it's not all done perfectly that should keep you above a 3.5.

Oh, and make sure you have friends and go to parties and all that shit. It's hell otherwise. It's hell anyway but it's much less hell if you have some fun.
I took the IB. I didn't get the diploma due to me being terrible at essays, but nonetheless I got an unconditional acceptance into university :D Now I start university in 19 days, hopefully it will be easy. I'm inclined to believe so because I was the only one to know what Pyongyang was when a professor asked what the capital of North Korea was -.-

OT: I can't quite remember my first days at high school. What I remember is my first two years were more or less terrible, but my last two years were great. Just hang with a crowd that you identify with and things should be fine. Just don't be too hard on yourself and party. Seriously, that was what I did wrong during my first two years. It didn't really affect my grades either way due to me being a bad student anyways.
University is really easy compared to IB, or it is for me at least. I've done two semesters of university, and I blew through them both, I think like 3.8ish gpa (in IB I ended up with maybe a 1.9 or a 2.1, something like that, I don't really remember anymore). But in IB I was bogged down with multiple essays and about eight giant assignments at any given time, and now I get maybe four essays all semester and maybe two or three other assignments per week. I'm really getting a lot of downtime, and it's great. The big problem is, the university I chose has no idea what IB even is, so it makes no difference that I was even in that program in the first place ... I didn't get the full diploma, but I got a couple certificates and I still can't get any credit for those -.-
luckily my university does, so I get to skip Spanish and math :D

So yeah, I'm going to high school, it's 10:05 PM where I live and I should probably be asleep. So anyway, I'm not sure what to expect, everybody is telling me to grow up and mature some, but I'm not sure if I want to. My sister says to keep a 3.5 to 4.0 GPA, IDK if I'm sure I can do that. Now for the discussion value. Was it hard for you in high school? Did you get along socially/academically? Are you glad about your high school experience? If you could tell the 14 (or however old you were when starting high school) something what would it be? Don't be a smart ass and say that it would tear the fabric of time. Also, shark week is over, how do you feel about that?

Captcha: ruture frombs.

According to Urban Dictionary, frombes is another word for anal intercourse. Oh captcha you kinky little girl.

Edit: I agree, DON'T stand in the middle of the hallways, in the school middle school where I went to it's easy to it's easy to get caught behind somebody and go fuck all nowhere. This rule is applied 10 fold in a 4 foot hallway.

Edit: We don't have lockers. I know it's weird, I don't see anybody complaining about it though. So just putting that out there. But this thread isn't just for me, if you have advice on lockers by all means post it.
advice: take it one day at a time, but try and work your weeks out ahead of time, set aside time to do homework (generally close to after school, if you can't finish it in class like i did) so you never have to worry really.

homework + projects being done good and on time = 3.5-4.0 GPA in high school, without breaking a sweat.

and it is school, filled with lots of fun people, try to have some fun, eh? Don't turn it into something awful, try to make each day worth something, whether that's just a relax day to take off the stress or a day to get to know someone you've been wanting to for a while.

first few weeks, be nice, smile alot, and i bet you'll make some great friends/classmates, and from their its smooth sailing.

High school eh? It's actually not that bad.
Agreed

Try to finish your work on time even for the required classes well actually especially for the required classes they may be boring and tough(and useless sometimes or all the time depending on what you want to do in life) and you should do fine.

High school isn't like how the mass media portrays it(what a surprise) so don't worry its not as bad as they say it is but then again I was in a medium sized town. The students I had at this one Career and technical education academy in our biggest city in the state were not as good or as nice as my fellow students at my town but they were mainly just rude and not bullies at least I hope they weren't.

And of course it's not that bad and you'll survive it all and then you get to the good stuff after you finnish it. (don't believe people when they say High School will be the best years of your life because your young and have a lot to live for and their will be better years that will easily trump high school)

School for me was always miserable and high school was even more so. I didn't lack for friends and my grades were fine, but I hate schedules. Doing the same thing everyday for a year was torturous for me.

It's really not hard to survive high school. Just keep your head down, put yourself out there once in a while, try something new. Don't go looking for trouble because it'll definitely find you.

I never cared for it.
Then again I never had any friends until halfway through senior year, so that probably had something to do with it.

You were born in 1996...?? Damn I feel old...

1996 was one of my favorite years.

High school blows. Just don't take ANY drama too seriously.. none of it matters once you're out.

NONE OF IT...

American High School is a joke academically. I'm German and I was the best of my class in English and I had to help my guest sister with maths although I didn't actually have any math classes. -.-

But look out for those assholes. High school usually has lots of those.

Here's the thing. Fuck everyone and be yourself. I can't stress how important this is. If your friends can't handle that, they shouldn't be your friends and if anyone has a problem with you they're not worth your time. Be yourself and awesome people will gravitate to you.

It should be easy, High School is pretty much just like Middle School, if a bit bigger.

The main difference you will notice is societical and amoungst the teens. The enxt is the buckling down for fucking tests and College admission.

High school was amazing for me. My number one piece of advice to you is to try everything and regret nothing. Freshman year I did chorus, softball and creative writing. I found my niche in the latter and now I want to make a journalism career out of it.

Also, don't go into high school with a set plan for your future. That was the biggest mistake I made. Even though I did insanely well on my SATs, I ended up getting sick and missing most of my senior year. Now I have to sit out a semester before going to college. Don't overdo it. Overachievers rarely ever finish first.

As far as shark week is concerned:

Of course, play drinking games with soda if you're not legally allowed to drink.

oh dear god a brother in suffering... Junior year will kick you ass (it did mine...). Junior with an IB curriculum will make you want to eat babies if it makes the suffering stop.

In all seriousness, IB can be hard as hell. You a graduate? I'm sadly slinking by with a 3 GPA after French class held down my 3.5 and beat it do death with my improper sentence structure. tell me senior year is easier...
Heh. Sorry dude. After Junior year I dropped all my IB classes (except I stayed with a certificate in Math but my university didn't end up taking it anyway). I couldn't do it, I worked my ass of and ended up with a 2.1 gpa I think. Junior year was the definition of hell. I heard from others that Senior is much easier, if that makes you feel any better ...
