No you are not I used to work at a comic shop. The players that were actually fun to watch were between 25 and 55 because they
A) Didn't argue about the rules so heatedly
2) Used strategy as opposed to 'i use all my points on the biggest guns.'
C) Didn't ragequit
You obviously didn't work at the same comic shop as me.
Well, nothing is absolute.
There was a memorable instance where a guy in his mid 40's rage quit while playing WH Fantasy he slapped the table and broke some of our meticulously crafted terrain that we so generously let people use to play at the other player who was like 15. (It was a cathedral) I walked up took his picture. He said ?Thor man what?re you doing this fucker refused to play by the rules! You know I play by the rules? I asked him to leave and he put his shit together he still refused to leave. So I, being about 10 inches taller and 10 pounds heavier (he was an oinky one) then picked him up and throw him out in the street grabbed his tacklebox of miniatures (I?m pretty sure it was the Green Elves) I hucked the tacklebox at his feet closed the door and locked it. He stayed outside screaming and threatening us till the police came.

So Yeah there are cases.

So, I'm 31.

When I was a kid, I played some Warhammer/40k but never really get too into it because the strategy involved was over my head. So, I settled with Magic:TG.

When you get older, your mental maturity changes, and I find myself playing a lot more strategy type games, which got me thinking about Warhammer/40k again.

So... am I too old to play? I think if I could find some people more my age that played I would enjoy it, however, the thought of spending a Saturday afternoon with a bunch of early teen kids playing a tabletop game doesn't really appeal to me.
BTW-Love your username: one of my favorite holidays.

You're definitely not too old to play, and I'm sure the other 30 somethings I play 40K with would concur.

Unfortunately you're looking to start at one of the worst times in Games Workshop history. The 5th edition rules were released last year and they are really horrible. Without getting into too much detail, for the past couple of years, they've decided to stop trying to make an interesting and compelling tabletop game and have decided that they would rather just figure out ways to make us buy more miniatures and books.

By the same token, White Dwarf (their magazine) has become less of a monthly guide to the hobby and how far it can go and more of a catalog made to sell their wares: you never see conversions or play by play battle reports anymore; you definitely don't see battle reports with heavily converted armies anymore: it's all the bland studio by-numbers jobs you see on the boxes.

Really the only thing that's improved in the new rules is the ork codex. Chaos unfortunately has been altered from the most interesting and customizable army to put together to the most boring and lame armies: yes the Chaos Marines and Demons are two different armies now. Whoever came up with that pants idea, should be publicly executed by septic dunking. And that's coming from a guy who usually had to fight chaos: they used to be a challenge, now they're lame.

I recommend you get together with some fans of the fourth or third edition rules and play with them the way my friends and I do. In fact, you're welcome to join us if you're ever in the NYC area.

Unfortunately I'm a skinny little teenager so that would have ended rather differently for me, although it would depend on whether my football/lacrosse buddies were there at the time I suppose. We did have the cops come once...nothing as dramatic though. My friend walked in and someone yelled "It's Lloyd! Call the cops!" and one kid dialed 911 but didn't call, not realizing that dialing it still goes through.

You have no idea how hard it is to look like you actually want to be hanging out there and not that you're being held hostage.

You can ragequit Tabletops? Since when?!?!
I can imagine the following:
"AH! STUPID DICE! THAT'S MY 3rd critical failure in a row! I've had it" *storms off to adjoining room and cries*

You can't age out of warhammer. For example our players' forum has members from 15 to 49. Though i would say the best opposition would be someone mentally past the 19 mark.

I don't know how kids can afford to play warhammer/40k... you need to be an old fart to be able to afford a force worth putting on the table.

kidding about the old fart comment, but if you want to play, more power to you.

Tin/plastic figures can indeed get quite expensive but there's plenty of alternatives. One of the best resources is the Wargame Vault [http://www.wargamevault.com], a new partner of RPGNow and DriveThruComics. And of course there's always the D&D Mini's, Heroscape and many of the newer systems released.

I'm 37.

I played Warhammer 40k up until last year, and Pirates of the Spanish Main until March of this one. I'm having a baby this year so I won't have enough time to play tabletop games for awhile.

So no, you can never be too old. We have a guy who plays both boardgames and tabletop strategy games who is over 50.

EDIT: Also, alternatives for tabletop miniatures - Battlegrounds.

http://www.yourmovegames.com/battleground_index.html

Excellent, cheap game and imitates miniature tabletop action quite well.

You're never too old to play. Because of the games relative difficulty I think the game can be played by almost anyone of any age (assuming they can get their head aroung the constant rule revisions - hell, I still play to the... what edition are they on now? It's something like two before the current version). Anyway I'm only 20 and I shudder at the thought of standing around a table with a bunch of 12 year old who've had too much sugar so I can imagine you'd be even more apprehensious about playing it than I am/would be.

This.

You're never too old for tabletops unless we're talking kiddie tabletops.
Really though, you're never too old for Play-doh. Candyland? Maybe.

Only people who are over the age of 20 and have full time high pay jobs can afford to play warhammer games :p

It's truly heartwarming to read the responses to this thread. I and some lifelong friends (all approaching or just the wrong side of 40), were brought together by D&D and videogames, and are still as passionate about our gaming as we ever were. If anything, it keeps us all sane in the face of the travailes of family and work. So all I can say is, game on!

I think the older you are the better/easier/more fun it is to play them.

When i went to my first WH40K tournement (a doubles), my friend and i were the only under 18s in 100 people.

I'm 33, and I and about 7 other people around the same age as me just had a lovely time playing 40K with each other in a GW Battle Bunker not too long ago. And I've certainly met many other 40K and other miniature games players my age and older (including people well into their 40s and 50s).

The only problem I find with specifically with Games Workshops games and age is that while there are players of all ages, GW staff are trained to pay attention to kids (to hook them while they're young) and thus if you're an adult looking for advice or support you're often screwed (though it can depend on the store you go into). If you're feeling too old to play Warhammer, you might just have been on the receiving end of some of their bad marketing. (The irony being that their current business model is so awful that the only reason IMHO they've continued to sell anything at all is because of older gamers who have started to play and didn't want to stop and lose their investment in the models, and thus got younger people hooked as they went along.)

Most games I play--tabletop RPG, complex board games etc.--I have no problem with finding fellow players my age. You might just try heading down to your FLGS and advertising that you're looking for players over 25.

It's like any hobby, you're too old when you don't enjoy it anymore.

If you're still having fun with it why shouldn't you? There's plenty of other grown up 40k players kicking about, look for them and leave the teens to themselves.
