Who do you think are the top 10 guitarists ever. You don't have to like them, but from an unbiased standpoint, who do you think is the best?

Mine are:

Hendrix
Dimebag Darrel
Sinister Gates (I hate Avenged Sevenfold, but I can still admit it)
Slash
Buckethead
Dan Donegan
Daron Malakain
Kirk Hammet
Alice Cooper
Ted Nuget

I don't feel like putting together a formal list so I'll just list a bunch. I'll put the band they're in for the more obscure ones.

Jimi Hendrix
Paul Gilbert (Solo/Mr. Big)
Joe Satriani
Dave Gilmour
Slash
Buck Dharma (Blue Öyster Cult)
Jerry Cantrell
Angus Young
Joe Perry
Glenn Tipton & K.K. Downing (Judas Priest)
Jimmy Page
Dave Mustaine
Kirk Hammet
C.C. DeVille (Poison)
Ritchie Blackmore
Keith Richards
Alex Lifeson (Rush)
Ry Cooder (Solo)
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Eddie Van Halen
Pete Townshend

Not really a "top 10" persay, but it'll do.

I like how you say "from an unbiased standpoint" and then proceed to post a bunch of rock/metal guitar players.

Angus Young. Might not be the most technical guitarist, but he is one of the better showman.

Slash, Jimi, Randy Rhodes, Dimebag Darrel, Frank Zappa, Joe Satriani, Brian Setzer, Zakk Wylde, Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler.
The list goes on and on, but these are just the first ten that came to mind.

I really love Rock and Metal.
And there are some very, very good guitar players in these genres, but the absolutely best guitarists are found in classical music, jazz and blues.
If you read interviews with guys like Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, Tom Morello or Eric Clapton they all say the same: That they themselves are good, but not as good as the elite of the "traditional" guitarists.

My personal Top10(chosen rather for uniqe style of playing than highest technical quality, altough given at all of them) guitarists are:

Ritchie Blackmore
Tommi Iommi
Buckethead
Dave Mustaine
Tomoyasu Hotei
Lazy
Jeff Beck
Tom Morello
Jimi Hendrix
Slash

I don't have a top-ten list, but I really think George Harrison deserves a mention.

This quote serves two purposes. To agree wholeheartedly, and to also say it's spelled Gilmour :)

Unelss there also happens to be a dude named David Gilmore who happens to be a killer guitarist. Then, I retract the second half of my original statement. Google wasn't showing me the light, but I did check. I swear!

Edit--(Awesome pre-post quoting action here)

Can't name 10, but definitely David Gilmour is my favourite - I have yet to hear a solo as emotionally stirring as the one in "Time".
I'll see your "Time" and raise you a "Dogs," particularly the solo riffs in the first 5 minutes or so. But ah hell, they're all good. Guy's a killer soloist, period.
The only guitar work of his I can't enjoy is "The Narrow Way, Part 2."

*Edit: Ignore me, I didn't clue in that you meant the jazz guy, I was thinking Pink Floyd. Sorry :) Great pick, by the way.
