I'm gonna cheat and technically include 5 games.

1. Portal Series
2. Mass Effect Series
3. Fallout: New Vegas (this one wins, the other 2 closely follow).

1) Dark Souls. I love me some dark souls. The atmosphere, the combat, the hidden cryptic story, the large weapon choice, the challenging difficulty. To me it comes into a perfect climax of dark awesome.

2) Dragons dogma. Great open world ARPG. A new IP that i really hope gets bigger. It has a lot of great new ideas and while it's a bit unpolished, it has lots of potential. Also i had much more fun with it than i did with skyrim.

3) Tales of Vesperia. I personally like the anime style, and i love ARPG's (if you couldn't guess from my first 2 choices). It had a nice story with likable characters and great combat. It was i think my first fully completed game on the xbox360 and the first game i bothered to do a NG+ on, twice. This game also did a really weird thing. Back in the PS2 era JRPGs used anime cutscenes because the inengine ones usually looked pretty bad. This is probably the first game ive seen where the anime cut scenes looked worse (graphically anyway) than the in engine ones.

Apparently i like JARPG's. Keep it coming japan, hey maybe FFXV will be an ARPG too.

1. Entire Mass Effect series for me, but three was the pinnacle of the series

2. Skyrim 'nough said

3. Bioshock. Amazing story, great gameplay, everything a game should be
Yeah, what he said ^

Still play Skyrim almost a year after the release and I still find places I've never seen before (and yes, I do explore alot and got several characters). Dawnguard just made it even more awesome.

Wow. Tough call. I have no choice but to base my selection on the number of hours I've sunk into them. I think that is the best way to determine which game I found most enjoyable.

Skyrim. The vanilla game isn't all that great. With mods: it's perfect.

Uncharted 2. Best of the exceptionally good series.

God of War 3. Artistic gore.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Fallout: New Vegas
Portal 2

Honorable mentions would have to go to Oblivion, Fallout 3, Resistance: Fall of Man and Portal 1.

For me:

1) Lost Odyssey
[small]Oh my god... so much Lost Odyssey[/small]

Some of the deepest characters I've ever seen in a game. The story itself, if you think about it, wasn't that great, but the way it told it and how emotional the game was made it feel so much better. And the characters were the icing on the cake.
Hironobu, I salute you.
[small]Granted, it does take a little while to get good.[/small]

2) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Does it even need to be said?

3) Mass Effect 3... minus the ending.
[small]I haven't played the extended cut yet, though[/small]

I don't think I need to explain this one either. Disregarding the ending for a moment, of course. But of the three it was by far my favourite. Disregarding the ending.

Honourable mention goes to Dark Souls, if only because it's the first game I've played in a very long time that knows how to make a game challenging in s genuinely satisfying way.

1. Persona 4. What? Everyone else is saying it.

2. Team Fortress 2. The perfect team-based shooter

3. Fallout 3. 4 years after release and I'm still finding new things to do.

Hey fellas, has the Portal circle jerk started yet?

Metro 2033, Dark Souls and Halo 3 - in no particular order.

1. Because Persona 4 is technically last gen and because this game improved leaps and bounds over Persona 3 regular,

2. Because Bethesda open worldedness can mesh well with strong writing and characters

3. Because sometimes I don't need strong character growth or a gritty dystopian future as much as a shining star telling me the funnest way to get from A to B

Honorable mentions to Skyrim, Disgaea 4, Monster Hunter Tri, Final Fantasy Tactics A2, SMT Devil Survivor, Castlevania Order of Ecclesia, and Batman Arkham Asylum

Skyrim is not even close. The combat sucks, the story is boring and the characters suck.
Bioshock and Halo 3 come in as contenders.
UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH @ bashing those things about Skyrim while putting FO3 as best game this gen.

I haven't played them all, but

1. Team Fortress 2---As far as I'm concerned, best multiplayer FPS ever. I will never need another one.
2. Fallout: New Vegas---Was my favourite game ever for quite some time. Vastly improved gunplay, and so many well-written side quests with actual characters with real personalities.
3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution---Fantastic gameplay and atmosphere. Fairly meh story, but it tried, and there's so much freedom that it still holds up.

Captcha: I'm sorry. Okay I am, the Bayonetta box art is deeply stupid, but it's an amazing game nonetheless. I'm also sorry to Super Mario Galaxy 2, Demon's Souls, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Portal 2, Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas who couldn't make it.

1. Dark Souls. One of the hardest, most balanced, addictive experiences I've ever had in gaming, not to mention the fact that it's gorgeous and the world really draws me in.

2. Red Dead Redemption. The characters were very human, the story was excellent, and the huge open world was a joy to explore.

3. Civilization V. Simply put, that "just one more turn" quality is executed so well in Civ 5 that I've probably sunk more time into it than any other (non-Pokemon) game this generation.

Looking over my top 3, I can't help but think "Oh god, I'm such a casual." T_T

1. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
2. Team Fortress 2
3. Minecraft

Honorable mentions go to Halo 3, Dragon Age: Origins, and Quake Live. Though as someone else in this thread already mentioned, the generation isn't finished yet. I'm hoping Guild Wars 2 will find a spot in my top 3 by the end of this gen.

Uhhh, what?

I don't like either games, but I'm not sure how you can say those things about Skyrim but have FO3 as #1.
