Splinter Cell was the game that made me a true "gamer", I still love that feaking game! The night vision, the climbing on ceilings, damn, I wish my old Xbox was still working.
I know all the splinter cell games are backwards compatible on the 360...
Well had a modded Xbox, all my games were on a harddrive. Once the Xbox broke, I lost all of the games I used to play.

Not stealth-BASED but still fun:

Timesplitters (2 or 3, I think... the one before Future Perfect). Shutting the hell up while having to "snipe" people and cameras with a silenced pistol is fun as mess. (Like, the first mission, too!)

The Thief series is pretty much the definitive stealth game for me. Oblivion has okay stealth, but it gets a lot better with the right mods installed.

Also, I know it's not really a stealth game, but the original Far Cry. Yes, every battle usually results in a shootout, but before that, you scope the place out with your binoculars, tagging the enemies on your radar. Sneak througfh the jungle through some grass to the perfect sniping position, and pick em off. Or maybe crawl through some tall grass towards the base, and pick em off with your silenced mp5.

Tenchu, despite how crappy it's gone lately.

Despite loving Tenchu Z, there are just so many flaws with it.
Why bother loving it when it's as broken as the soul of a crack whore? The only thing it got right was having ninjas in it.
Because, they could have done so much good.

Even more so if they had had the Wrath Of Heaven team work on it, and some effects from the second game.

You ought to say you love the idea then, rather than the game. I tried to like the game, but the more I think about it, the more infuriated I get. The crap produced by From Software now makes me wonder if they even have the capacity to make it totally work.

....you may be right.

So much good, yet they made such a flawed attempt.

In Deus Ex you can play stealthy like hiding in a dark corner waiting for a guard to pass a then shooting them in the back of the head with silenced weapon.

As a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid I have to say, Metal Gear Solid, especially 3. Splinter Cell 1-3 are also very good.

The hitman series. If you played that game the way it was intended only one the target would die in each level without anyone else knowing you were even there. That is ultimate stealth.

As the kind of person who would rather ghost in and out of my neighbors property and take something valuable to get back at them for their insults of my lawn gnomes dressed as popular video game figures, rather then smash up their holiday ornamentation or something I am into stealth games.

I started out playing Thief, and loving every minute of it. There were then a lot of not so great spin offs. My most recent treasure (I say recent but its been around for a while) stealth/assassination game favorite is Assassins Creed.

With the news of Assassins Creed II coming out my interest in leaving my enemy with a lot less valuables and perhaps a slit jugular with no one the wiser has been rekindled.

So, what are your all time favorite stealth games?

Edit: Stealth games that I enjoyed:
1. Thief: The Dark Project
2. (I forgot the title of this one) but it takes place in WWII and you (in some of the missions) play as a sniper with throwing knives and garrote wire.
3. Assassins Creed
4. Sly Copper (always fun for those rainy days :D)

is the other game velvet assassin ?? it sounds like it
