In the era of 1001 possible RPGs to choose from, why should I buy this game? Trying to find a new RPG to play.

Loot whoring and monster clobbering, you get it in the purest form, there is really nothing better for it.
And I suggest going to the top difficulty otherwise the reason to strive for better loot isn't really there.

As far as loot games go it's the best one out there, your alternative is diablo 3. Have fun with that.

When you say RPG, be aware this is an ARPG, the story of Torchlight II will not be important in the slightest, you will not get dialogue options and roleplaying will be at an all time minimum. It's a dungeon crawler, but a tremendously good one.

I find it better than Diablo 3, but you could also check out the newly released free to play Path of Exile, which all you can buy in that game with real money is pets and things to make your skills different colours (a few other things but nothing that gives you even a slight advantage).
I prefer Torchlight 2 though.

More importantly, there's a demo, play it. Don't let a bunch of internet strangers who don't know your tastes decide if you should buy it or not.

Please don't try to make this into a "what defines an RPG thread," as that is single-handedly the most annoying, utterly irrelevant debate you can possibly have regarding gaming in general.

As for Torchlight 2, it's a great game and can't recommend it enough. You could always play Diablo 3 or Path of Exile, but neither of them really get it down as well as Torchlight 2. Diablo 3 has a horrible loot system and little to no character customization, although it does have a great combat system due to its use of PhysX. Path of Exile is good, but it's very grey/brown, and there's minor aspects of it that just dissapoint (the map, the lack of unique active skills for each class, no pet that's able to sell your goods, you character doesn't feel like they're getting stronger, etc).

Couldn't care less about what defines an RPG, and never said Torchlight wasn't an RPG. I do however care about someone who is used to more traditional RPGs looking for a similar experience and getting something different. Just giving the dude a heads up. I think spending monies on a game you thought was something else would be more annoying than what forum dwellers post in your thread, so the good outweighs the bad.

It just doesn't everything an ARPG should do and does it well. There's not some revolutionary mechanic or deep, intriguing storyline. Just fun gameplay with classes that allow a good bit of flexibility.

Also: If you played the first one and didn't like it (I got bored with the first Torchlight), you could very well still love Torchlight 2. I'm in that camp. Don't know if that applies to you or not, but it does to me.

Or you could play Torchlight 2 AND Path of Exile (AND Titan Quest, while we're at it). Not trying to knock you or anything. I just see a lot of people act like you can only like one game in this genre (I don't think you were doing that, by the way).

If you are after a deep and engaging story I wouldn't recomend it.

If you are after fun challenging gameplay and a well designed world full of large array of monsters to kill and loot then I will ask you why haven't you bought Torchlight 2 (or at very least downloaded the demo) yet.

It's cheap, it's good and you can play it with friends.
I noticed Sacred 2 is back on steam also after a year-long hiatus, I gotta give that a try aswell!
