Total War: Empire, Multiplayer Campaigns at last.

I don't think this has been done, and people are acting surprised when I tell them, so I'm putting it down here that Multiplayer campaigns are at last coming to the Total War franchise in its latest addition, Empires. According to Creative Assembly Studio Communications Manager Kieran Brigden, the game will ship with 1v1 multiplayer campaign, keeping the numbers down to prevent the game from being too slow, as battles will be playable on the battle map, though more players may be patched in at a later date.

They've been doing a lot to keep it interesting and streamlined; your opponent player can take command of every army or fleet you face, regardless of their faction, to keep the fights interesting. Taxes are now set centrally, so no more fiddling with each city, but you can set different social groups to have different tax levels. Armies can now be ordered at a general in the field, and they will be trained at the nearest valid city and will make their way to the general on their own.

Lots of cool stuff is being added too; combat now has cover, garrisonable buildings and controlled fleet combat. There are three government types to choose from, and during rebellions you can either side with your government and crush the rebels or with the rebels and overthrow the government; good if you don't like you current government type. Rebellions in specific areas can trigger the emergence (or re-emergence if you've been a bit Imperial) of nations.

I think, ladies and gents, they're going to do the franchise proud.

If they get it right, it's Game of the Year and possibly Game of the Decade. If they get it wrong, it'll probably be like Medieval II: Good, occasionally very good, but not great. Either way I'm buying.

I think and hope it will be superior to Medieval 2 and even Rome.

This seriously sounds sweet! I can hardly wait! And I thought I was beginning to loose interest in mainstream games... Well, I guess I was wrong. Hideously, hopelessly wrong...

Finally. Though I think they should have had naval combat already in Medieval II.

Question: Will the game have squalor? If there is, have the devs said anything about how much it affects the game? Squalor fucking sucked in Rome.

Wasnt squalor the thing that affected the growth population? If you had to much of it you would have negative growth or something? I havent played Rome in a long time...

It affected happiness too. Later in the game squalor grows so big that cities revolt. There's no way to prevent it. You could have all the buildings, good governors and garrisons of thousands of soldiers but cities would still revolt. Then you'd have to conquer them again and repeat the whole thing all over again.

Then afterwards you'd slaughter the whole city, get a butt load of cash and wouldn't have to worry about it revolting again for some time :D

I see from the re-emerging factions thing that they're bringing back what they used to have in Medieval 1 and if I remember correctly it used to be a massive pain in the ass, because for some reason an upstart young lad who was so far removed from the royal blood line that you wondered how he could possibly claim anything would spawn in the middle of know where with the best troops and equipment of the age somehow, nevermind the fact he should just be some upstart in hiding who'd only manage to convince peasant idiots that he was the true 'ruler' of the lands

I've had a look round and there's no word on this, so I assume yes. They're going for pretty accurate though, so I assume it will be less of a problem. There are currently 6 FAQs the dev team have released:

1- http://blogs.sega.com/totalwar/2007/10/24/empiretotal-war-faq/
2- http://blogs.sega.com/totalwar/2007/11/27/empiretotal-war-faq-2/
3- http://blogs.sega.com/totalwar/2007/12/21/empire-total-war-faq-3/
4- http://blogs.sega.com/totalwar/2008/01/25/empire-total-war-faq-4/
5- http://blogs.sega.com/totalwar/2008/07/14/empire-total-war-faq-5/

Cool i always wanted multiplayer campaigns but it would be dull as hell waiting for each player to end their turn.
Also this has perked my intrest as i thought Empire would be a bit bland in combat since how many different unit types can there be? It's mainly a musket based period of combat now. But it seems they know what they're doing

They got Squalor just right in M2: TW so I can only assume they will keep this formula. m2:TW was a step in the right direction for the franchise and I can only see it getting better.

Especially now that a multiplayer campaign has been FINALLY attempted. This is awesome. They have finally stepped in the right direction, no more hotseats!! Even if the MP is terrible, they have started. You have to start somewhere!

This is my most awaited game this year and built my PC specifically for it.

Hail all Total War VH/VH veterans!!!

Don't be so sure on that front; Empires is being done by the team that did Rome, while M2 was done by a different team.

After having a look on those FAQ's it just made me want the game even more! They make the 18th Century look fun! :p

True, but we arent talking CoD4 and CoD5 here. I think they will base it off similar feedback. They wont reinvent the engine with every game they release (and yes I KNOW they did reinvent the GRAPHICS engine, lol).
